I don't even see why http:// is necessary, or even www. Just go to facepunch.com and it will resolve it perfectly, the web should have this built in as standard (without browsers needing to help it along), special cases like ftp: should have to be defined still, but if http: isn't defined it defaults to it. confusing post with maybe some wrong bits (I think it might be the DNS not the browser), but you get the picture who cares anyway just use bookmarks
This was way before. I'm betting HTTP tells it to use the HTTP protocol and www. tells it to use a internet connection and not a closed-circuit or usenet connection.
Dns servers have become smarter now adays you can probley type YouTube and get redirected to the site. All dns's do is translate web adresses to ip adresses so you computer can connect to it to download the webpage to the ram. All the dns has to do is accoiate the word YouTube with the ip for YouTube and you don't have to type silly non letter characters.
What's worse is that backwards slashes in networking and directory paths.
I remember in grade 5 when everyone thought you needed www., but then I proved them wrong. Needless to say I was the coolest kid in the class from there on in :smug:
And what about having to press shift and a key just to get the ":". Let's just use a ";" or a "." [editline]04:59AM[/editline]
Speaking of slashes, I can't stand it when people confuse a forward slash ( / ), with a backslash ( \ ) and say i'm the wrong one, while i'm politely trying to correct them so they don't look like a jackass the next time they make the same mistake.
I get them mixed up occasionally(I write them starting at the top, so "/" goes back when I write it,) but how often do you need to say them out loud?
And what about having to press shift and a key just to get the ":". Let's just use a ";" or a "."
http.google.com sweet
Nobody actually types out Http:// or www.

[editline]04:59AM[/editline] I get them mixed up occasionally(I write them starting at the top, so "/" goes back when I write it,) but how often do you need to say them out loud?
Well, I used to play WoW and some addons required you to type a command if you wanted to change the addon's settings. For example "/recount" if you wanted to look at the addon named recount. And on vent a lot of people would say backslash instead of just slash. I'd try to correct them but they'd just call me an idiot. Weird story, I know, but that's why it irritates me so much.
I prefer: youtube It's the clearererist because my browser just auto directs me to it.
i prefer: y <3 google chrome, y takes me straight to youtube
I have a natrual gut feeling I get whenever I start typing a url that makes me type www.
I don't give shit because in most browsers you just type second level domain name and top level domain name and it works. Or even bare second level domain works sometimes.
More like Microsoft should be apologizing for using \ in directory names instead of /, seriously. Shift + 7 > Alt gr + +, alt gr just feels stupid and out of place.
More like Microsoft should be apologizing for using \ in directory names instead of /, seriously. Shift + 7 > Alt gr + +, alt gr just feels stupid and out of place.
I don't know what type of keyboard you have, but on a QWERTY keyboard \ has it's own key.
I don't know what type of keyboard you have, but on a QWERTY keyboard \ has it's own key.
They still had to use something stupidly different when others already used / for the same thing before. It probably made them feel special.
Bout fucking time...
Well now with firefox you can just type: Youtube and it works
Who actually still has to type this, though? I thought everyone, including myself, just typed things like www.youtube.com www.facepunch.com www.google.com etc. Fills it in for you. Or yeah as someone already pointed out, just youtube.com and it goes there.
You can do this on any web browser.
But... but what if we're using Internet Explorer 2?
I don't use http:// or www., I just type facepunch.com and firefox automatically types http and www for me.
One day, around a year ago, I opened a website that had a link to every site on the internet. I don't type it in, I scroll down to F, navigate to Facepunch, and click.
Link please? [editline]12:44AM[/editline] On Internet Explorer you can press Ctrl+Enter instead of just enter and it adds www. to the front and .com to the back of whatever you type in.
I hate that he apologised for it, just because the facebook generation of internet users are too thick and lazy to understand how the internet works.
I don't know what type of keyboard you have, but on a QWERTY keyboard \ has it's own key.
Let's play some Phoenix Wright here: Please show me this mysterious \ key on the following QWERTY-keyboard:
But the http: bit is necessary, just not the //, if you read the article. Anyway, on firefox you can just type youtube.com and it works, I do it all the time.
in chrome you can just type youtube and CTRL+ Enter and it adds the rest for you, or just type youtube, or just type You, omnibar is my new love.
he invented the internet. He can do what he wants.

I usually just open a new tab, and click on youtube from the 'speed dial' page. Or I might click it on bookmarks if I have one for it. Orrr I might type "y" + "enter".
@docter; opera? :D

You can type steam://connect/ip_here to connect to a gameserver because Steam registers the steam:// protocol with browsers when it's installed.
at least he apologized
