Catholic rule, and extremist catholic rule are two different things.

Any extremist catholic regime of comparable size and nature to the Nazi party would have been capable of exactly the same atrocities. The only thing that would have been different is that the Nazi's were political, rather than religious, and for the most part acted with the intentions for the advancement of the human population (eugenics) and the advancement of science. I'd rather live in this terrible regime that was attempting to advance society practically, than the live under the same terrible regime based around religion that was trying to advance society spiritually.
