Well, in their defense, you never know if something digital gets stolen, because it doesn't really get stolen, it gets copied. Perhaps they didn't know to which extent the hacker(s) intruded and were simply hoping for the best, which is still retarded, but understandable for a company who doesn't want to tell their customers some unknown jackass might have their credit card information.
Check log, see unauthorised download of ALL PERSONAL DATA, think hmm, what might that be? 7 Days later, They stole all your personal data, you might have to worry now, but we couldn't do anything about it, we didn't know yet untill today. :frogbon:
Okay that's one person. Lets compare to the 50 people I know that used OtherOS for hacks.
Well, you've a point, but removing it did affect millions of people whom were legitimately using it.
Well, you've a point, but removing it did affect millions of people whom were legitimately using it.
'millions' I have yet to see these millions, all I've seen with people using the OtherOS function is hack scripts. I love the homebrew community, but I never saw one for the Playstation. They all seemed to focus on the Wii consoles and such.
is sony liable to be sued out the arse for this?
is sony liable to be sued out the arse for this?
Yeah, especially in countries like England with Data Protection plans.
I really hope I used my unserious password for my PSN account.
It's times like this where I am actually glad not to own a console... Other times, like when it was made clear that Red Dead Redemption will not appear on the PC, I'm not glad I don't own a console. In future: don't enter any CC, Bank accounts or other personal information other than your e-mail address when using a console. (Use those prepaid cards they have for consoles)
Have you guys seen the news about Microsoft accidentally unbanning every single Xbox 360? Might make a thread on it if not.
understandable for a company who doesn't want to tell their customers some unknown jackass might have their credit card information.
Well from the companies point of view maybe, but wouldn't it be better to tell the customers this as soon as possible, so they can block their Cards before the hackers can make use of them??
Somehow I feel that this might not have happened had Sony not been bitchy to those who modded their PS3's for personal use. Though I could be wrong.
I don't think you are at all. Still, dick move of who ever did this. Their fucking up the community, the "low people" in this, not Sony in the way I see it.
I don't think you are at all. Still, dick move of who ever did this. Their fucking up the community, the "low people" in this, not Sony in the way I see it.
Yeah, it's a shame. Also http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:SNE
They say they didn't know until Monday night, and then posted it Tuesday afternoon.
Yeah, I'm just saying there's goona be a shit storm either way, so you might as well do the right thing and tell the victims as soon as possible, so you have just a little bit of sympathy from people, for really telling as soon as possible
Yeah, I'm just saying there's goona be a shit storm either way, so you might as well do the right thing and tell the victims as soon as possible, so you have just a little bit of sympathy from people, for really telling as soon as possible
Yeah, I think a 5 dollar PSN wallet compensation will suffice for the millions of dollars likely to be stolen within the next few weeks.
I don't think you are at all. Still, dick move of who ever did this. Their fucking up the community, the "low people" in this, not Sony in the way I see it.
They're fucking both the community and the company the way I see it, but you shouldn't want to fuck up the community too if you're just angry with Sony about the jailbreaking thing. Such things always hit the wrong people.
Do we actually know now how they got in? Last I heard was rumors of either an insane DDoS or an exploit in some CFW?
Do we actually know now how they got in? Last I heard was rumors of either an insane DDoS or an exploit in some CFW?
DDoS wouldn't let you into their system, and the CFW is apparently not guilty, though it could just be them covering their asses.
Okay that's one person. Lets compare to the 50 people I know that used OtherOS for hacks.
They where afraid it would be used for hacks. But nobody ever successfully did it.
They where afraid it would be used for hacks. But nobody ever successfully did it.
Geohot specifically mentioned he was able to get to the HV and exploit it, so it would've been hacked there and then. Speaking of which, I wonder what Geohot thinks of this whole situation.

He originally did it to fight for consumer rights, and now consumers are getting fucked over something he started (maybe not because of what he started, but likely so).
I bet he's pretty upset. He originally did it to fight for consumer rights, and now consumers are getting fucked over something he started (maybe not because of what he started, but likely so).
In what way did he started it? There are many, many, people in the world that are interested in 42million credit cart details.
In what way did he started it? There are many, many, people in the world that are interested in 42million credit cart details.
He started it by finding an exploit and then spreading it to anyone who wanted to know about it. Just a guess anyway.
Pfft... Yeah, Splitscreen is so awesome
Must be hard not having friends.
He started it by finding an exploit and then spreading it to anyone who wanted to know about it. Just a guess anyway.
Where did he spreaded this exploit that allows you to steal user credit cart info ? Do you have proof what so ever that he has anything to do with it ?
I was saying "What he started" as in the whole... "Sony, taking away our rights to the items we own is wrong and you won't get away with it" idea.
I was saying "What he started" as in the whole... "Sony, taking away our rights to the items we own is wrong and you won't get away with it" idea.
Thats just silly, Do you think this has anything to do with it? They did it for the millions of money, not to screw over sony.
Where did he spreaded this exploit that allows you to steal user credit cart info ? Do you have proof what so ever that he has anything to do with it ?
Seems you don't know how to read. He's not saying he's directly to blame, but because he hacked the system, he opened up the door for those with malicious intentions.
Other times, like when it was made clear that Red Dead Redemption will not appear on the PC, I'm not glad I don't own a console.
R* aren't done with RDR, a pc port could happen. It won't be for a while, but I don't think they'd pass up the opportunity to get double the sales from a lot of people who, like me also own a console.
Why they didn't encrypt user information is beyond me. Dumbest mistake in history.

If that should change, we will let you know.'"
