I feel sorry for Sony but still they kinda had it coming when they declared war against hackers.
Why they didn't encrypt user information is beyond me. Dumbest mistake in history.
That is still unknown. [editline]27th April 2011[/editline]
I feel sorry for Sony but still they kinda had it coming when they declared war against hackers.
Declared war? They were just being a normal company with normal policies that became a target for doing such.
Once all the law suits come out this could be the end of sony
Hey idiots, people who steal consumer information and resell it on the black market are not the same people who hack consumer electronics in their spare time.
'millions' I have yet to see these millions, all I've seen with people using the OtherOS function is hack scripts. I love the homebrew community, but I never saw one for the Playstation. They all seemed to focus on the Wii consoles and such.
With Sony polishing the banhammer, would you waste time developing a time consuming emulator??
Hey idiots, people who steal consumer information and resell it on the black market are not the same people who hack consumer electronics in their spare time.
Hey moron, no shit. Besides, the "hackers who hacked the consumer electronics in their spare time" opened up the door for the people looking to make fast cash.
Hey moron, no shit.
Hey moron, no shit. Besides, the "hackers who hacked the consumer electronics in their spare time" opened up the door for the people looking to make fast cash.
Oh no, someone published a zero-day exploit that led to bad things later. Because that never happens in the computer secur-- Wait. No, that happens all the time. But companies learn to be security-forward, rather than Sony who sat on their asses while they stored everyone's passwords in unsalted MD5s or something. Also, what evidence are you basing that off of? What does breaking into Sony's consumer databases have to do with restoring OtherOS at all?

What more evidence do you need? Sure some of these hackers were working to restore OtherOS but you forget they also shared their findings with others with more malicious intents.

You seem to have misread my post as accepting that the hardware zero-day led to this break-in. I don't, and unless you can show me evidence otherwise, I will continue not to. Good luck finding a way to link those two things.
all i have to say, "Dumb fuckers"
Hey moron, no shit. Besides, the "hackers who hacked the consumer electronics in their spare time" opened up the door for the people looking to make fast cash.
The door wasn't locked, only stuck.

And from what I've been reading that's how they found their way in. Don't quote me on that though. [editline]27th April 2011[/editline]
The door wasn't locked, only stuck.
Wasn't stuck either, all that needed to be done was to turn the handle.
Fuck Sake i can't remember which card i signed up to PSN with and i don't want to cancel them all :(
Except for you know, hacking the PS3 lead to CFW which in turn lead to a CFW that essentially turns a consumer PS3 into a dev console? Plus there's no reason at all for a dev console to even come close to the consumer data, that should be as close to air-gapped as you can get from anything relating to the console side of things.
Man, things look BAD for Sony. But i'm still glad that something like this hasn't really happened to Steam yet. As a wise man once said, "Better you than me, buddy". But still, it sucks for millions of players (and their parents) to have lost all their important info to hackers. It's hackers like these that give the rest of the hackers (the ones that aren't as "malevolant" and klepto) a bad name.
I'd like a source on that info. You would think so, it seems Sony had crappy security set in place.
Search for info on Rebug in google. You would think so, it seems Sony had crappy security set in place.
Yeah that gives me a custom firmware for the PS3. You know what I'm talking about and now you're just being a fucking moron. Either show me some sort of causal link between the two or shut the fuck up.
Yeah that gives me a custom firmware for the PS3. You know what I'm talking about and now you're just being a fucking moron. Either show me some sort of causal link between the two or shut the fuck up.
Are you stupid by any chance?
Are you stupid by any chance?
No, you're the one who's completely ignoring my request for you to provide even a single fucking shred of evidence for your claim that a custom firmware lead to the break-in of a consumer information database. Should I be concerned about my Gmail account because Cyanogenmod exists? What about if I had a motoblur account because people are breaking the bootloaders?

Finding someone who took the steps to document their journey into the PSN's dev network and take screenshots all the way through between the time Rebug released and the 20th isn't a rational belief. [editline]27th April 2011[/editline] And here is the original speculation for the Rebug theory. http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/gx6o4/im_a_moderator_over_at_psxscenecom_the_real/ (Took me 5 seconds to google it instead of posting about how someone is an uneducated fuck who can't find a link, cool right?)

Not exactly first-line evidence. [editline]27th April 2011[/editline]
Here's what I posted: It's what I've been reading, I'm not stating what I say is fact. These are just rumours.
You didn't read my post whatsoever.
So pretty much your argument is the fact that no one would bother to document a break in or vulnerability? Years and years of computer security history would put that theory to bed rather quickly.
I don't mind, sony can go fuck a duck really.
KEYWORDS Theory Speculation At this point nothing is factual as Sony hasn't provided shit for information. Sony would've blocked it a long time ago. I'm not an expert on the topic, nor a representative at either party, but I would say that it played out the way it did because of the lack of knowledge in relevance to its existence.
