The southwest US has alot of webcams looking to the sky, ya know for weatherballoons and swamp gasses
That pilot is a horrible pilot, First of all, When there's a problem on board, The first thing to do is make sure your flying at level and not into anything, He should of dropped down, Gain airspeed and gone around the mountain as he tried to restart the engines.
That video is not clear, obviously, but it does look like he was flying straight and level.
So this tells me there were no mechanical problems. I'd guess he made a mistake in keeping track of his surroundings. I'll bet he didn't even realize he was heading into a cliff. It was dark and he might have assumed either he had enough altitude to fly over the peaks or he thought he was well clear of the area where the peaks were.

It's pretty likely that he wasn't aware of the terrain in his flight path. Which makes him a terrible pilot because he was flying under IFR (or should have been if he couldn't see the mountain), but not for the reasons you mentioned.

What makes this a bit dodgy is that cruising altitude the plane is about 4 thousand feet higher than the highest point of the mountains.
