I'm glad the US military and government have finally come to the right conclusion. Nearly every NATO country allows homosexuals and other non-straight people to serve openly, and have had absolutely no problems with such a policy.

If I was a gay soldier in the military and my comrades were, say, making a bunch of gay jokes, I might want to bring up the fact that I was gay and say that the jokes offended me.
