Leave it to BDA to send someone on a guilt trip for praising something that is obviously badass.
wtf
So Rick and Morty was wrong, a spoon has killed somebody somewhere
I guess you gotta do what you got to do when it comes to survival, but this seems like a pretty grim thing to celebrate or glorify. It will probably haunt him for the rest of his life.
Exactly what I was going to post. I figured this thread would have loads of "what a badass" comments, but I can't imagine what sort of emotional trauma something like this would leave you with.
It's not worthy of praise because he killed someone, it's worthy of praise because he survived a fight to the death due to quick thinking.
If it was the other guy who survived the fight we wouldn't be praising him though, would we?
Ye, my ability to empathize with people having gone through traumatic experiences is a real buzzkill.
Ignorant empathy is a pretty big buzzkill especially when you use it as a means to patronize others and put yourself on a moral pedestal.
Exactly what I was going to post. I figured this thread would have loads of "what a badass" comments, but I can't imagine what sort of emotional trauma something like this would leave you with.
Why do you assume this guy was emotionally traumatized? Not everyone who goes to combat comes back as some broken husk of a human being, does it happen? Yes, but does it happen to EVERYONE? No. There's no indication to say that this guy is emotionally traumatized by fucking some dude up with a spoon.
If it was the other guy who survived the fight we wouldn't be praising him though, would we?
That's a pretty big if, because if the story is true then the guy was trying to blow everyone up.

emotional trauma =/= PTSD
I'm pretty fucking sure killing someone up close with a spoon by stabbing them repeatedly in the neck is going to leave you with some issues. it's not the sort of thing you'll be celebrating later on and laughing about. it's fucking brutal
shooting someone is one thing, but killing them in hand to hand is way more taxing. you're literally inches away from a man as he dies because of you
how would you feel if you had an article written about you by people who don't know you for everyone to see praising how "BADASS" you are when you had to do something so messed up that it probably haunts you
it can be extremely trivial to just call it badass. one of the things id call it is a terrible thing for a human being to have to do to another but that's just me
like if you've never been in his situation would you say that to his face?
I've heard numerous military personnel recount times they killed someone in Iraq and considered themselves badass without anyone else in the room needing to say it. There is no need to defend someones honor or integrity, especially someone who is anonymous.
Exactly what I was going to post. I figured this thread would have loads of "what a badass" comments, but I can't imagine what sort of emotional trauma something like this would leave you with.
Yeah, you can't imagine the trauma, it could be anywhere from complete trauma to no trauma at all. It depends on the individual. You don't have to be some psycopath to come out of a situation like this with a recovered conscience, especially someone who has trained and has been desensitized
Ignorant empathy is a pretty big buzzkill especially when you use it as a means to patronize others and put yourself on a moral pedestal.
What are you doing?
I'm not patronizing or guilt tripping anybody, I'm just saying that this is a fucked up situation that would deeply traumatize most people.
It's like some of you guys are deliberately misinterpreting what we are even referring to as badass.
If you honestly think we are saying the fact that he murdered a person and could have ptsd is badass you're mistaken and should probably get out more.

you're not praising him for brutally killing another human being though
basically the same thing as guilt tripping tbh

I think people realize that Mr. Elephant-in-the-room.
And, really "but this seems like a grim thing to celebrate or glorify," you just had to throw that in there, gotta educate these inferior compassionless brutes.

It's really pathetic that empathy turns you so sour.

I mean, assuming this story is true it's not like I can fault him for killing the dude. It's war. War sucks. You have to do what you have to do to survive. I just think the glorification of violence is pretty unfortunate. I've done a lot of work with veteran's service organizations, even helped run one that my dad started for about a year. I've met a lot of these "badasses," and they come out the other side of the experiences as shells of who they used to be, suffering daily from crippling emotional stress disorders, some so badly they can barely function in everyday life.
Yeah, not everybody who kills in war is going to get PTSD, but it's incredibly common. There's a reason why the suicide rate is so high among military forces. It's a peeve of mine to see people celebrating this kind of tragic necessity. I don't find this to be an inspiring story, it doesn't get me pumped up. Just makes me sad for the shit that soldiers have to go through.

Reel it in, dude. Quit trying to stir shit up or you're gonna end up back in the RC. You know you're skating a thin line here, so stop with the rude, shitposty attitude and just talk about this like a normal person. You just got off a ban for pulling this same act a few days ago. Wise up.
It's really pathetic that empathy turns you so sour.
No, I admire empathy, I just hate patronization.
what makes you think anyone is patronizing you

Of course, you don't agree with me so now I'm rude and shitposty, when your initial post reeks of rudeness and passive agressiveness. Anyway, I'm done here, seeing as you're so frustrated you're using the mod card, it's obvious the discussion isn't going to go anywhere. We're all horrible people and should be ashamed for referring to this possibly true story as badass, blame action culture!

Definitely. I wasn't trying to suggest with my previous post that most or even a large portion of troops who have seen combat come back without suffering from PTSD or emotional distress, just that there are combat veterans who recount their stories as personal triumphs. It's only something I've seen very recently. Before that I just assumed that killing another human being automatically destroyed you emotionally because that's what most of my experience was.

Don't be a doofus and defend yourself against being called rude and shitposty by being rude and shitposting, what's wrong you.

He isn't being patronizing, he said the same thing you did just in his own words, just cutting out the portion where this event should be glorified, unless you think you're being patronizing yourself which would be hilariously ironic, this dilemma you have is so pointlessly silly.
Basically, don't be a hothead and calm down with your make-believe argument.

oh, he's gone, welp
I love it when people get warned not to do X, do X anyway, get banned for doing X, and then wonder why they were banned for doing Y.
Right lets move on.
This been confirmed anywhere else yet?
Let's stay on topic here. Not the place to discuss bans.

Considering how the only relevant links that show up when you Google the title are that awful article and this thread, the story is highly suspect.

It just has that whiff of a 'Sun' military article that they love to throw out every so often doesn't it, just without it being the sun, i'm expecting it to be in sundays paper though :v: .
