because when people hear "assault rifle" they're imagining automatic rifles like M4s and the way they're portrayed in television media and a semi-automatic AR-15 looks just like that and therefore must be the same thing nevermind that a semi-automatic AR-15 is functionally no different than something like a mini-14 which nobody seems to consider a deadly assault rifle assault rifle/weapon is a propaganda term, end of story -- call me when someone commits the fourth crime with an automatic weapon in the united states in almost a hundred years
I feel like that's entirely speculatory, I dont really see a way that you could definitively discern the impact word usage has on public perception, especially when it comes to such a complex issue like the gun control debate. We both probably have our own personal biases that come from our own experiences that inflect upon how we THINK that the use of the term "assault rifle" affects that perception, but I dont think either of us knows for sure. Personally I think that you're overthinking it but I really dont want to make this yet another gun debate thread so I'll leave it at that
Is this really the thread for this? Do you actually think people give a shit? What do you think is really going to upset people: This guy having a misrepresented gun or a dude with a gun buying into the most insane conspiracies I've ever heard and harassing a random restauraunt.
i'm not allowed to complain about a blatant slant in the article?
i'm not allowed to complain about a blatant slant in the article?
The police were the ones that say it's an assault rifle though! The article literally has no gun control bias other than repeating what a police spokesperson said
i'm not allowed to complain about a blatant slant in the article?
I'm saying given the content of the article you're picking out the most inconsequential shit ever.
I don't think the people looking into Pizzagate, like any group, all believe such things. That's not an accurate representation of the situation. If anyone is interested in a representation of Pizzagate from the people themselves refer to this info graphic. https://i.sli.mg/eoWIeB.jpg
I still cant believe people found innocent emails asking about what kind of pizza someone else wanted, and turned it into some crazy satanic shit with all these 'code words' [t]http://i.imgur.com/7Xy7Php.jpg[/t] honestly how can someone look at this and think that they're sane
We really need to crack down on self-radicalization in the alt-right. Young white men believing in these conspiracies are around as much a threat as the young muslim men getting recruited online by Isis. That seems like an exaggeration, but a conspiracy theory that is barely a month old led to a guy with a gun entering a pizzeria. That's insane and dangerous. I don't care what kind of gun it was.
my favorite aspect of pizzagate is the theory that the founder of reddit is a cannibal [t]http://i.imgur.com/oRAMnfa.jpg[/t]
What the fuck is there a cannibalism subreddit???
[del]What is Pizzagate?[/del] I see.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9vwJXx7DR-3zSub4mwQNFg/videos An entire youtube channel dedicated to the scandal. Enjoy.
We really need to crack down on self-radicalization in the alt-right.
This didn't happen until DNC emails were hacked. It doesn't help the alt right is whipped up due to their obsession with ending corruption and countering the radicalization on the left. So I guess the left going need to learn how to do basic computer security, calm down and undo the identity politics and reform themselves and get rid of the corporatism. What one side does affect the other.
Are you really bringing the left into this?
The left is responsible for everything bad, don't you know?
Taking the worst of the fringe elements of online left and you get talk of safe spaces and triggers and stuff. The alt-right indirectly got at least one person to go to the pizzeria where my friend works to shoot it up. Things are not really that equivalent.

The contents of the conspiracy theory as well as the prominent users/posts on the Pizzagate forum before it was shut down by Reddit seemed to suggest a base of users that was overwhelmingly pro-Trump. There was no explicit self-reference to the alt-right, but the fact this entire thing started because a pizzeria had a link to Podesta does not lead to many other conclusions. [editline]4th December 2016[/editline] It's the same way you can see similarities in users, arguments, methods, and websites in GG and Trump's rabid online base. Nobody ever came out and said "GamerGate is for Trump," but the right-wing reactionary post-truth online campaigns kind of all look the same.

Did you know the alt-right/nazis/whatever other boogeyman term also has other races that can harbor the same danger? We shouldn't be labelling people, you're only furthering the division that both sides are causing. You need to crack down on dangerous individuals, not an entire race in a certain age range.
How is Pizzagate alt-right?
how isn't it? It's getting traction with all the typical alt right groups and mouth pieces it's specifically targeting the DNC and the Clintons it demonizes all the shit the alt right does

Most people speak of young muslim men getting recruited, but we need to be open to the same thing happening within the resurgent far-right. [editline]4th December 2016[/editline] Look at the people involved in most mass shootings, most of them are young men, and are either white conspiracy theorists or mentally unstable, or Muslims radicalized by Isis, directly or indirectly.

Willingly looking for recruitment, and believing in it are totally two different things. The ISIS recruits join a giant terrorist group with footholds, while the other would join a small terrorist cell in the US -- most of which are quite tiny compared to ISIS. Though since domestic terrorism is quite a real threat nowadays, we need to focus on keeping these groups in check. I'm not disagreeing with you there.
Yeah, there are lot's of differences between the two. Besides this one case, I am not aware of any specific alt-right attacks, although that really depends on one's interpretation of recent hate crimes. I'm just saying that it would be prudent to start taking similar anti-recruitment measures in alt-right breeding grounds as efforts against Isis recruitment. Just in case. I applaud Reddit shutting down the Pizzagate subreddit, but more websites have to stamp down on this kind of talk, including 8chan and the like.

How foolish.
How is Pizzagate alt-right?
Are you kidding me? Pizzagate is literally just building on the old far-right conspiracy that the Clinton's run a global pedophile ring. Nobody believes that crap except wingnuts on the far-right.
Gotta control that thought, speech, and congregation! How foolish.
do you apply this same philosophy to ISIS recruitment propaganda?
Gotta control that thought, speech, and congregation! How foolish.
You'd change your tune if a bunch of crazy assholes on the internet were sending you death threats and appearing outside your place of business all because they made up some crazy theory that you were a pedophile with a hidden rape dungeon. And now one of those harassers shows up with a rifle, thank god the Metropolitan Police were on the ball, or a lot of people might be dead today.

A flyer that says "Alluhah Ackbar go stab some americans?"

Its so god damn retarded
Isis has the most sophisticated online presence of any terrorist organization. Stamping down on their rhetoric is not only justified, but it is extremely difficult. If the alt-right actually produces someone willing to follow through with a shooting, rather than just showing up with a gun, the same thing should apply to them too. It's not a difficult concept to follow. It's not a violation of the first amendment but protecting Americans.

Update, shots were fired before an arrest was made. Don't recall seeing that in the original article. http://www.politico.com/armed-man-arrested-near-dc-pizzeria-targeted-by-fake-news
-snip- new info
Update on the original Washington Post article says the man specifically went there to "self-investigate" the pizzeria because of Pizzagate.
I had read the opposite previous to that update, hence the snip.
Or someone referencing the god of child sacrifice in an email to Hillary Clinton...
I don't see any reference to children there, nor anything that points to him being completely serious. You could say that it's creepy out of context, but we don't have any context.
