it isn't like you are missing anything really, you couldn't do much, hell you don't HAVE to update it, but every distro ran like ass on it
sony is doing some really retarded stuff like making people pay for online content, rebooting the Spider Man series, and this. What's next, they gonna put dumb shit on their TV's and other electronics?
They never are doing the pay for online.
LINUX TOASTER
What the fuck man I have that same toaster. Minus all the added computing stuff, obviously.
Here's a letter I wrote to Sony support. Sorry for any grammar errors, i'm pretty tired right now.

Hello there, as you probably already know there has been a lot of hype in the media lately about the system crippling firmware update that sony intends to release on 01/04/2010. Like most people, when I first read about about this I assumed that it was either an april fools joke or some kind of misunderstanding. When I bought my PS3, I did so for two reasons. To play games, and when not playing games to perform other tasks using the OtherOS feature.
As you probably already know, the update that you intend to release will mean that an end user must choose between either: a) playing games online or b) using the 'OtherOS' feature. Naturally, this is a bit of a pickle for everyone seeing as you seemingly want to force a user to choose one or the other for reasons that you simply deem as "security reasons".
Why should I and other users be forced to choose between one or the other? There are only two solutions to this problem which I can see. The first is to revise this intended feature and think of other ways to improve security. If this is an attempt to "punish" users who are trying to hack your console, then it will fail catastrophically. In the long run, these hackers will just find ways to allow them to do both things (play online and use OtherOS), while leaving legitimate, developer supporting users like myself with a crippled console. By doing this, you are actually encouraging users to find more ways to hack your console.
The second solution is to send me and other affected users a free second PS3 so one can be used for playing games online, while the other can be used for OtherOS features (both of which I remind you were features which were advertised when I purchased the console, and nowhere in either the EULA or TOS do I find mention of Sony reserving the right to cripple my Playstation with or without notice). You may send the console to :

Thank you for your time, and I hope that you take this feedback into account before making any hasty decisions.

Sony always fights against its communities for its products.
Remember star wars galaxies?
History tells us it doesn't work well but they continue anyway, maybe its a part of some plan.
It's probably an Aprils Fool joke.
I wish it was :( I turned my PS3 on yesterday just to install linux, and here comes along fat ol 3.21
I really don't see a problem with this at all.
Instead of removing the OS option completely, just add support for windows XP and windows 7.
They can't. Windows only runs on x86 CPUs and the PS3 uses Cell.
Linux, being a real OS supports Cell.
