• Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs'

It does have the potential of destroying many of the worlds' electronics. And do you know what that means, Facepunch? Banks accounts could get zeroed out. Total economic collapse.
The Sun is pure energy. If you took a piece of the Sun the size of a pinhead and placed it on a pin, it could kill somebody miles away. [editline]08:49AM[/editline] That's ridiculous and totally fucking stupid.
"Pure energy"? You've got to be shitting me, l2physics.
Well, let's just hope we get a pretty light show when the flare hits. Sure hope it doesn't effect the Valve servers, though.

Faraday cages for everyone wooooo.
Why are people surprised. The sun is one big ass hunk of nuclear fusion, and we vary in distance to it throughout the year a couple million miles. This shit will happen in the future and has happened plenty of times in the past We can now predict a time frame and prepare in advance so any problems can be fixed fairly quickly I'm sure... Think of a Hurricane and when the power goes out... there are Lines down, poles down, trees on the lines and in the way blocking roads along with other debris, and the power gets restored in a week or two (Unless something like Katrina happens and makes the place uninhabitable) ... A solar storm wouldn't cause mass damage like that, so the power, if it went out en-mass, wouldn't take so long to be brought back up Worst case scenario is Granny won't be able to find the new hair salon on her TomTom
Doesn't make sense, Earth has been around for 4 billion years, at minimum, and all of a sudden now we will all be killed ~bullshit~
>Implying mass extinctions haven't occurred before
Doesn't make sense, Earth has been around for 4 billion years, at minimum, and all of a sudden now we will all be killed ~bullshit~
You can't be serious.
>Implying mass extinctions haven't occurred before
From a meteor, not a solar storm..
Doesn't make sense, Earth has been around for 4 billion years, at minimum, and all of a sudden now we will all be killed ~bullshit~
In case you haven't noticed, life is fragile. Mass Hysteria - Do not want. At least Finland won't be severly effected, our main source of power and technology are polar bears :3:
Will HDDs get fried? I don't want all my porn ruined by the fucking sun.
Will HDDs get fried? I don't want all my porn ruined by the fucking sun.
I doubt it. Power outs dont affect them so I doubt this will be different.
oh no, no gps signal for 0.5 seconds
There is no way we can predict this stuff. We can't even accurately predict if its going to rain in our own cities more than a week or so in advance, what are the odds we can predict sun weather patterns over two years from now?!? Not a chance. There may be a solar flare in 2012, but there is certainly no damn way we'd know about it until it happens. Also even if it does happen it will dissipate before it has any really damaging effects on global infrastructure.
Im going to unplug my computer when it happens so ill be the only person with a computer and browse on facepunch...Forever alone.
Im going to unplug my computer when it happens so ill be the only person with a computer and browse on facepunch...So alone.
So your going to unplug your computer for a whole year? You do realize they have no idea of the exact time of this event.
Violent solar storms can definitely affect the Earth, a one a while back (1989) knocked out the "Hydro-Quebec" power grid for around 9 hours. Of course, it's not going to cause any real damage, the problem is it overloads the power lines and safety systems kick in. That's a fairly normal cause of failure though, the cascading failure that happened in the US/Canada in 2003 was caused by a few trees.
nothing will happen scientist proved that sun can't do shit when it comes to our atmosphere other than provide heat and sunlight.
That isn't entirely correct. Coronal mass ejections have caused blackouts across big cities like New York and Sydney before. The bigger ones are like EMPs.
Nothing is going to happen, you can say that to anyone, because it calms them and if your wrong, nobody will be alive to laugh at you for being wrong.
I hope everybody except me dies
Well it was fun guys, but I'm getting off here. Have a happy Holocaust! :suicide:
Fuck off you little dipshit. The world isn't going to end. DEAL WITH IT.
I really really doubt anything will happen.
Nothing will happen. Quote me on this when nothing happens.
Oh fuck not more 2012 shit, I wish they didn't make that movie, now everyone thinks its real :\
the sun will eventually destroy the earth.
Yes, when it goes supernova.
Yes, when it goes supernova.
Hurrr, no, the sun isn't even close to nova mass, let alone super nova. It's going to expand into a huge Red Giant and engulf mercury and venus, right on up to earth, then (iirc) shrink down to a white dwarf or other end stage star
I hope everybody except me dies
I hope every single MALE except me dies.
I wish something cool would happen.. but nothing will.
