After spanking of teen girls, Texas school board gives official OK
They shouldn't be approving any. Also I think it's fairly obvious I'm talking about the Bureaucracy in Texas, not Texans in general
tell that to the other 18 states allowing this shit
Forgive me if this sounds extreme, but are minors not people? Do they somehow not deserve the rights that make the acting of hitting them bad? Why should hitting them without recourse of any kind be acceptable simply because the person doing it is over 18, or a teacher?
Because it's believed that hitting them will make them behave, admittedly you're quite limited when it comes to controlling people who don't really understand the concept of right and wrong, but quite frankly I think we've developed better ways of dealing with this than hitting.
I mean I can maybe see a parent with vary little experience with children seeing it as the only option, but teachers are supposed to be trained in dealing with kids so they have no excuse for this lazy punishment style
It's old-fashioned and stupid and probably needs to get banned on a federal level (no that will never happen)

"Texas town unanimously votes to exterminate African American population"
Welp, they did vote for it so I guess it's ok!
I was seldom spanked as a kid, but the threat of it alone was enough of deterrent.
The nation finds this SAUCY

but that's against federal law!

Because assaulting minors (or women) is considered much worse than assaulting a older man.
Thats the way it works, because you know.
Logic.

It's ridiculous.

So we deter cowards and turn anyone with an ounce of guts into a bitter prick. Wonderful plan, A++.
sometimes you have to disobey your parents.
otherwise you end up with reactionary dickheads who maintain bullshit not relevant anymore.
maybe you should go back to school and learn how to read
That doesn't really justify it,neither the school nor the parents should be allowed to physically injure their children.
Those damn southern states need to get with the times.
Yes "those damn Southern states".
When the article talks about one state, with one school system.
I would post my true views on this, and how absolutely hilarious it is that this form of primitive mindless thing happens, and how some people need to get with the times and just generally other insulting things. But I fear I would get the ban hammer. In short.
"Lol, this is still allowed? I thought we evolved from mindless apes that resort to violence millions of years ago"

We're a very violent species, even today. We're much better at overriding our primal impulses than we used to be, but we've by no means outgrown our violent nature. Hell, it's that violent nature combined with our intelligence that has largely contributed to our success as a species.

didn't mean to rate late
I think it's just that hitting things when they do something you don't want them to do is the easiest and quickest way to make them stop in the short term. And people are just generally lazy and less than intelligent, so it's an attractive way to get your child to do what you want
it's a hell of a lot easier than building a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding, that's for damn sure

Which is a shame, really. It would be nice if calm, rational conversation was the cure-all for situations requiring discipline.
When will anyone learn that corporal punishment like this doesn't work. Kids will just find better ways to do things wrong without getting caught.
Spanking works on younger kids, doing it on a teen is just stupid.
School kids shouldn't accept corporal punishment. If they hit you, you ought to hit them back, no matter who they are.

it is. you just have to be good at it. hitting your kids shouldn't ever be an option.

Have you tried having a calm, rational conversation with a two year old who wants to play with an electrical socket?
Being a "Child" (im 16) myself, i actually have to agree with Corporal punishment.
You see so many kids my age playing up, getting what they want, and then only getting shouted at or suspended, which suspension itself is essentially getting off school for being bad. Whereas if they were kept in school and hit, this would more than likely deter them from doing whatever they did.

Go to 5:00.
Oww.
If a teacher ever hit or paddled me my plan was to moan in pleasure.
I haven't got a chance to, at least not yet.
Sounds hot.

I see your point, I found the "bad" kids obnoxious myself in middle school, but I still disagree with it. Not because it's morally wrong, but because of the stupid reasons that I've heard of people getting punished for. One of my friends got suspended for having facial hair, another one for being tardy constantly. Can you imagine if people were hit for it?

Agreed, it should only work for disobeying the written and sensible rules.
Why hit them? So explaining why something is a bad idea failed, and the kid understands the reasoning and still elects to do it anyways, it isn't like you are suddenly out of options. Suspending a kid is crappy and probably enjoyable for many kids and detention wastes everyone's time.
I am a fan of just making them clean the damn school. Clean gum from under desks. Scrub the bathrooms. Clean the floors.
The janitors at pretty much any school are already going to be fairly over worked, so may as well use the vast quantities of unskilled labor available.
The punishment is unlikely to be enjoyable, it hurts nobody, and it ultimately accomplishes something.
