The idea that swearing is indicative of a small vocabulary is stupid.
As you move away from more commonly used words, from "tasty" or "great" to "delectable" you lose impact because the meaning of those words aren't as well defined in the listener's head.
If you want to express just how good some cake is, "fucking amazing" is considerably more effective than "utterly scrumptious". Both because the former is considered bad, and because the latter is considered ridiculous.
words have meaning. if there's no bad language then there's no normal language, there's no formal language, and language ceases to have meaning. bad language isn't a concept that's been invented by the state to censor your ability to express yourself or something, it's just a natural biproduct of language
That's wrong.
The whole idea of bad words isn't a language thing, it's a cultural thing. In japanese culture, there is no such thing as a "bad word". Yes, you can use a word in a bad way and definitely offend someone, but the word alone, the word itself, won't ever be seen as bad. If you say shit over there, they will believe you are literally talking about shit.
Bad words don't have to exist. They just do in western culture because idk. I personally believe the idea of having a word be "bad" just.. because.. to be pretty silly, albeit useful.
why do I have a feeling that if it was a video of a white kid swearing the police wouldn't have used it as an opportunity to talk about "a culture of violence and thuggery"
One of CNN's anchors pointed this out by showing videos of little white kids cursing.
There is a very huge gang culture within the African American community, I dont see why its wrong to address that.
Because this child is not in a gang. The contents of the video have nothing to do with gangs. The whole thing is literally "haha look at those stupid blacks, even the little ones", it's disgusting.

Did you watch the video? The guys telling him what to say specifically talk to him about gang shit.

That was why the fucking video was originally posted

Hell the kid was actually grazed by a bullet within the last year
Whats more traumatic for a child. Some swear words or being taken away from your parents.
a lifetime of parents like that
The parents really shouldn't be encouraging it, especially allowing him to do it right in front of them or other adults and at a really young age. Swearing when your with your buddies is one thing, but to your parents or other authority like them is mostly considered disrespectful, (at least one would assume.).

I really hate it when race is pulled up like this, especially when the news article specifically says "African American" toddler, is saying that really necessary? Why not just say toddler or child?

In case it wasn't obvious I was overusing "fuck" for the sake of him pointing out that word in particular.
it's an amplifier because it's a 'bad' word. how is that not blindingly obvious to you?
if you replace "fucking" with anything that is more socially acceptable it loses its entire meaning... because it's a 'bad' word. you can't amplify if you're ned flanders. i find it kind of baffling that you're trying to explain what an amplifier is to me without understand where it comes from
[editline]10th January 2014[/editline]
note that 'bad' is in inverted commas because nothing is inherently wrong with the words, but the only reason you can use amplifiers in the way that you do is because they are currently viewed as 'bad' - they aren't acceptable in all social situations and this is why they are amplifying
I use "bad words" in my everyday language, even when I'm not using them as amplifiers.
For instance, if I'm having a discussion and I get stuck on a word or a name I need to remember it'll go something like this
"Well shit, it's like that one time when Nintendo did a thing."
"You know that one politician, what's his name... fucking... Mitt Romney?"
In fact, just watch the VSauce video about this, I'm pretty much just retelling that video in my own words anyway.
That fucking was the fucking point you fucking fuck
Swearing adds strength to a sentence if you're trying to be serious (especially if you're tired of someones shit), and it adds casuality to a sentence if you're being casual.
Examples:
"Grow the fuck up" is a serious context when you're tired of someones shit.
"Wow, this cake is fucking delicious" is in a casual context and is even complimenting by making the "swear" an amplifier of the word "delicious".
I don't see why fuck has to beeped out. If it's about meaning the word fuck has pretty much none besides sex. I agree that some profane words have negative meanings like racial slurs but something like "cunt" for example, I dunno. According to media calling names is a okay as long as you don't use profanity.
