Its worth considering that at first they didn't want independence it was protests vs the new government and a demand for federalisation/more local power. It was the government's heavy handed response which pushed people over to the, what had originally been radical, independence side.

Conservative has always had independence and such as a big trait, not wanting to be told what to do especially. So a culture not wanting to be told what to do by someone else? If conservatives knew about it they'd probably be all over it.
