There is a white gang in Chicago called the "Gaylords".
Only white people...
Generally that's for security reasons. Jamming a network that is meant to impersonate or create a hole in the company network is an entirely different thing, which is what deauth systems do. This was jamming legitimate customer owned networks. The law is pretty grey when it comes to physical jamming vs exploiting a protocol weakness legitimately. But I'm sure the FCC isn't going to offer them any benefit of the doubt.
It is illegal to purposefully interfere with radio traffic at all.
I go to a local convention annually that takes place in a Gaylord, and this year we've booked a room in it. My family and I almost exclusively stay at Marriotts and we have never paid for wifi and have had no problem using any wifi device so I'm going to assume this was the locations management abusing the devices they have.
It is illegal to purposefully interfere with radio traffic at all.
I'm aware. I'm just saying that deauth tools have a legitimate use which is why they aren't banned. But Marriot way overstepped their bounds in using them against legitimate networks.

holy shit that name is for real
that's the real crime here, the name or the wifi jamming?
In Florida near Orlando we have a resort called Gaylord Palms.

In Texas we have the Gaylord Texan.
Even major las Vegas hotels have free WiFi, and they love charging fees for everything.
They charge a extra "resort fee" to every room which includes WiFi among some other things. If I remember correctly they did have free WiFi for non-guests, but it was severely limited in speed.
At least that's what happened in my hotel, I assume all other MGM-owned resorts are the same.
I've stayed in some nice hotels, where I have always had to pay for wifi. Free WiFi seems to be just something cheaper hotels do to attract customers.
I go to some really nice hotels every year, and 99% of the time free wifi is nonexistent.
The Opryland is a very classy place. I am surprised they would do this.
[editline]5th October 2014[/editline]
Actually not that surprised after thinking about it. They kind of snubbed our bid to have our brigade ball there this year.
They should just make it part of the price of the hotel room, and make it free, but slowed down for people who haven't.
They should just make it part of the price of the hotel room, and make it free, but slowed down for people who haven't.
that just makes the room more expensive, hotels will find bullshit reasons to do that. There was this one hotel I been to in British Columbia, Canada that had a free option, and two faster speed options if you really needed the faster Internet for stuff like HD video or uploading stuff.
You guys know Gaylord is an actual name, right?
Derived from the Old French surname Gaillard, brought to England by the Normans. Shaped by folk etymology like gay (“joyful”) + lord.
Ok? Doesn't make it any less amusing.

in a forum where everyone is a 14-year-old fedora wearing, gas mask owning kid
not that the business charges are the same, but on the note of expensive hotel wifi, it's a direct result of most people having phones with data plans, hotspot devices, and laptops nowadays. Nobody's paying for hotel cable porn, so they make up for that shift by sapping people's ability to reach porn via other methods with the bonus of squeezing money out of people for their ability to get work done on the go on the side.
by that virtue, their biggest internet charges go to businessmen who genuinely need a connection, so maybe they felt they could extract a similar per-capita charge out of a conference group, though it was directed at the hosts, not the general populace
This shit is why I just stay at Best Westerns or the like. There's no charm but you know what you're going to get.
Definitely this. I mean, it's just a room you fall down in when you're tired; is there really a need for many bells and whistles? A bed, light, bathroom, and a table to set my shit down are really all I need.

and in recent news and reports, hotels are starting to try to charge even more extra shit
and in recent news and reports, hotels are starting to try to charge even more extra shit
it's not really new news, they've always been notorious for jacking up pretty much everything they offer, especially when there's a large convention being held there/nearby. The minifridge thing is an old joke, but it's very real. Major hotels in chicago will offer you tiny plastic boxes with a funsize bag worth of M&Ms for $8. A single egg breakfast with no juice from roomservice was $18

oh god and those sensors that auto charge you if that $10 can of nuts moves a little bit
Large venue hotels are notorious about this especially in conventions to try and squeeze every last penny from their customers, but jamming devices like this? Shit that's just low.
Also very illegal, if a person were to do this they'd be in federal jail for a while, as its a federal offence
I stayed in a cheapass motel if Serbia and even there they had freee WiFi lol
