I don't think adults would snap this much because of that, but of course there is a reason to snap when someone hits your child. To some of those people the difference between "the n-word" and the [i]actual[/i] n-word might be the difference between someone talking about car accidents and someone posting graphic photos of violent car accidents to someone who was in a car wreck and has bad memories of it. Is the chance that saying the actual word causing a really bad reaction in someone slim? Yes. Is avoiding that worth the "inconvenience" of typing something with the same number of keystrokes? I'd hope that most people would say yes.

I think unless you want to end up substituting every insult, we'll just have to not get offended when someone has a legitimate reason to use that word (which is obviously rare anyways).
