One time I was Google messaging my gf, talking about lingerie. I also told her "don't worry be happy" at an earlier point. A few hours later I was getting ads for mastectomy bras and bobby mcferrin songs. Very odd. Very invasive.
If its anything like the emails: Just mention death and suffering every now and again they wont use content from that message for adverts.

Okay. I signed away my right to privacy when I fired up my web browser. I don't expect much less than this.
Thats why I will always keep my Ghostery active unless I need some social stuff.
Nice! I was using Disconnect but it would always muck up Twitter by failing to load avatars. Hopefully this is a bit better.
People don't use ad-blocker?
Should really unblock websites that aren't obnoxious with advertisements, stuff can't stay online without revenue.

Can someone explain why targeted ads are a bad idea? Would you rather see ads for tampons, or a videogame?
Should really unblock websites that aren't obnoxious with advertisements, stuff can't stay online without revenue.
I always keep ads for webcomics and tutorials sites that I frequent because they at least they've done something to deserve my attention.
good thing i've been googling "free money" for the last 6 and a half hours the only targeted ads i'll get will make me rich. suck on that, facebook
Can someone explain why targeted ads are a bad idea? Would you rather see ads for tampons, or a videogame?
Target ad seems like a good idea in that you will be shown ad that you may actually be interested in. For example, if you are into snowboarding, you will be shown deals of your local ski resorts, mountains, and equipment stores. However, the problem is that the things you search for should be private. It would be quite invasive if your Facebook ad start showing suggestions for things you have been searching for online in private. For example, let's say you got some dysfunction that is rather embarrassing and you are searching for drugs on-line to resolve this problem. It would be quite embarrassing if ads for said drug show up on your Facebook ads...
I don't think Facebook would allow furry porn ads on their website.
who actually visits ads

Facebook and Google can target their ads directly to my AdBlock ass.
I'm reasonably certain that AdBlocker wouldn't block something like this. Last I heard AdBlocker still loads ads then just hides them. Something like Ghostery should work though I believe. (Things like Facebook and G+ buttons are something it can specifically target too.)
In most scenarios, Adblock Plus does prevent the actual network requests. You can see in the Chrome dev tools that the request is prepared, but canceled before it is ever sent.
will facebook allow gay porn ads

It very well could have changed since then or even simply been wrong.
Facebook people concerned about privacy. :v:
and this is why i have ABP and ghostery installed
Privacy? What privacy? You have no privacy, valued customer.
If you use facebook and you don't buy ads you are a product, not a customer. Advertisers are their customers.
I really hate to be the devil's advocate here but Some of you are a little over-concerned. Yeah, I like my privacy as much as anyone else but.. To go as far as stopping using Facebook entirely? Or using a VM to use it?? What the shit As it's already been stated, shit like this has been happening for years, most of which you've probably all fallen "victim" to and don't even know it unless you're super tinfoil overprotective paranoid extreme. The only real way you can avoid any privacy invasiveness is just stop using technology altogether, because all of the existing "preventive measures" don't work all the time, and "privacy invasion" in electronics with online connectivity is all around you. It's highly unlikely that a real person is going to see your search or browsing data. Only machines. Even if anyone did, they would probably not give half a fuck what was in it. Like doctors, there's no reason to be embarrassed about telling your symptoms, they've done it all, they've seen it all. And if someone REALLY wants to see your browsing and search data for any sort of malicious intent, they will get it, somehow, some way, whether you like it or not. So what I'm saying is, lighten up a little. Yeah sure it's completely fine to want your privacy, but the reactions in this thread are a bit ridiculous imo. The more you tense up and draw into a figurative turtle shell, the harder it is to enjoy any sort of entertainment on the internet. And besides, would you rather see ads you actually may be interested in, or see completely random ads that have little to no correlation to you?
I hate targeted ads. Somebody sent me a link to someone mentioning they're single, whether it be a joke or a news post or something? Dating ads all over. Went on Amazon and bought a video game? Free to play mobile shit ads. Went to buy jewelery for a present? Jewelery ads. Been on a website to get info on how to manually remove certain viruses from client's computers? Antivirus and "PC Optimizer" ads. Hell, I once was reading a news article about that brony documentary and I had My Little Pony ads show up on other sites. I now just use Ghostery and Adblock (along with NoScript), but it's so annoying that these websites can make a profile of you that is not accurate in the slightest. I keep getting fucking YouTube poop videos and Minecraft let's plays by 10 year olds recommended to me by YouTube because I once saw something Team Fortress or Minecraft related. If these sites were giving me ads that actually were useful and interesting maybe I wouldn't be annoyed, but I don't like the idea that there's a profile of me that's not even close to what I'm actually like. I don't even care that human eyes aren't going to see it, it's annoying, frustrating and even though I have a Facebook account and my dumb college leaked my contact info I still value what little privacy I have left.
I don't care. I get better ads, Facebook gets money. Win-win.
That's funny I can't hear the ads over the sound of this adblock plus.

oh shit, they'll find out about my accidental un-private mode rule34 or e621! what ever shall I do? good thing there's adblock
Looks like I will have to clear my internet history more often. Otherwise, I'll see nothing but the crude porn that I fap to.
