Latvia supplied almost a quarter of a million troops to the Germans so its not really surprising at all

It's more about the connotation of the symbol when it's combined with the Imperial German colours than the swastika itself.

There's still a massive air of interest around Third Reich era German uniform, when people think about cool looking and intimidating uniforms they usually think about the Nazi era Wehrmacht.

Reenacters usually use replica uniforms. The market doesn't care too much for Imperial stuff so it's not as popular it seems. Which is unfortunate, I think most of the uniforms from any country of that time period are awesome.

That's because they knew what they were doing, the Nazis for all their dick flaws and awful acts, they knew that image was an incredibly powerful tool, when you're struggling to feed yourself and there's tension in the country when you see folk who seem to know their shit and look impeccably dressed and well presented folk tend to listen, if not agree.
I'm not a Nazi, I just read it for the articles, err- I mean I'm just into it for the fashion.

Of course; Nazi architecture and uniform was intentionally designed to be incredibly intimidating and awe-inspiring. SS uniform in particular had an immense effect on the populations of invaded countries.
Huh. I don't honestly see the harm in it if it's explicitly for historical re-enaction purposes and there's a background check to ensure no neo-nazis or extremists get in and try to ruin it. I'd eat there once.

The point is though that there's nothing wrong with the swastika itself, so if you're already having a nazi-themed dinner with uniforms and all I don't see how adding swastikas makes it worse.

The owner of the Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit restaurant, Mario Pierzchalski, spoke to the Star Tribune on Tuesday and defended the sixth annual gathering at his restaurant.
“We live in a free country…but from the comments I see, a lot of people they don’t see what freedom is. If I break the law, punish me. But we did this for so many years and everything was fine.”

Pierzchalski said he’s received threatening phone messages and online comments, some threatening to burn down the restaurant. Pierzchalski is a Polish immigrant himself, which makes his defense of the controversial dinner even stranger. He claims it was a well-rounded event, with a few men dressed as Italian soldiers and one American soldier.
Pierzchalski and Steben say it’s an event for actors trying to get into character for WWII movies … which would be fine if it didn’t sound like some attendees were Nazi enthusiasts or actual Nazis.
[B]A former Gasthof’s employee who left the restaurant two years ago says he worked a number of events held by the group depicted in the photos.
He told City Pages that during an event, one of the group members asked him if he was German. When he told the group member he was Polish, he was asked if he had any family in the war.
“I said, ‘Yes, my grandfather was in a Nazi concentration camp.’ And they said ‘Oh, well, water under the bridge then,’” the source says.[/B]
Employees were routinely asked by guests if they were German, and one female server, who was German, was told by a faux SS officer, “Oh, we can make the perfect babies together because you’re German and I’m German.”

Not sure if Latvia was allied with the nazis but a lot of countries allied with the nazis because the soviets were their enemies.
