Work for the dole? Why weren't those jobs available for the unemployed before hand? And working for the dole would probably be more expensive as you would have to supply these dole workers with safety equipment and other work related equipment.
Volunteer work. It's meant to get people doing something and being constructive towards the community.
Malcolm Turnbull plz
I'm forced to volunteer at an aged care home, oh no! Woe is me, slaving under the welfare system!
You can choose not to do the volunteer work, you just miss your dole payment. That's fair enough.
The problem is the program is mostly political because it works on the assumption that everyone on unemployment benefits are just lazy slackers who can't be bothered to look for work and are rorting the system.
Which is in reality a miniscule amount. The people who are and have been for a while on unemployment benefits generally have been trying their best to no avail to get work. Then they're made to spend less time looking for work and more time volunteering? Hardly helpful.
Additionally if you don't think that I'm correct in assuming that most people on the benefits are in fact honest people or non-lazy people, why on earth would you want them working in nursing homes which is what they're proposing? You want someone who's 'committing fraud' to be helping out your elderly relative?
Did he ever stop to think that maybe they're being criticised because they're doing something wrong?

What are you CRAZY!? It must be them not us!
Wouldn't criticizing the government when they screw up be arguing in favor OF Australia? As in, the citizens of the country? The people who live in Australia?
GetUp! reported that Tony Abbott's government has started investigating how much the ABC and SBS cost tax payers every year, this just reeks with fucking budget cuts and I'm not happy about that

Just wait for all the managers and top level staff at the ABC and SBS get replaced by Tony's cronies after the 'review'.

There'd be too much opposition to those changes or replacements, I doubt Tony's boys would be able to get their foot in the door without being shunned straight away

GetUp! Is just a pro-labor movement in recent years. Jumping to premature conclusions like that is ridiculous, of course the liberals are looking at sectors to cut, they're looking to make cuts where they are able to effectively, it's their job. People overreact to these scare campaigns, when the cuts are actually proposed then people should pick up the pitchforks and torches. Right now nothing has actually happened, and there's no way he's going to cut SBS and ABC which affects their operations, Tony Abbott is stupid, but his ministers would pull him up on that if he tried to. Not to mention there'd obviously be a public backlash, no way is anyone that stupid to cut SBS or ABC funding.
To add to what Tasm said above, quite a few other Liberals (such as Malcolm Turnbull) actully are in defense of the ABC, Tony is just having a whinge.

They're definitely posturing themselves towards removing the amnesty the ABC and SBS has for efficiency dividends (a fancy way of saying imposed cuts) So its worth it pointing this out and getting angry about it before it can be slipped in quietly.

lol except you'd never get cuts in on the ABC quietly. There would be a massive backlash by the public, hell, nothing has even been proposed yet and GetUp! is having a whinge.
ABC is the shining beacon of hope against the Murdoch empire.
I couldn't see them hitting it without committing political suicide.
I'm just going off what I read in the papers today tasm. Its probable that the review into how the ABC spends its money will conveniently expose the 'waste' by which an efficiency dividend could be made palatable to much of the public. I do agree there is a difference between GetUp! having a winge and reality, but Abbott and the Liberals have set themselves up to make cuts in all sectors of government and I don't think it is far-fetched to see the conclusion involving the ABC having its belt tightened.
