Even in moderation it's still detrimental to your health. You don't think it's silly to sacrifice your health to feel good for a few hours?
Do you know how much of your life a few drinks every so often even cuts off? It's probably not too many as long as you don't damage your liver from the alcohol, or damage yourself from doing drunk things.

[editline]19th July 2013[/editline] The gene that my family is afflicted with is only/mostly passed through males, so I probably have it but my twin sister most likely doesn't.
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/199398.php
Maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about but people who lose themselves with alcohol aren't afflicted with some sort of genetic issue. They have some emotional and other issues in their life they are trying to get away from, and they use alcohol as a way to escape. People who drink in moderation, or even party, aren't going to become alcoholics because they had a few family members who were alcoholics. I hardly ever drink. Maybe that will change, I guess it's just something that I've never had a great desire for.
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/199398.php

Charles Holahan, professor of psychology, The University of Texas at Austin, and team at The University of Texas and Stanford University's Center for Health Care Evaluation identified several confounding factors linked to alcohol abstention. They found that a significant number of abstainers (teetotalers) in their study sample were former-problem drinkers, as well as people with health problems and health risk factors, such as poor physical activity and a high degree of tobacco smoking, compared to the moderate drinker's sample. Put simply - many of the abstainers were either ex-alcoholics or people with factors that would increase the risk of premature death (that is why probably they stopped drinking).
Did you even read that?
I'll give you that, saying "sacrificing" is a bit exaggerative but it's still not that great for you.
So maybe then it is a quality of life drug, not a quantity of life. It might not help you live longer, but it can enhance the quality of the life of the person. Of course, if it is used to seek relaxation, the person should seek what is causing stress in their life to seek freedom from having to use the drug. Same if they are using it when they are depressed. I guess, in other words, drugs are to be used, not abused?
People drink because it makes you feel fucking good, that's where the enjoyment stems from. And I'm not sure why you're comparing soda to alcohol, they have entirely different purposes.
When I drink it only makes me lose my sense of "sensibleness", either turns me into a giddy fucker or I become the most depressed thing since the rock outside your window. I rarely drink because of this and the fact I only like cider and its cheaper to get something like coke which I'll enjoy more. Just blanket stating it makes people feel good isn't really a good point Star as this can be thrown at anything, especially when alcohol actually makes people more depressed than happy on record because you know, it's a fucking depressant. I'd rather get high as a fucking kite off caffeine instead.
Dad's a functioning alcoholic, neghbors are just alcoholics. Watching them get hammered every weekend and proceed to argue and bitch and fight over shit is what has deterred me from drinking.

Also caffeine is a worse drug if you end up getting addicted to it.
I don't drink alcohol because personally I don't see enjoyment out of it. What's the point? I'd rather drink a coke over a beer any day. I don't give a shit what anyone else wants to put in their body.
I feel as though you've never drank once in your life, for some reason
I'm honestly very scared of becoming an alcoholic because I've a family history of depression and alcoholism, and I've always been a very unhappy person. As a result I've only ever drank twice and only to a buzz at that. But I'm also a very stressed out person secretly and I'm pretty sure I'm liable to have a heart attack by 50, which most guys seem to deal with by having a beer after work sometimes. SHIET
I feel as though you've never drank once in your life, for some reason
This seems to be the case with most of these threads. Straight edge kids thinking they're cool and above everyone else until they realise that not all alcohol tastes the same and you won't throw up and act like a spastic from a few drinks. There isn't really a reason to abstain yourself from having more fun (for the most part) unless you have medical issues or you were previously an alcoholic.
a lot of people here seem to not drink because they know alcoholics. so does that mean you all can't moderate your drinking like them?

SHIET
I wouldn't say drink a beer every day after work. Eventually you'll wind up craving that one beer during the day, and that craving, to me at least, is alcoholism. Getting drunk is totally fine as long as you don't make it a "clockwork" type thing. So, once in a blue moon of sorts. I agree with this study, especially at the end. There are definitely other factors involved. You can't just go to a desk job every day, go home, have a drink, and be healthy...there's gotta be some kind of physical activity involved, whether it be work-related or self-induced. I say this because one of my distant relatives lived up to 105 years old. She was a farmer, drank one beer a day until the day she died but she had constant physical activity involved to shake off any bad body effects. Sure, that's a bit of a misguided study to judge off of one person, but surely you can understand my reasoning.
Both sides of my family have alcoholism. Like, I do not know anyone from parents to uncles to grandparents that weren't, at one point, alcoholics. That being said, everything in moderation.

A drug which is a depressant is a drug which lowers or depresses arousal levels and reduces excitability
I don't drink alcohol because I can't stand the taste of any of it and with the money I save from not buying it, I can put towards something else, fuel for my car, video games and other stuff that I want. It's fine if people drink, after all it isn't my money or body.
Both sides of my family have alcoholism. Like, I do not know anyone from parents to uncles to grandparents that weren't, at one point, alcoholics. That being said, everything in moderation.
Hence, light drinkers. A glass of wine a day is actually very healthy. As is alcohol in general in smaller amounts. A shot of Jägermeister or any other herbal liqueur can help when your stomach is upset. Problem is a lot of people who dont/will not drink seem to do it based off two things; Their parents or siblings have a bad history with alcohol. I can understand that and don't blame them. Then there's the people who dont drink it because "you can have fun without it". You can, but you're completely missing the point.
No? Im still going to die anyway
"I'm going to die anyway" is pretty shit logic unless you're well into your 90's.
I drank a bunch in my first two years of college but I've since stopped, for many reasons. Mostly, it's because the stuff tastes like complete ass, and because I have no reason to get HELLA WASTED anymore. I don't have anything to escape or forget about, I can have just as much fun when I'm sober, and I couldn't care less how cool people think I am at parties.
Not really, Drinking occasionally doesn't take your life expectancy by decades so whats the point in trying to save a couple of years? [editline]19th July 2013[/editline]
"I'm going to die anyway" is pretty shit logic unless you're well into your 90's.

I'll give you that, saying "sacrificing" is a bit exaggerative but it's still not that great for you.
You want to rid yourself of everything that is detrimental to your health? Okay, be prepared to live a very long and incredibly bland life. I'd rather live a shorter life full of enjoyment, and that includes occasionally drinking.
I'm using this as an excuse to get hammered party at my house you're all invited
I'm using this as an excuse to get hammered party at my house you're all invited
I'll bring the keg
I don't drink because it caused my mom's side of the family to "break up" and not see each other. It's been 12 years since I have seen them :(
I'll give you that, saying "sacrificing" is a bit exaggerative but it's still not that great for you.
Neither is sitting in front of a computer day in and day out. People say things like "oh I just don't see the point" or "well yeah but it's bad for your health" So? Eating Taco Bell is bad for your health, breathing in the air in certain parts of the world is bad for your health, the list goes on. And to people who say "I don't see the point", guess what, there's no point in playing video games, or going on forums on the internet, or pretty much ANYTHING. People do this shit because they're bored and want to kill time/have fun in their pointless lives.
because it's entirely impossible to have fun when you're not under the influence of a drug.
Nobody is saying this at all.
I've drink my fair share... and I turn 21 in November.
