Nondrinkers May Have Higher Mortality Risk Than Light Drinkers, but Reasons for Abstaining Make a Bi
Why is it that some people in this thread seem to be interpreting "I don't drink" as "I fucking hate all those retards who drink!"?
Probably because they feel bad about their drinking and need to defend their chronic alcoholism against a non-existant person reminding them of it.
I love how Starpluck claims Anti-Alcoholics are "just nerd shut-ins" and you better drink to be cool and social!!! This is a prime example of the sorta person that creates the peer pressure that makes alcoholics.
I don't think you know the difference between chronic alcoholism and 'drinking'.

I don't think someone who drinks on occasion is going to take "I don't drink" as "I fucking hate all those retards who drink!"
I have a hard time finding a drink I actually like. Not one beer has impressed me so far because they all leave this taste of saltine crackers in my mouth. Champagne? Nah. Wine? Strange aftertaste from the ones I've tried.
Although this apple ale I found a couple weeks ago... thats nice.

Also my roommate is fucking stupid when he's drunk and sometimes I feel like he's stupid because he thinks I find it funny, which I don't.
"I'm gonna go for a third drink!"
'No dude thats stupid'
"No its not, here I'll even let you watch me pour it."
'-sigh- fine'
'okay stop thats enough'
"okay lol"
10 minutes later I find he topped his half empty drink, making it 50% vodka. I hid the booze after that and 10 minutes later he spewing chunks in the bathroom.
I don't think this thread has been all that bad, but usually, alcohol related threads get pretty bad with many people acting, and implying, and sometimes directly saying, drinking is bad for you and you're dumb for it.
This thread, as I said, is pretty calm. However, you still see some people trying to make the implication that even though they don't care what you do with your body, it's still dumb. Then there's you, the person saying every single person here defending alcohol in any way, is in fact, a full on alcoholic, ashamed of their behaviour.
I think you may be over reaching by more than a little bit.

try rum or vodka coolers or some kind of mixed drink to that effect. those are generally pretty good beginner drinks.
I always encourage people to drink. It makes some boring/weird ass nerds like some of you guys fun and bearable.
I can respect if you don't want to drink because your trying to lose weight or have important business to get done the next day or something.
God this thread reeks of 13-year-old kids regurgitating DARE PSAs.

Never listen to your friends. Peer pressure is evil. Your friends are killing themselves. You're smarter than those losers. Just say NO to drugs. DARE to DARE!
Really though that's pretty much what they hammer into your head. Dehumanization of your buddies, you're perfect, etc.
The only thing I drink is a good sake, better if warmed. And I only really drink it at special occasions. Whiskey, Gin, Scotch, etc. all taste and smell like magic marker to me and aren't enjoyable at all. I can't even smell beer or the fermented grain gives me a migraine.
But one side of my family is awash with bad alcoholics and I experienced it first hand as a child, hence why I only drink a few times a year and never enough to get buzzed or drunk.
I very occasionally have a alcoholic drink with my friends. but 99 percent of the time i choose not to drink for the following reasons:
1) I don't like anything that messes with my head
2) I like saving a lot of money
3) most taste like crap to me
4) when i have consumed a lot of alcohol, it didn't do much for me
5) I normally drive everywhere, i don't have to worry about legal limits
6) I don't like the drinking culture we have here, in fact it disgusts me.
Surely everyone has a 100% mortality risk since we're all going to die eventually?
[sp]except for me[/sp]
Why do people use Alcoholism as the main reason to not drink, you're pretty much just saying you have no self control if you think that drinking even light amounts will make you an alcoholic.
I like beer.

Except drinking stuff like Vodka, Whiskey, Wine or Rum is usually healthier than your average soda.

For 4, try Tequila.
To be honest i'd rather die younger than live at 90+ waiting to pass away. i'd take getting drunk with my mates any day over sitting there with dementia and many health problems at an old age possibly regretting on missing out on so many experiences.
Seems like some people think that drinking is the only fun thing in life.
My reason for not drinking is really because I don't think it's any fun at all. I also usually don't get along with people who drink regularly. It's not that I have anything against drinkers, I just think there's a lot more fun things you can do.
It's also really costly (especially here in Norway), so I'm very happy that most of my friends are non-drinkers or rare drinkers.
There's probably also individuals who tasted liquor and probably went "omg this tastes nasty never drinking alcohol again!"
This is me.
You don't see me trying to force people to go dry.
What the hell really is a legitimate reason not to drink? Is simply not enjoying alcohol not legitimate enough? I didn't know you had to have some sort of condition or horrible background to abstain.
To me what a lot of you are you saying is you have to drink to be normal and if you don't, you're a fucking weirdo loser. I would go to parties, get shitfaced with my friends, but I never really had fun doing that. In fact I hated every time my friends would want to drink. I would only ever drink because that's what everyone else would do, and I pretended to enjoy it because everyone else looked like they were having a good time, when in reality I would be saying to myself "I'd rather be doing anything else right now".
I choose not to drink because it's just not me. However people think you're a weirdo for not drinking because "I don't have a good reason" and "that's what everyone else does". Like for real, tell someone you just don't like to drink, and some people will look at you like you are a straight up freak or think you are doing something wrong. Well fuck it man, I decide what's fun for me, and drinking is not that. I haven't had a drink all year and you know what, I feel way better not drinking, than pretending to be someone I'm not. And that's all the reason I need. So, yes, I VOLUNTARILY choose not to drink.
I couldn't give a flying fuck if it's good or bad for you, I just don't like to drink. Call me a square, or what the fuck ever, I'm just tired about how much drinking is the social norm.

You sound stressed. You need a drink!
Personally I don't drink because A. I'm underaged (America :v:) and B. It's really not good for my diabetes.
I don't drink alcohol because personally I don't see enjoyment out of it. What's the point? I'd rather drink a coke over a beer any day.
I don't give a shit what anyone else wants to put in their body.
I think the sugar in soda will kill you faster than alcohol.
I like to drink with friends and company or when I'm depressed. Social drinking can really break the ice but any other time, I'll just have water.
People who don't drink are generally not fun people. Talking from experience :D
I am okay with people not drinking during parties but please don't be that grumpy guy with crossed arms at the end of the couch. It definitely says: "I'm better than you because I don't drink" and doesn't make us want to have fun with you.

If you can't have fun without alcohol then drink, if you can enjoy your time without alcohol then don't.

You just think they're not a fun person because of the alcohol.
I used to feel awesome like everyone else when drunk or nearly, today it just make me feel dull, its annoying
I used to feel awesome like everyone else when drunk or nearly, today it just make me feel dull, its annoying
Yeah, pretty much this. I can't stand being around drunk friends when I'm the only sober one, it's just incredibly boring.
You just think they're not a fun person because of the alcohol.
No, I mean they are not fun at all, alcohol or not.
i drink alcohol because i like
No, I mean they are not fun at all, alcohol or not.
Saying all non-drinkers are boring is a bit of a stretch (most of them are, I know I was!). If someone is uncaring enough they can be fun without drinking, though they'd probably be drinking if they didn't give that many shits anyway.
Yeah, pretty much this. I can't stand being around drunk friends when I'm the only sober one, it's just incredibly boring.
I mean when IM drunk, it just doestn feel as good at all, maybe i did it too often.
Just like weed it used to be really awesome, ive smoked weed almost everyday for 5 years and now its totally not the same thing
This is me.

Why don't you try a different drink? Also I don't think I've ever heard of someone drinking a beer or whatever for the first time and enjoying it, the taste grows on you over time.
Disliking the taste of one drink and then forgetting about drinking all together seems a little over the top really. It's the same with a lot of thing's in life.

Smoke less and drink less for a while to lower your tolerance.

Get drunk and have a laugh then, because your friends are probably thinking the same thing about you.
