Only reason most people rage, is because a few years ago, nobody would even imagine Valve to do something like this.
Money's money, really. For all of the content they create (or add, in some cases) for free for their games, I personally see idiots buying hats as an extra source of income to make up for it. v:v:v
I bet EP3 or any of Valve's next games will also feature hats.
I bet EP3 or any of Valve's next games will also feature hats.

Half-Life 3 Hat Update - Can now buy Pink, Frilly Hat for Alyx - shove that angst aside! - Can now buy HEV Suit Helmet - for too long has logic winded your face. - Both items can be: found in random drops in Co-op; be crafted via blueprints; or traded.
v:v:v
Where's my store for Chell? I want hats for singleplayer too.
Don't give them any ideas.
I wonder if it ever occured to Rock, Paper, Shotgun that you can... just not buy them? I admit it all seems ridiculous, but be glad that you can't buy items that DO give you an advantage in game.
Just play the PS3 version; it doesn't have hats and they don't show up on any hatted PC players that join your game (for both you and them). :v:
Until Valve updates the PS3 version.
Snip.
Goddamn it people it's PURE AESTHETICS. It has absolutely NO effect on the gameplay. And even though you might not like it someone, somewhere does, and he's happy, and he's not going to be affecting your experience in the game if he bought a freaking moustache for his robot. If you're jealous enough of those simple things to complain about them, then it's obviously worth enough to you to buy it, if not then don't buy it and don't complain about it. You guys are taking this way out of proportion.
It has immense effects on the community and as long as people support those stores by using them you can be sure there will be a hat shop in Portal 3, L4D3, TF3, HL3:DM, DOD2 and CS2. Who needs reputation when you can have money?!
As long EP3 won't have this it's OK.
I cancelled my Steam subscription because of this.

Who needs reputation when you can have money?!
If anything this is another experiment. TF2 is a 100% multiplayer game where as Portal 2 is 50% with not as much replay value. So depending on how well the store does we may or may not see it again.
So depending on how well the store does we may or may not see it again.
Too bad they were already crying on 10 SPUF pages for their items being deleted not even 6 hours after the game's release. Even if it fails in Portal 2, it's successful in TF2.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T BUY THEM
Seriously, no one is forcing you to buy it, so people might want to customise their player model, no big deal.
won't buy therefore don't give two shits
It's mostly an experiment and maybe a standing joke if the TF2 blog is to be believed:
All of us here on the TF2 team have been asking to play Portal 2 for months now. "Go away," the Portal guys told us. "You'll just try to put hats in it." "Whaaattttt?" we said. "That's—psshhhh. If anything, we'll probably tell you to take some hats out of the game." "There are no hats in the game." After this, there was an awkward ten-minute silence while all of on the TF2 team stared at the Portal guys, waiting for them to start laughing. Instead, they just told us to go away again. That's when we realized: with so little time left before release, we couldn't afford to waste any time playing the game. We had to fix it. Now. So late last night we snuck into the Portal 2 source code and copy/pasted some hats into it. You're welcome, Portal 2 team. Today, we pass the fruits of our clandestine game-saving labor onto you, the hat-loving public (or as you're more commonly known, the public). If you own any of the following hats in Team Fortress 2, you'll be able to equip them on your Cooperative Testing Initiative robots in Portal 2: Mann Co. Cap Prince Tavish's Crown Pyro's Beanie Fancy Fedora Master's Yellow Belt Tyrant's Helm If you've been on the fence up until now—and who could blame you—you've finally got a reason to buy Portal 2. Courtesy of Team Fortress 2. The best game that Valve makes with a "2" on the end.
Hats makes some sort of sense in TF2 but not really in Portal 2. Though some of the biggest complaints about TF2 won't be relevant to Portal 2; "It ruined the art style" well considering the hats are in Portal 2 from the start, no problem. "The community makes it worse" for as long as it's only two player co-op, there'll be less chat spam asking for trading hats.
I dunno why but I hope there is a fez hat Just think of it, P-Body and Atlas with fez's
Alright, here's the rub. Yes, the DLC is optional. Yes, it's $80 for a bunch of meaningless skins, hats, and some admittedly cool gestures. You don't have to purchase ANY of it. That being said, gamers are perfectly right to be up in arms about it because it exists. The fact that it exists means that people are going to pay for it. No matter what you might think about how needless this shit is, people will buy it. And Valve knows it. Therefore, this kind of thing becomes justified because people are dumb enough to buy it. The blame really lies with gamers and not developers, because developers are just pandering to the stupidity of players; can you blame them? They are a business, after all. But the community should be mad at itself for allowing Valve to dangle this stuff in front of them. Everyone should be mad things like this exist. Remember when Valve used to give stuff away for free? They're no suckers, y'know. If people are willing to pay, take advantage of them. And believe me, $80 for some gestures, skins, and hats is taking advantage of people. It'd be rape if the consumer weren't dumb enough to consent to it.
so i found a hat already is that good [editline]20th April 2011[/editline] and a flag
I think the gestures and the skins are a good idea but accessories, flags and any other bullshit that sticks out of you is too far
Welp. That's dumb.
As long EP3 won't have this it's OK.
no way man i need a custom paint job on my hev suit and also a tophat and a pimp cane replacement for crowbar
This is why EP3 is taking so long, they are still designing all the hats.
I would like gestures better than hats in the 360/ps3 version
I thought it said Robin Needs Hats. Not Robots Need Hats [editline]20th April 2011[/editline]
no way man i need a custom paint job on my hev suit and also a tophat and a pimp cane replacement for crowbar
Mr Gorden Pimpman
This is why EP3 is taking so long, they are still designing all the hats.
Who knows, they might even be designing shoes or even pants!
Who knows, they might even be designing shoes or even pants!
What are you on about, there are only hats that Valve cares about.
You can get these normally, you don't have to buy them fucks sake facepunch
What? Is there something wrong with watching one of your favorite developers act so greedy that they now are trying to squeeze a couple thousands bucks out of people that actually decide to buy this stuff and feel a little annoyed?
hwhy the hell they wont add such things to cs or dod,Axis with Chapeau or terrorists with Halo
