Are you implying police computers that deal with email aren't connected to the internet?
No, the computers that have the email addresses to start with.
Is this good or bad?
Very horrible.
Internal Police emails contain A LOT of civilian data. Names, SSNs. Case #, narratives, DL #s, Addresses, outcomes, and officer opinion on it. Shit is going to hit the fan with this.
There are reasons things like this are private. But how did they manage to get the emails? Was it a public computer connected to the internet or something?
Yeah, most email servers are hooked up to the Internet so people can check their email from outside the office.
It was probably a crap Exchange server.
I remember when Anonymous meant a bunch of cool dudes that only messed with people who messed with them
now it's a bunch of wannabe kiddie "freedom fighters" who cry like babies

Only when they got caught for being n00bs.

All the email is stored on a central server. You don't have to access the individual computers used by the people who have an account. Like to get the email of whoever johndoe@missouripd.gov is, you don't have to hack John Doe's computer, you just hack missouripd.gov's server.
Same thing with services like Gmail, if you hack their server you can get the emails of everyone who uses the service. But Google has a pretty good idea of how to secure their servers unlike most small businesses or organizations who run MS Exchange because thats what's marketed to them by the people who think anything made by Microsoft is any good.

frankly, anonymous stopped being cool the moment they started taking themselves too seriously. they're not remotely as powerful as they think they are, and only foul things up trying to be internet heroes.

I know that, but I wouldn't think that that central server was connected to the internet.

It has to be. Otherwise the cops could not check their work email (which has a lot of info in it) in their squads.
I know that, but I wouldn't think that that central server was connected to the internet.
Yep. They do that so people can check their email while not in the office.
Starpluck's avatar fits for this thread so much.
this also has far reaching implications for law enforcement. this is going to make many people think twice about "snitching" for the police. this could fuck up a lot of operations, present and future.
If Anonymous is working to create a more transparent government, isn't revealing confidential information only going to make them tighten up security even more?
Seeing as how this involves multiple police agencies and the OP gave a link to a torrent, can someone who downloaded it tell me if there is anything in there about the San Bernardino Sheriffs Department? I'm on dial up.
Anonymous has the right idea, their execution however is questionable.
I really don't get where these people get the whole "cops ride around and mass murder people for fun" thing.
Of course they're probably the same people who think the entire official US military doctrine of war is "torture innocent puppies and civilians".

All it takes is one story and people begin to generalize. Also tickets, tickets everywhere.
I have another question though, if the previous team was made up of people mainly from foreign countries like England, why aren't they going after other police forces? Is it just me or do these guys only focus on the US even though its not the US who are making the biggest busts.

Right idea
Get snitches killed
Yeah okay
All the cops i've ever known are great people, and I know a lot.

Its anecdotal and you'll soon here people start saying that in poorer areas police treat minorities like shit.
I know 3 officers and a FBI agent soooo yeah. I know that the worst of the worst number less than 5% but everyone thinks there is a rampant problem.

Im not talking about this particular scenario, this time they may be in the wrong. I am referring to the defacement of Westboro Baptist Church website, among other things.
This isn't fucking kindergarten, you're not getting snitched on for taking an extra apple
Fucking stupid ass "freedom fighters", endangering innocent people who just want killers off the street

I haven't seen them do one thing I agree with
I don't like the WBC too, but it's either petty vandalism or endangering people's lives
Anonymous used to be cool before everybody and their brother thought they were the leader of it and that it was some massive international underground superpower. And really, who do they think they're saving? Do they even know? The people they're fighting are the police that keep order in the streets and the concerned citizens who report crimes. They're a bunch of assholes and shouldn't be doing this.
