When I read "US helps Vietnam to eradicate..." on the main page I came in expecting something completely different.
too little too late, but its good we're at least doing something, considering the fucking travesty that is agent orange [editline]19th June 2011[/editline] hahahaha its funny because shes going to die at a young age because she was deformed early in her life of poverty thanks to the use of biological warfare by the united states in a war that was completely unnecessary wow man good one that really cracked me up
A zinger sarcasm post right here. :3:
spray anti-herbicide. It could be Agent Blue so it matches agent orange.
And have vague and ambiguous reasons for doing so. Blue and Orange Morality all up in this bitch... :ninja:
Help? they should be in jail for crimes against humanity. To the idiots that rated me dumb, read up on the war before you go rating people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai_Massacre also The US had no real reason to be their other then to piss off the Russians and the Chinese. I realise that they are doing the right thing now by trying to fix the problem but most of the damage has already been done. What they did was like dropping a nuclear bomb and saying fuck the future generations let them suffer.
-snip- People are rating you dumb because you don't realize what affects it had on EVERYONE involved. The majority of Vietnam vets are mentally unstable, homeless, or dead. It was a terrible situation for everyone, and redemption for all of us is what we need. No negativity, no speaking of only the past. Moving forward is what we are doing, and what the Vietnamese are doing.
Still rating you dumb because you're a shithead who can't even see the effects that it had on the people back home. My dad has had two different forms of cancer and PTSD like you wouldn't fucking believe. The generations before us paid for it asshole, using specific examples of a hundred troops does NOT represent the sins of an entire nation. You even heard of the Kent State? Yeah, those were American students who DIED protesting the war.
the soldiers are definitely victims just like the vietnamese, they were totally unaware of the negative effects of agent orange and they suffered the same consequences that the vietnamese did, only on a smaller scale. blame should be placed on the people who engineered agent orange for use as a weapon, not the people who were told it was just a harmless pesticide. sorry for your dad's health problems.

They contracted DOW to manufacture the herbicides and in huge quantities of it in presumably a short period. The guys who made it from DOW probably never bothered the studies and the long-term effects.

He's a 'Nam vet too and was actually exposed to Agent Orange at several points during his deployment. He's neither mentally unstable, homeless, nor deceased. Still, he goes to the VA every other week and sees the not so lucky other vets there...it really gets you, how a lot of vets have the mental strength to go on after the suffering they experienced and still do.
SHouldn't the blame be on the CIA?
Why are people trying to justify the use of AO because of what the Vietnamese did to US troops when they invaded? They invaded Vietnam for no reason other than "Goddamn commies!" and suddenly start getting all shitty when the people of that country try and repel said invasion. I'm not saying it's right to kill ANYONE, but people really need to stop and consider the circumstances from the other sides viewpoint.

In the long run though, the majority or Vietnamese are happy and healthy as Communists :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_Orange#Chemical_description_and_toxicology "Internal memoranda revealed Monsanto Corporation (a manufacturer of 2,4,5-T) had informed the U.S. government as early as 1952 that 2,4,5-T was contaminated with a toxic chemical"
Its really sad the affects of agent orange had on people. There is everything from a variety of cancer to birth defects such as mental and physical diseases. I think its right that the US helps Vietnam with healthcare. Its a way of saying sorry for the war and the damage we caused. To those who say we shouldn't help or Vietnam or US are cruel, inhumane blah blah blah, you're being blissful, ignorant and a douche. You are basically saying something similar like "The Japanes meltdown deserved to happen because of karma as a result of Pearl Habor" (Which did actually happen a lot on facebook and twitter). Forgive and forget, people. Shit went down in history that nobody likes, or wanted to happen, and as a result we won't let it happen again. There are some people who may cause despair, but I mean that doesn't mean everyone from a large group of people wants evil to occur.
That was a bad war. It's good we're making reparations.
That was a bad war. It's good we're making reparations.
and yet the US is engaging in another unjust war five decades later it's almost as if they disregarded history
and yet the US is still engaging in another unjust war five decades later it's almost as if they disregarded history
They haven't. They're just trying to look like they have.
They haven't. They're just trying to look like they have.
Actually, the big lesson we pulled from Vietnam was treatment of our troops. Especially because of what happen to them afterward. The government may fuck up but when the populace finds out they release a shit storm because they now understand the sacrifice.
The biggest lesson from Vietnam is simple... Don't hate the green, hate the greed. My grandfathers house got firebombed on the garage door, and baby killer was written on the door after he returned from his tour. After that him, and his whole family was moved on the base in fear that worse reactions were to come.
Who SHOULD be ultimately blamed is McCarthy, he's the one who pushed the US into this frantic paranoia and fear like noone else in American history.
No, the people who SHOULD ultimately be blamed is the government, who are supposed to have the interests of the people at heart and aren't supposed to fall victim to scare mongering (or in that case, being told exactly what they wanted to hear) or go to war to overthrow foreign governments. Those are the people who decide if war is even an option, and it shouldn't have been. Oh yeah and that whole conscription thing was pretty fucked up too.
wait how was your GRANDFATHER in the vietnam war?
Both preceding generations married young?
Hey asshole, it's called a war that we were never meant to be in. Tell that to my dad, who regrets every single day for ever NOT avoiding the draft. You either did it or you were shot or arrested.
Although you're right, I don't think he was targeting your dad or any other regular soldier. He specifically meant the government. Any war is the same thing be it the Tommy in WW1, or guys like your dad that were drafted in. I've got a degree in military history and psychology, so while I could never call myself an expert (I'd never want to be involved in any sort of armed combat), it would be wrong to say that some didn't let the conflict go to their head. Some US soldiers did some truly awful things, and most (like your father) just wanted to go home. I could say that standing by and watching some of th bloodshed was just as bad, but that would be unjust. The sort of terrain and tactics used were just unimaginable, and completely different from anything the US military had ever undertaken.
In vietnam it was customary in certain circles to cut off the ears of the dead enemies, gouge out their eyes onto their cheeks and place "death cards" onto the corpses.
In vietnam it was customary in certain circles to cut off the ears of the dead enemies, gouge out their eyes onto their cheeks and place "death cards" onto the corpses.
What drug are you on and where can I get some? On another note, my father saw AO take it's effects firsthand, he saw the planes drop that stuff. It was like liquid fire. Also, the reason it was named AO was because it came in these big orange boxes before loaded onto the aircraft. [editline]20th June 2011[/editline]
Both preceding generations married young?
Not only that but many soldiers are now old enough to be grandfathers, my dad is 63 and he was in the war.
In vietnam it was customary in certain circles to cut off the ears of the dead enemies, gouge out their eyes onto their cheeks and place "death cards" onto the corpses.
You're thinking about Tiger Force, also known as, "Out Guriella The Guriella" they pratically went about their days burning down North Vietnamse villages, and killing everyone in them. Why? Because the NVA did the same thing too Pre-American Occupied areas.
wait how was your GRANDFATHER in the vietnam war?
Well, you could do some math in your head to calculate how old someone who served in Vietnam might be now. 1965 (random date between 1955 and 1975) - 20 (possible age when they served in Vietnam) = 1945 (birth date of person) 2011 (current year) - 1945 (the birth date mentioned earlier) = 66 (current age of veteran) And there you go.
