I went to SIGGRAPH a while back and got a better 3rd scan at a booth for free. Granted, my hair was extra poofy so it had trouble with that to be sure.

Yes, many. Primarily in affordability, and materials. Probably the most notable change in recent times is the viability and spread of printers that can print functional metal parts.
