It's not out of the price range for middle class Americans if they really wanted one. Besides I'm gonna assume his argument was "people don't have guns because of restrictions" not "people don't have guns because they're expensive"
middle class americans are not the class of americans most likely to commit violent crime though.

actually it was completely relevant. re-read the posts you were replying to.
THIS! Few years ago a woman dropped her kid off at soccer practice was held at knife point, stabbed 28 times and had her throat slit in front of her kid and he stole the car. He had 5 other counts of carjacking and 1 count attempted murder and 2 counts of rape. He only gets 20 years in prison for this. I would of preferred if she had a loaded .38 and fired all 6 shots into this guys chest and killed him right there she would still be alive, but oh can't do that because "he can be reformed he made a mistake. It doesn't matter he slaughtered her in front of the kid we can help him!"
ok i'm kind of finished with all my normal posts so i just have to ask, what the fuck is it with you gun people and masturbatory listing of features of the weapon you're using. if you said 'I would of preferred if she had a serrated edge hunting knife with bloodletting curves to allow easy stabbing' you'd look like a fucking psycho but apparently stuff like 'mm my .38 flashlight equipped caliber pistol ... s-shoot that criminal r-right on the spot... yeah...' is okay? why do you have to be so specific??? it's fucking creepy
"democracy" is not binary, it is a gradient. you are more democratic than you were in the 1700s but you still have a very authoritarian regime and that can be illustrated with things like the fact that you can be arrested for making naughty comments on facebook. you have internet restrictions and filters. you have a negative right to free speech.
i mean i'm not going to call the uk a totalitarian state but it is certainly authoritarian to a great degree.
The United States also has these exact same problems to a slightly lesser extent?
When it comes to gun ownership I'd rather have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

Seriously, give me a situation where you "need" a gun? Try me.

A guy breaks into your house with a knife.

What's his intention? If it's burglary, just avoid fucking about too much with him, if you know you can't get the drop on him and subdue him, let him take shit and get it replaced on your insurance. Stuff isn't worth a life, and he'll likely get caught giving you a chance at getting shit back.
If it's a purposefully violent encounter, he has a knife. Keep your distance, find other long reach objects and try and subdue him. Try and get him somewhere he's harmless (locked in a room perhaps?).
For both situations, call the local police force ASAP and let them deal with it as best they can. If they don't turn up for 30 minutes, stop living in the third world. During that time, try anything to keep them from harming you (or let them then sue the shit out of them I guess).
I'm not seeing a need for a gun here. Wait, hold on, he's a criminal, clearly not human any more, fuck it just kill him!

I am seeing a whole lot of need for a gun in the "guy with a knife breaks into your house" situation, either to draw him out or stopping him from stabbing you if he decides he'll try and stab me before I shoot him.
But oh, never mind, you think I shouldn't shoot him because his knife isn't as lethal as my gun, so it wouldn't be fair for me to just take his life like that.

I don't care if people die. I don't care that people kill other people with guns. As long as it doesn't affect me or my family, I don't care. Until it does affect me, I won't care. If someone is a criminal, and they are in my house and I consider them a threat to me or my family, they will die. I shoot with my guns to train for killing things. It's a fact of life. You can't go through life being completely naive, thinking that nothing like this can happen you you. Guns in America can't go away. For better or worse, it's part of our culture and there's nothing that can or should be done at this point.
And guess what, the reason I need to do this is because police are unreliable. They aren't preventative, they're there to put you in a body bag after you/your family has been murdered because you don't have adequate defense against an intruder with a weapon that intends to kill you.
People will always kill people. Cops won't be there to protect you. You need to protect yourself. It's human nature. Whether we have a gun, knife, club or any other improvised weapon we will always find a way to end each other. It's a fact of reality.
well, wow. this is the kind of post only someone from the u.s. could make. i'd be embarrassed for you if i wasn't laughing so hard.
Americans are so paranoid it's hilarious. I wonder when they'll realize that their paranoia and xenophobia is actually the cause of a lot of problems in American society.
Oh, Facepunch you never cease to amaze me.

What the fuck dude? Don't generalize. I have my own agenda, just like every other U.S. citizen, and human being for that matter. You're no better than him, except that hopefully you care if somebody dies.
You're all just amazing me even further at this point, and I hope you all feel bad.

Sorry but the murder rate in our country is abysmal compared to other western countries and there's no reason why we should just throw our hands up and say "oh well I guess it's just human nature, everybody go buy a gun."

where else do you find people proudly saying 'THEY WILL DIE' and basically enjoying being completely uncivilised and probably a drain on your community considering he has the audacity to say 'Until it does affect me, I won't care.'
i could literally frame that fucking post and put it up in a museum as a prime example of america's declining society, it's perfect.

hm... *looks back at my previous posts*
*finds nothing aberrant or outright psychopathic*
*shrugs gently*
i dunno, man. i do not know. i think that might be an incorrect thing to say.

No need to be embarrassed for me, I'm currently a Professor at a local college and also studying law enforcement so I can find myself a job in federal law enforcement. I'm probably going to be quite a bit more successful than you can ever hope to be, and I also have a firm grip on reality. So please, don't take pity keyboard warrior, I am content with how my life is going and my view of the world.
The United States also has these exact same problems to a slightly lesser extent?
the united states is not a good comparison to make to any developed nation as far as democracy goes since we can be authoritarian as fuck. in fact, the us is worse in many ways. our elections are a joke, our law enforcement has historically acted like a police state regarding public dissent(and still does to an extent), the nsa spies on us, the tsa molests people.
it's hard to gauge whether the uk or the usa is more or less authoritarian because the uk is authoritarian in ways the usa is not and the usa is authoritarian in ways the uk is not.

um no our paranoia is not hilarious at all, you would understand that if you lived here. it's actually sorta depressing how media makes so much money and government gets so much political capital from our paranoia.

No, it's a representation of what 3/4 of these people who are spewing completely out of touch bullshit think and they try to make themselves feel better about it/distance themselves from reality by posting on an internet forum about how much it pains them that there are people dying every day due to firearms. No one actually cares. If you did, you would be doing more than saying shit on an internet forum.

do you think that becoming a policeman with such charming views as 'I don't care if people die' is a good idea? rhetorical question, it actually is a bad idea unless you want to be a traffic cop or something

this makes no sense. like on a grammatical level i don't understand wtf you are trying to say. i've never had to ask someone to write a post again just so i can comprehend it, but i guess there is a first time for everything

You don't know the shit I see and deal with, my attitude is shared with many law enforcement officers I am friends with and have talked to. The world is fucked up, all I can do is deal with it. It's not going to change.

let me rephrase. I'm sure my view is shared by many others on here that appear to be overly concerned with the condition of the world. But they try to make themselves feel better by pretending to give a fuck on an internet forum. If they actually cared, they would be doing something about it besides posting on an internet forum.

Not you specifically, just Americans in general. The whole "needing a gun for protection" seems to be unique to Americans among western nations.

well I can't say your world view is enviable in like, any way but I guess I dunno who the heck you are IRL so I can't presume anything. guess that's that. just a friendly request though - please try not to shoot people if they don't need to be shot. alright i guess i am outta here

The only circumstance I would ever take a life is if it was 100% necessary to preserve my life, my family's life, or the life of an innocent bystander. Don't get my wrong, I VALUE life, but the fact that people die is something that is inevitable. It will happen, and always will happen. And i'd rather have a criminal die than myself/family/innocent bystanders.
Not you specifically, just Americans in general. The whole "needing a gun for protection" seems to be unique to Americans among western nations.
needing a gun for protection doesn't really perpetuate the paranoia. we feel we need guns for protection because we feel unsafe around our neighbors because our politicians and news anchors spend all their time telling us we need to feel unsafe around our neighbors. people feeling like they need guns is a symptom, not the illness.

You feel like you need a gun to defend yourself because everyone else owns a gun. The gun culture feeds itself.
You feel like you need a gun to defend yourself because everyone else owns a gun. The gun culture feeds itself.
no we feel like we need a gun to protect ourselves because our media tells us that everyone else has a gun and if we don't buy a gun and give our teachers guns our schools will get shot up.
our gun culture is perpetuated through even the "liberal" media because sensationalism sells and corporate executives like money more than they like people.
Jesus Christ, I hope you don't teach anything in the liberal arts.
No, I teach a cad program. I give impoverished minorities the chance to get a decent job and move away from the shithole ghetto they were raised in to make a better life for themselves and their kids. So they don't repeat the same hardships their parents went through.
You feel like you need a gun to defend yourself because everyone else owns a gun. The gun culture feeds itself.
I'd rather like the ability to defend myself with a gun in Canada. Why? Because I can recall at least 10 shootings in 5 years within 5 blocks of me, and if someone threatens my life with a gun, because no matter what laws we have a criminal will get a gun if they want one, just about every police chief in the country admits at least 70% of guns are smuggled into the country, I want to be able to respond with equal force to defend myself. Hell, I'd rather like just being able to defend myself without having to worry about being arrested for it, with a gun or not, because right now I'd be arrested for defending myself no matter what I used.
