Amid Royal Baby Name Wait, Asking if Names Affect Life - Psychologists probe the fascinating ways ou

I would like to name my kids something unique, I don't know it's something about the plan boring everyday names I don't like, like someone in one of my classes was a girl and her name was Liberty (I'm in Canada don't assume American patriotic rednecks) and her brothers name was Julius and that's pretty cool. Some old norse or greek names could be cool as hell as long as you don't pick something dumb.
My first born will be named Odin.
I'm getting a dog named Odin :v:
My name means "The Power of God". Pretty cool, if you ask me.
Hard to write down in most languages, though, and even harder to pronounce without knowing how it sounds.
I got mocked in school for being named Jerry because of Tom N' Jerry
Dexter, I have a lab and I murder people in it.
My name (Bradyn) means 'broad valley'...
My name has something to do with crossroads in French. It's also sleeked with a y, which tries people for a loop.
My name's George, just like this kid. I think names have some kind of effect on people, because I know a lot of people with particular names who have similar characteristics.
What's so special about the name David ):

The problem with "unique" names is that, while they sound cool to you on paper, they turn out to be incredibly stupid for every day life. You would not want to be the only kid in school named Thor. You would not want to write Thor on a job application, because whoever received it would say, "Haha, check it out, this dork is named Thor! What kind of asshole parents did he have?"
Even normal names with "unique" spellings tend to be more annoying than personal. Naming your kid Katie, and spelling it Kaytee will just leave her spelling her name for people over and over again for the rest of her life. Bothersome!
Foreign names are always bitches to work with. My last name is Liu, a last name three letters long. It can only conceivably be spelled one way based on it's pronunciation. It's shared by a famous celebrity and I slowly spell it out every time I know someone's copying it down. Yet every single time, it comes back as Lui.
Hell I've written it down on a form before and it still came back wrong. :v:
Other than that though, people always used to be really interested with both my chinese name and their own chinese name. Not to mention middle names.

Like I said you have to pick the right ones, I would never name my kid a god name like Thor or Odin (that's why the dog is Odin and not Sleipnir :v:) The names I gave for example from my class do not sound bad for everyday life, while Liberty is ok, Julius is kind pretty cool and I can't see problems with a name like that. Also for old norse names the kid would have to be pretty muscular and big as I can't name a kid Halfdan or Ragnarr (just example names) and him being a very skinny guy or something but yeah you just have to choose the right names and not be a total nerd and go "omg I watched Thor once I'm naming my son Loki or Thor or something"
My name is a goddamn hassle when applying for anything since they always spell it fucking wrong. My school, insurance, airports, dmv, etc all spelled it wrong at some point. (My name is Aleksandr) So yeah it impacts me in a minor yet annoying way.
If I ever had a firstborn son that's actually what I wanted to name him. We have this weird thing in my family where all the childrens names start with the letter A, and end with the suffix 'pal' (pronounced paul weird I know) cause that was my Great Grandfathers name
so it'd be like Aleksandrpal Grewal
shit that's a mouthful why am i even thinking of this i need to get a girlfriend first :(

im naming my potential first born son after you i hope ur happy
Ryan, "Little King" O'Connor, descendant of Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair, last high king of Ireland. Ironically overthrown by the Norquists, which is my mom's side of the family
such great history! BOW TO ME, FOR I AM KING OF talking angrily at troublemakers on an internet forum
I think nature, nurture, and environment have waaay more control than your name does though, but I've seen some mixed results. Ryan was a popular baby name when I was born so I've met a good number, though through school every other one was your generic popular sports jock type, whereas I was the quiet 'smart' dude who spent time reading up on programs and doodling.
Sure I've seen major trends around names, but I've seen complete opposites. A lot of people can kind of place a stereotype, like "You look more like a 'Kyle'", so maybe there's something in it, but the name could be a secondary trait- the parents are a certain way and agreed on a name for you, which means their personalities that end up seeping into you as you form into a person have a huge impact on who you become. If they expect someone that would 'totally be a Kyle', they'll treat you and expect you to act like one, if that makes a (weird) kinda sense.
Other factors can play in as well, notably extremely uncommon names, both plus and minus. There's cultural significance behind many interesting names, but a red headed kid named "Ubuntu" (by overzealous nerd parents or whatever) in the middle of a bunch of more commonly named kids is going to raise a few eyebrows in the very least, and he'll be constantly asked about the name, if not harassed for being weird. Most kids in this situation adopt a nickname, be it initials, their middle name if it's better, or a side-step (Ubuntu might take on bob or something since it's at least similar).
also people naming their girls after various car brands (I've met a Porche and heard a few others) is just setting them up for guys making crude "I'd like to take that for a ride" commentary, it's awful

<3 I feel honored to have inspired the names of your (potential)children.

My surname has both sch [ʃ] and ch [ç], in the same syllable, and is very uncommon, which means two things:
1. A lot of people can't pronounce it correctly, because their dialect has either only [ʃ] or [ç] (or they pronounce ch as [k] for some reason) and
2. I always have to spell it. It's fun though, because it's 3 times 3 characters in common groups :v:
My first name isn't really that uncommon, the region where it (and I) come from is just very small. It sounds completely normal but most people I meet have never heard it.
They also often ask for the spelling even though almost no-one gets it wrong :v:
It's also a good conversation hook and easily remembered, as well as describing me pretty well despite the not apparent meaning. I really like it!

[del]"God is my judge"[/del]
wait that's daniel nvm
My name apparently means "Pure"
But since it's the American spelling, that threw all that out of the fucking window! :v::v::v:
My name apparently means "Friend to many" in indian or some shit.
Funny as hell considering I'm half Russian half German.
Even more hilarious is the fact that I'm practically a shut in.
My name just means "Tile Maker".
my name is limbert
idk what to think of it
