I'd much rather LoL esports become more mainstream than shit like CoD, didn't CoD get featured as a "sport" in the X-games? To me, CoD is a much more toxic game/community than LoL. I wouldn't mind seeing Gears series become a larger e-sport scene, but it's popularity never lasts more than a few years at best after it's latest release and Epic doesn't seems to want to bring it to more platforms than Xbox which is a damn shame.

Yeah surprisingly you don't see that every game. The non-cod players are much more toxic tbh, especially a few years ago they'd just go on and on about how bad it is.
If you can survive the shit community, you've probably earned it.
If you play with a few of your friends then it's all fine, though I prefer dota 2.

I'd much rather see CS:GO, or a fighting game take the spot. And if they are going to do an ASSFAGGOT game, at least use dota
I don't get why LoL is like, the only established eSport. The game is boring as fuck, especially to watch, and the community is the most toxic on the Internet.
The problem with e-sports, in my opinion, is that the rules change too frequently. Hockey will always be hockey, football will always be football, but most video games have patches that change everything every few months. You could never realistically get people to casually pay attention because they would involve learning the existing rules, and then learning about all the changes since last season. Watching from season to season would be a disaster, the majority of people interested in watching are those who actively play or have played somewhat recently. This really limits potential viewership. Plus video games have pretty poor longevitiy. There are a few games that have lasted a while, but I don't see LoL or Dota 2 being the number #1 esport in 10 years time. I mean it's a cool idea to have e-sport scholarships but in a few years the major esport will change and everyone will forget about LoL.
have you watched any cod tourneys compared to lol tourneys? [editline]23rd June 2014[/editline] csgo still has shit hitreg and good luck finding a fighting game that everyone can agree on being an esport
Just have tourneys for csgo with 128 tick servers, that should help a lot. And well they were able to decide to choose LoL over dota so they shouldn't have too hard a time deciding
The problem with e-sports, in my opinion, is that the rules change too frequently.
Well considering dota has been around and going strong for a very good number of years I'd say it would be the best candidate for a long lasting esport
Yeah but it used to be a mod of a popular game ran by a small number of people (namely icefrog) now it's run by a large corporation who continues to add content and change the game very rapidly. At least, that was the case before I quit. Do you think dota 2 will be the most popular steam game in 10 years? 20 years? That's like 2-5ish olympics we're talking about. If you want to hold real championships the game needs proven longevity. We've seen a lot of games rise and fall, just because there are some people playing them doesn't mean they are remotely as popular as they once were.

The game has always been getting new heroes and patches since the start, that part hasn't really changed much.

Football has been popular for so long, whereas the original dota was an underground mod, and Dota 2 is just starting to become extremely popular.
I dunno, dota has already been around for over 10 years and is still extremely popular, so I'm pretty sure it has longevity [editline]23rd June 2014[/editline] And naw WC3 dota was pretty popular all things considered
Do dota fans really have to complain that it's league that's getting this? I'm sure it'll be recognized the same way eventually, this is just a step in the right direction
Do dota fans really have to complain that it's league that's getting this? I'm sure it'll be recognized the same way eventually, this is just a step in the right direction
I'm not really complaining, it is just a really weird thing to be chosen first. It would be like if they had made the bughouse variant of chess a sport before chess itself. Not a bad thing, just weird
imagine how much hell they would get for a counter strike scholarship [editline]23rd June 2014[/editline] SCHOOL SUPPORTING SCHOOL SHOOTING TRAINERS: MORE AT 11

Not a bad thing, just weird
It's not really weird at all, league of legends is so popular that just streaming the championships takes a massive portion of north america's total bandwidth. Dota is not a "superior" game to LoL no matter how much you like the former, it's just different. I started off playing dota as a warcraft mod with some other kids in my neighborhood and I think it's a great game too, I just wish certain fans of both could stop shit flinging because they feel like theirs is #1. There's room for 2 games in a single genre v:v:v

I just likened it to bughouse vs chess because that's how the games feel, LoL is more fast paced where you need more individual skill while dota is more like normal chess where the gameplay is a lot more focused on being able to outsmart your opponent rather than out skill them.
hopefully colleges are successful with this. 3rd party league tournaments in NA are basically dead thanks to riot
TBH I don't think it's so ridiculous for e-sports to be treated like real sports, I mean they require a high level of skill, strategy, and (depending) teamwork just like a physical sport. The only real difference is the lack of physical ability required, aside from reaction times
I think that most important factor here is that they create advertisement for the school.
Never did I imagine that games would be a competitive sport. Nor did I imagine LoL would grow to be so massive
Do dota fans really have to complain that it's league that's getting this? I'm sure it'll be recognized the same way eventually, this is just a step in the right direction
Since they're taking baby steps, I guess it fits with doing the baby dota first :v:
point me to the thread where dota fans don't get mad at league
Well, it's definitely not this one, the shit posting is milder than usual but still there:
Since they're taking baby steps, I guess it fits with doing the baby dota first :v:

I don't get why LoL is like, the only established eSport. They don't all get as many viewers as LoL, but they're established all the same. Dota 2 is growing, CS:GO is growing, I don't know much about fighting games but they're pretty well established. Then there's Starcraft, which is staying strong after 15 years of being an esport.
