If sympathy was the reason for our support of Israel, I don't think they'd have our support any more. They basically went "Hey, hang on! We can do that stuff people did to us now!"

No it wasn't, it was because the US stopped their oil exports to them. They were heavily dependent on that oil to grow as an empire and they wanted to expand into Asia. The US threatened to intervene if they tried to do just that, so the Japanese decided to try a knock-out punch by bombing our fleet in Pearl Harbor.
