For being post-converted to 3D, it was damn good. It's nowhere near as good as Avatar's implementation, but still one of the better attempts I've seen in no small part due to its subtlety.
Here's the upsides of that release:
The water. The boat looked big. That's all.
Dangling actors and silly things hanging off, is not my idea of an enhancing experience. I felt so good I didn't pay for the ticket myself...
3D often isn't worth the €2,50 extra. I still see them in 3D every time, hopeful, waiting.
I wish I'd seen Hugo in 3D. Apparently it's the only film where both it and the filming in 3D worked hand in hand.
Avatar is nothing without the 3D glow.

I might be in the minority on this but I enjoyed Avatar's Blu-Ray release more than I did the 3D showing.
Then again, it seems I'm in the minority here who legitimately likes that movie :v:
Avatar had a very unoriginal plot, but the 3D looked very nice.
The HFR version of The Hobbit in 3D looked properly good.
It was the first film I had ever watched 3D on, and it was a new experience to watch in 48 FPS.
The 3D felt subtle and I barely thought about it at all, the 48 FPS though was amazing, it felt so smooth. I loved it and can't for the life of me see why anyone would have anything negative to say about 48 FPS.
Last time I said Avatar was a great movie, Facepunch hanged me in the nearest lightpost.
Lets see what you think about the movie now:

well it made the CGI stand the fuck out
I don't think the 'It hurts my eyes' is a valid argument. If it hurts your eyes, there are always non-3D showings.
The thing is, 3d generally impacts 2d showings as well. Colour depth, dof and a lot of other stuff is built differently.
well it made the CGI stand the fuck out
And small details such as make-up and it made the whole thing feel much more like you were going to the theatre - yeah there are still things that need to catch up, but I definitely enjoyed it much more than I would have had I seen it in 2D.
And honestly I personally think they used a little too much CGI in The Hobbit than should have been necessary :v:

Yeah, that's what really throws me off about 48fps; it feels more like looking at actors on a set than it does looking at characters in a separate world. Maybe it's just a question of adaptation, but that "cinematic" feel somewhat disappears.

I definitely think it's an adaption thing, from the start I felt I was looking at real people just as if on stage, and in the beginning it felt like they were actors but after a few minutes I was more immersed than I have ever been by a film :v:
[editline]9th July 2013[/editline]
I definitely think higher framerates are the future.
[editline]9th July 2013[/editline]
Isn't the next Avatar films gonna be in 48 fps aswell?
And this is why 3D is on it's way out in the US, people recognize that it's just a stupid gimmick to tack on $5 to our already inflated ticket price. Whoopee, I spent more money to watch Ghost Rider's head pop out of the screen like it's IMAX in the early 90s again. The WORST thing is to watch a movie in regular 2D and see the pointless, gratuitous shots they throw in as an excuse to poke shit out of the screen. Ugh.
But, they keep applying the same shitty conversion process to every $100 million plus tentpole movie because Chinese audiences eat that shit up.

in imax 3d avatar is incredible.
just 3d is a good movie
in regular format it's not great
Higher framerates and 3D is fucking gross and I hope they both die in a fire.
I thought Coraline did 3d pretty well
i've never seen Avatar.
FUCK that 3D shit, all it does is make the colours dampen and my eyes hurt.

There's usually always a guy who says "Facepunch is not a hive mind" whenever a post like this comes up.
I haven't seen that post yet, he must be out sick or something
Exactly this
its not even 3D unless its a HOLODECK because that's exactly what "3D" is. You know, three dimensions. Not pseudo 3d through gimmicky glasses

I don't care if they further the technology or not really. It's a giant gimmick all the way. Unless its a holodeck, its not "3D", thats a lie. Avatar, despite having no real plot, is the exception.
i feel like you're a massive trek nerd who's super buttmad over the term 3D.
like seriously 3D as it is now is just that, 3d. It's providing a sense of depth to what was before a strictly flat medium.
i really liked The Hobbit in 3D, and Dredd was a fucking masterpiece

nah. avatar is a boring movie that has a plot that's been done a thousand times, that relies too much on action and the 3d gimmick which serves the movie no real purpose. people want good stories, not special effects demos. which is what avatar was. it was 'look at how nice this cgi is, look how nice the 3d is'. which did nothing for me at all. and considering the plot was a rehash of a billion movies namely the fast and the furious and pocahontas, it was just a really dull experience.
go back and make another movie like terminator 2. with practical effects and no 3d.
nah I totally love when movie directors have that part where the thing's coming straight at me! woah guys did you see that it's like it was COMING RIGHT AT US XD
3D needs to go away until people can use it correctly.

Deciding what people want is a bold statement, considering Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time.

I just don't feel it with 3d. I already feel like its good enough without it, so it doesn't even really "Add" much for me enough.
it makes it feel like an honest gimmick. ESPECIALLY when commercials act as if its true 3d and the actions POPPING OUT RIGHT IN YOUR FACE boom yeah! When the only time you'd actually get that is in a holodeck, but thats what they act as if the glasses will do. It's such a lie.

Tell me, does this happen when you watch anything in 3D? I remember a bunch of other commercials for movies as well, including a horror movie that showed an axe/knife flying out of the theaters screen at people.
I mean, I liked it in avatar, but the gimmick comes from the fact that it isn't that big of a deal and just feels overrated. What's wrong with movies as they are today? Why do they also have to exaggerate what the word "3D" means? yes its more 3d than 2d, but Jesus.
[editline]9th July 2013[/editline]
I really want to care about 3D, but lets face it, it feels like a gimmick to get money out of you. 3D TV's are overpriced for something that isn't going to change that much. I'd rather we had different methods or rather wait until the current technology improved. As of now, it just isn't worth it for me, and I feel as if its just some kind of fad that's going to die out with something 'better'.
[sp]and I was using the holodeck as the next best example... Liking of Star Trek is quite irrelevant. IMHO, that's the only true 3D you can get[/sp]

It doesn't matter whether your brains merely perceive it to be 3d or whether it's physically three-dimensional, the end result appears the same.
The only movies that do that are movies meant for children. Case and point, Jackass 3D.
im sorry but jackass 3d showcased the finest 3d cinema has to offer.
the censor bar scene is a fine example
...There were no Censor bars. :|
I watched Avatar in 3D twice when it came out, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not as bad as people like to say it is.
