I hate how 3D is always tacked on lazily to get more sales. Films don't focus full out on the 3d (with the exception of Avatar and maybe The Hobbit), but it's just "REALLY SHITTY BADLY HYPED MOVIE - IN 3D!!!!!! which just uses it for "woah maaaann look at these jumps"
-snip-
all the 3D in Avatar was masterfully done, and really only used for depth of field enhancement.
The only depth the film ever had.
Wasn't there a study showing that in 3D movies you tend to focus on 'whoa this 3d stuff is cool' rather than the story itself? I've certainly noticed that while watching 3d movies, I always find 2d more memorable :v:
I find mostly animated films loom better in 3D best ones have seen / own are avatar, the hobbit, puss in boots and monsters inc. Some of the other films I have I am like "why?"
The only thing I see in 3D movies was the subtitles popping out of the screen. Other than that I think Life Of Pi was great in 3D.
3D is nice when it's used sparsely and mostly for "depth" instead of "popping out." 3D usually gives me headaches, so the last 3D movie I saw was Rise of the Guardians. It was hardly noticeable, but I knew it was there because the foreground was distinct from the background and it looked really fucking nice. It's the same idea when you turn the 3D all the way up on the 3DS - it should be subtle. 3D isn't inherently bad, but it can become gimmicky very, very quickly.
3d is inherently bad until glassesless 3d becomes standard because wearing glasses over glasses is awful and whoever thought up 3d glasses is a monster
the most amazing 3D ive seen used was in the adventures of tin-tin, it was so fucking magnificent with all the depth it gave, few movies will ever come close to the quality of it and im sad ill never get to see it with the 3D ever again like that :(
I don't think the 'It hurts my eyes' is a valid argument. If it hurts your eyes, there are always non-3D showings.
These days some 3D movies don't have 2D showings.
that madagascar film with the seal in it was shite
I saw a movie in 3D once and I'll never do it again. Wearing 3D glasses over my normal glasses was extremely uncomfortable and they made everything look dark and shitty.
Another bad example is how they knew the second GI Joe movie was already shit, so they delayed it by a year to tack on 3D. Not sure if that worked out well for them, but even if it ended up working in their favor, its an insult to movie goers to tack on 3D hoping they ignore how shit your movie is because "ohhh!!! 3D!!!". I mean, come on. While it was a complete pile of shit that I only saw due to visiting my cousins, the people who made Marmaduke at least had the integrity to NOT release it in 3D. They knew they had a stinker, yet chose to stink with dignity rather than tack on 3D to lure in drooling idiots.
