beat me to it you fucker
I understand that it's kind of a gross overreaction from the christian community but I'm really not digging the 'oh look at us we're such poor victims' routine AA is taking.
It's like continuously poking someone until he starts screaming at you and going 'hey man calm down'.
It's like continuously poking someone until he starts screaming at you and going 'hey man calm down'.
it isn't anything like that. that is invading personal space and you can probably get done for harassment if you didn't ever let up
[editline]24th August 2012[/editline]
plus "stop poking me" =/= "I hope your children are raped by a herd of niggers"
except for the TED talk in which Richard Dawkins advocates "militant atheism" specifically
so no not at all
Richard Dawkins invented the word?
Also, does Richard Dawkins 100% speak for every atheist in existence today?
What an annoying embarrassment to Christians.
The word militant is deceitful because it paints a comparison between militant atheists and militant christians, one of which is arguably obnoxious, and the other, which murders people.
Also, does Richard Dawkins 100% speak for every atheist in existence today?
did I imply that
did I imply that
You either implied that, or implied that Richard Dawkins invented the term "militant atheist".
Both implications are false.
You either implied that, or implied that Richard Dawkins invented the term "militant atheist".

YOU'RE false
I didn't actually imply either
I didn't actually imply either
Then why were you replying to someone who said that the term was invented by fundamentalists, then tried to refute that by saying Richard Dawkins advocated the term at a TED Talk?
What were you trying to convey?

what does it matter who invented it if it's been self-applied by a prominent spokesperson for atheism? who cares who made it up if it describes accurately what atheists want to do?
I can kind of see how you think I implied that he invented the term, but my real questions are how do you know who invented it and can you cite a source, and how in the world do you infer that I think Richard Dawkins speaks for all atheists from what I said
[editline]24th August 2012[/editline]
My point originally was even if the term was "made up," initially by fundamentalists, someone like Dawkins saying, "Hey yes, this term is actually accurate and I want to self-apply it," legitimizes it. It's no longer a derogatory term that the fundamentalists invented to throw at us, some subset of atheists think it accurately describes what they do
Yeah, they're in the wrong. Not the atheists, but the people against this billboard. Free speech, how does it work.

you don't have to like what someone says simply because it's free speech, but you're not allowed to threaten to kill them either

Fair enough for me.
I don't think the term is illegitimate, only that it's stupid. I also don't particularly care who invented it, only that the connotations and comparisons it triggers.
Gotta love extremism!
I'd like to apologize for everyone here of the Protestant faith, most of us don't do this, but one bad apple ruins the bunch, and these assholes had to do it for us.

Gotta agree with you here. Dawkins doesn't speak for me on this issue - we are neither militant nor at war until we advocate physical violence as a means to an end to religion
Yyeeeeah. Both sides are chock full of nuts.
The Militant Atheists put of idiotic signs, the Overzelous Religious guys make death threats, it's all very much the pot calling the kettle black.

in every single thread like this, there are people that condescendingly say "atheists are just as bad as theists" and sit there smugly as if they're now superior to the quarreling parties. rarely is there any justification given, and if there is it's just pattern-matching of surface similarities like how people think electrons literally orbit nuclei because that's what planets do around stars.
there's a qualitative difference between outspoken atheists and outspoken theists. I wouldn't invite the former to a dinner party, I wouldn't invite the latter to a funeral.
and on the third side, we have the elf rape enthusiasts, whom are far superior to all

Those kind of billboards would be some fresh air for the neighbourhood.
I personally am not a fan of those billboards.
BUT THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO RESPOND.
I mean, complaints are one thing, complaints don't hurt anyone.
But fucking death threats?
Every single time some stupid shit like this happens, it makes us normal sane Christians look bad.
But then the most vocal and well-known part of a group is usually the stupidest and loudest.
Note: [sp]I have tried to word this as delicately as possible so as not to incite a shitstorm. All I ask is that you please PLEASE do not associate these people with your average Christian. To do so would be like associating the "Lol, you believe in God? What a faggot, lawl, flying spaghetti monster xD" crowd with Athiesm.[/sp]
what does it matter who invented it if it's been self-applied by a prominent spokesperson for atheism? who cares who made it up if it describes accurately what atheists want to do?
Did you seriously just pretend that was a valid argument for anything? That'd also validate calling homosexuals faggots.
"Of course they're faggots, that famous faggot says they're faggots and that accurately describes their faggotry."

Um.
how do you know who invented it and can you cite a source
Well you could implement a smidge of common sense and realize that being aggressively without a thing is an absurd concept (I am aggressively not holding a fish taco), and thus assume the term came from silly people sticking "militant" onto "thing I am afraid of".
But going into detail, the term "militant" wasn't even used as a descriptor for political behavior until 1907, and the earliest citations you can find of "militant atheism" will be religious men telling you why "militant atheists" are silly or don't actually exist and why you don't need to shit your pants about your kids liking this newfangled [del]rap music[/del] science crap. It was later solidified by a Russian organization calling itself that and western reactions to them and the Communist thang on the whole.
What an annoying embarrassment to Christians.
Accidentally rated you disagree.
These kind of Christians piss me off and make all Christians look bad.
Yeah, who's the shitty, militant, intolerant ones now?
Yeah, who's the shitty, militant, intolerant ones now?
Both sides have their lunatics.
Both sides have their lunatics.
I've never seen nor heard of an atheist tell a Christian that they hope their children get their "throats slit by niggers" before.
Has an atheist ever burned down a church or anything like that, out of "militant atheism"? I've never heard of anything like that.
I've never seen nor heard of an atheist tell a Christian that they hope their children get their "throats slit by niggers" before.
it's probably happened, but the key thing is it's probably almost never been motivated by the christian stepping on the atheist's beliefs
like, I can't imagine someone flipping out and calling for death because someone said Dawkins was an arrogant fuckface. I just can't imagine it, that is totally inconceivable to me

The thing is, these people aren't "Christians making death threats because they're Christian".
They're fucking lunatics who happen to be Christian making death threats because they're fucking lunatics.
If they weren't Christians, they'd STILL be fucking lunatics.
Being a Christian doesn't automatically make someone a backwards racist homophobic lunatic, just like how being an Athiest doesn't automatically make someone a Godless cross-burning baby-eating hellspawn.
