Exactly. Neil DeGrasse Tyson had some interesting thoughts on human intelligence, not entirely relevant to Singularity but still relevant to the discussion: (Paraphrasing) We are 2% genetically different from chimpanzees. In that two-percent is the difference between the smartest members of the species learning basic, limited sign language and building the Hubble Telescope. Most people think that is a huge difference, but what if it isn't? To us, that 2% difference is far enough to look down at monkeys as cute little animals. What would we look like, exactly, to a lifeform that is 2% different from us in the same direction that we are different from chimps? What if our accomplishments thus far are not all that extraordinary, and what if the science and mathematics people spend their lives learning today were completely intuitive to something else from birth? We would look like morons.
chimpanzees are still around. who's to say humanity won't split apart, with the ubermenschen putting the rest of us in zoos :tinfoil: [editline]11th September 2011[/editline]
Electronics are cheap and only get cheaper, and you don't need to amputate anything, it's much simpler to implant extra things than it is replace parts.
actually that trend won't continue for long. electronics need small but significant amounts of rare elements, the supplies of which are either running out or controlled almost exclusively by china, who is considering limiting exports.
Arms aswell?
Arms as well as what? I don't know what you're getting at here.
Arms as well as what? I don't know what you're getting at here.
He's asking how you will get augmented arms without amputating the old ones.
Arms aswell?
do you mean arms as in what you use to pick things up or arms as in what you shoot people with
chimpanzees are still around. who's to say humanity won't split apart, with the ubermenschen putting the rest of us in zoos :tinfoil:
Well technically we didn't evolve from chimps, we evolved alongside them. The hominid species already split several times (namely the neanderthals), and Humanity either fucked them Human (interbred until they disappeared) or wiped them out thousands of years ago. There might be another schism, but on a purely biological level there isn't enough competition to split our species again. There may be a schism between purists and post-humans. The purists won't last very long.
I just hope I don't have to be part of some sort of global collective consciousness , it's loud enough in my head as it is.
I just hope I don't have to be part of some sort of global collective consciousness , it's loud enough in my head as it is.
You're already a collective consciousness. You are the culmination of billions of brain cells communicating with quadrillions of other tissue cells, each an individual acting toward unified goals. Your mind is a parliament of conflicting needs, desires, hopes and fears. Though you do not perceive the internal debates, your body is constantly arguing with itself over whether it wants to eat, shit, fuck, move, rest, observe or interact. You only ever notice the part that wins the argument. Being part of a collective isn't all that different from how you live right now, only on a larger scale. [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] Also sometimes your body faces terrorist insurgents in the form of cancer, to keep this metaphor rolling. [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] And when you shit yourself, that's like a filibuster
Organ failure is strike action, then? :v:
Organ failure is strike action, then? :v:
yeah sometimes your liver unionizes and demands a more manageable workload. Also your kidneys want benefits. Both those fuckers drag Epidermis into it so then you've got yellow skin save for a few scabs. [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] haha get it, scabs.
He's asking how you will get augmented arms without amputating the old ones.
Maybe he's talking about just adding machines to his arms meaning he gets to keep the ones he has but improved or getting a few extra robot arms on different parts of his body to become some type of insect like man. Appendicitis is an economic meltdown.
Appendicitis is an economic meltdown.
amputation is like secessionists
Maybe he's talking about just adding machines to his arms meaning he gets to keep the ones he has but improved or getting a few extra robot arms on different parts of his body to become some type of insect like man.
That would be pretty cool, but would probably require some kind of weight distribution system like a reinforced skeleton, as you would for replacement arms of any real strength.
amputation is like secessionists
No, it'd be secession only if that limb cut itself off of the body.
No, it'd be secession only if that limb cut itself off of the body.
So then its annexation.
So then its annexation.
No that would be like if you cut the arm off of someone else and then sewed it on to your ribcage so you look like piderman
No that would be like if you cut the arm off of someone else and then sewed it on to your ribcage so you look like piderman
Transplants are annexation then.
He's asking how you will get augmented arms without amputating the old ones.
And how much would some actually good prosthesis cost? Not those that almost takes telekinesis to move 1 finger, I'm talking actually good ones, that you would use in a job. And as DainBramage said, resources aren't that famous. [editline]12th September 2011[/editline]
do you mean arms as in what you use to pick things up or arms as in what you shoot people with
Pick up things. Also, semantics war above. Its even more confusing then the whole trans-humanism thing.

But keep in mind prosthetics aren't going to be anything near cost effective compared to implanted technologies, assuming you already have arms.
And how much would some actually good prosthesis cost?
One insurance.
One insurance.
I don't think any health insurer is going to pay for anything you don't need, I'd imagine socialised healthcare systems might subsidise the operation needed but it's going to very expensive to have a limb voluntarily removed and replaced.
I don't think any health insurer is going to pay for anything you don't need, I'd imagine socialised healthcare systems might subsidise the operation needed but it's going to very expensive to have a limb voluntarily removed and replaced.
Insurance usually covers prosthetic limbs. You need a legs and arms.
Insurance usually covers prosthetic limbs.
machines aren't yet capable of truly abstract thought
true
and I really doubt they ever will be
unreasonable assumption
I'm interested in the idea of how we'd change our brains. Imagine we made it so we could have a HUD :v:
also is it just me, or can you always tell a writer knows nothing about a subject when they put a hyphen in places that don't need one "trans-humanism"
Rape is annexation.
Rape is annexation.
no thats more like eminent domain
