Considering that manufacturing and fabrication are getting cheaper and cheaper, by my calculations the future cost of a high end prosthetic limb would be fuck if I know.
I think the surgery to replace your limbs would be a major part of the costs, and besides, glasses probably costs 5 cents in materials, and lot how much they cost.
I haven't a fucking clue what it'd cost, to be honest, but they'll get better and they'll get cheaper, as all consumer market electronics do. But keep in mind prosthetics aren't going to be anything near cost effective compared to implanted technologies, assuming you already have arms.
I'm not laughing on the outside. But I'm laughing alot on the inside. I dunno why, but this talk about arms cracks me up. [editline]12th September 2011[/editline]
I'm interested in the idea of how we'd change our brains. Imagine we made it so we could have a HUD :v:
Actually... I would like to have that. Complete with targeting and IDing system.

Another cool feature would being able to pull up something like a web browser on your HUD.
So is throwing up like deportation?
So is throwing up like deportation?
Of the illegal-immigrant symbiotic bacteria in your stomach, yes. Artificial augmentations don't change your genetic code so the only way they can cause a genetic split in humanity is if augmented people and unaugmented people don't interbreed. Genetic modifications though will obviously do something but the purists may have an idea in avoiding them if they have some nasty consequences we didn't plan for, only in the case of genetic modifications being unrestricted though. Also the 2% difference between humans and chimps is only valid because it's an important 2%. The numbers mean nothing, it's about the content of the difference. Think of your DNA like a hard drive, if you fill up a few gigabytes with every episode of My Little Pony, it's not going to be as important as if you used that space for nuclear missile launch codes. Changing humans 2% isn't going to do jack shit unless it's an important part that will create an obvious distinction between the two.
Listen I don't give a fuck, if the military busts out a super soldier program where you have to volunteer to get augmented to fuck, I am so signing up for that shit. Who gives a shit about pussy when you look like this: Besides by this stage if you even have base desires left, you can probably just run a VR program to satisfy your sexual needs. BRB running my little pony VR file 002
no thats more like eminent domain
Only in states with rather strict Sharia law, most rapists don't provide just compensation. Oh wait most governments don't either, touche.
All I know is that we're bound to hit huge problems with this stuff. No one of us is an actual scientist to say that this is only good/only bad/good and bad and there might be lots of things we don't know about it. What I am sort of sure is that the ammount of people here who'd rather be a robot instead of what they are is rather alarming. Love yo'selves people :smith:
We hit problems with anything, then we fix them, that's how making shit works. And how do you know that some of us aren't scientists? And why does someone that can't even spell "amount" care what I do with my body? I strive to be better, if you haven't noticed, we have a need to evolve, the planet is dying, we need to find another place to live, and if we can't live there(For example mars, since it has water now apparently) we need to force evolution to let us live there, by changing our biochemistry, terraforming, etc. And one thing you're missing, for example, digitizing brains, imagine where we would be if minds like Da Vinci, Einstein, Tesla, Sagan, etc could be preserved. Rather than getting held back by religion and politicians(Which are usually affected by religion)
I'm surprised even two people got that joke. Poly-Sci 102 graduates?
more like google and wikipedia users
There will eventually be a hivemind, somewhere.
Well, that's their choice to make; if they want their ultimate unity then I can't stop them. I wouldn't be hostile toward a hive mind; I just don't want to be a part of one, and I don't necessarily want people I care about to join said hivemind as I would technically lose them to the singular amalgamated mishmash of minds. Even if every human on Earth joined the hive mind of their own volition, i'd still stay out of it. I value my sense of self and individuality far more than any "higher purpose" or "blessed unity". Besides, they probably wouldn't want an unwilling subject incorporated into the hive; it'd probably cause instability of some sort...
more like google and wikipedia users
Or anyone who's played L.A. Noire. I wasn't aware this was such an obscure concept.
Or anyone who's played L.A. Noire. I wasn't aware this was such an obscure concept.
it's not so much an obscure concept as a US-exclusive term
it's not so much an obscure concept as a US-exclusive term
True, but it's not like we can avoid America's cultural spillage nowadays anyway [anyway is an Americanism].

I don't need to worry about some random person on the internet who complains just because I gave an extra letter to a word, despite not being my first language. It has everything to do with the matter at hands right? Good luck getting to mars. We wont even be thinking about making a shack for a dollar there, let alone be able to live there for extended periods of time.
I don't think any health insurer is going to pay for anything you don't need
Your work insurance will if your employer decides you should be augmented at company expense, which will happen.
If you think augmentation necessarily entails losing emotions and becoming a cyber-zombie, you've been watching too much sci-fi.
I never did. I'm just stating my opinion on the parts of the article mentioning the strive for immortality and of those wanting to remove parts of the emotions cause they find them inconvenient. Smaller, unobtrusive things would be ok. I still wouldn't take part in them myself, though. And there really should be a reply notification system implemented on this forum. not the completely useless subscription option.

If you're gonna make excuses, at least make excuses for the right things, you didn't listen to your teacher, or the teacher was an imbecile, either way, it has nothing to do with you learning Portuguese or whatever the fuck first. Oh, and just because I might not live to see it, I'm still gonna fucking work on making the human race survive, I know it will probably take around 100-150 years before we colonize other planets, even though we have the technology to do so, but humans are such stupid little beings, hence why I aim to be something more, to save them from their own, self-destructive stupidity. We waste so much money on stupid wars where we don't gain anything, we throw valuable materials at each other, wasting them over religious squabbles, while we could just go fuck it and try to save this god forsaken planet since you're destroying what you're trying to conquer, or rather, start anew on another planet.
