Why would you choose a real eye when you could have a bitchin' visor like Geordi
Because Geordi's visor doesn't let him see light in the normal visible wavelength. Infrared's fine, and so is ultraviolet, but for some reason they can't do visible light v:v:v [editline]10th September 2011[/editline]
There are a lot of organization trying to advocate that type of system. One of the reasons I love seeing technology advance is because as soon as labor can be taken by machines humans will be free to do whatever they want.
What if they want to work?

I'm all for this kind of thing, unless we go back to living like apes and abandon technology, evolution and natural selection aren't going to carry the species any further. I'm just hoping resistance and chaos about trans-humanism won't be quite as bad as Human Revolution depicted. We need less Purity First dicks and more David Sarifs. [sp]ADAAAAM, SON, I THOUGHT YOU WERE READY TO READ THIS IN MY VOICE[/sp]
I'm fine with trans-humanism as long as they don't fuck up two things: Free thought Our ability to reproduce naturally Other than that I honestly don't see how anyone could be against it if those two things were kept intact. Let's say there's some cataclysmic event and we're forced to hunga bunga with sticks and shit for a few hundred years before technology is rediscovered. Well, if we're allowed to think freely and reproduce naturally, everything will be A-OK! Nothing of value was lost! Who knows, we could have supremely biologically enhanced humans who pass this on to their children, effectively destroying that "trans-human" thing completely. It would be the de facto state, kept alive through natural breeding. Hell, even without a cataclysmic event we could try to get a chick with night vision and a guy with super reflexes to get busy and have ninja babies.
Everything you do impacts how your brain processes information, and there will never be a cataclysmic event that somehow magically destroys advanced technology but not the overwhelming majority of humanity. That's just silly.
thing is, not all cultures share the view that individualism is important there will eventually be a hivemind, somewhere.
Other cultures don't value individualism as much we do, but I bet you not even 5% of them would want to be part of a hive mind. That's like saying since westerners value self-sacrifice less, that most of them would sell their own mothers.
I want robot arms, does that make me a bad person?
I want robot arms, does that make me a bad person?
OBVIOUSLY YOU GOD HATING PSYCHOPATH! GO TAKE YOUR HIVE MIND ELSEWHERE! [sp]No.[/sp]
I never really understood the reasoning for anti-aug hate in deus ex either I don't see a problem with it from a religious standpoint but that seemed to be the main argument against it you could get roped in and go broke because of having to buy the medicine stuff but 1. it's almost always a choice 2. if you lost limbs in an accident and couldn't afford nano-aug prosthetics why not just get mechanical ones 3. doubt we'd need medicine stuff if we ever came through with robot arms in real life

It frequently wasn't consensual, and left people dependent on a very expensive drug for the rest of their lives. Many people also lost their jobs to augmented workers. There was that woman in Heng Sha who studied hard and came in at the top of her class in college, and yet couldn't compete with augmented people doing the same job.
oh yeah, I never finished the game got to the very beginning of china and said "fuck learning the new map layout" I should probably start playing it again but what do you mean it wasn't usually consensual? I know jensen had that part in his contract that said "we reserve the right to give you robot arms" but I doubt a company would put that part in someone's contract if they wouldn't pay for the medicine for it, that'd probably be made illegal in real life anyways wouldn't non-discrimination policies cover augmentation too? I mean I'd understand if something like a construction company wanted workers that could lift shit better than others but what was that one lady's job you're talking about? if it's something like a desk job I'd expect a pretty much equal amount of kinds of people working it
Trans-humanism is probably going to be monopolized by the rich and regulated so it is made inaccessible to the common man. Calling it now.
We can always destroy the economy.

That lady couldn't do her job as well as people who had a social augment that allowed them to better understand their clients.

oh yeah the prostitutes had them forced onto them but p sure that'd be illegal gotta crack some eggs to make an omelette, if getting my robot arms means someone somewhere is going to be forced to get a robo-cooch then it's a small price to pay a small price to pay for robot arms
What if they want to work?
Then they will. They just don't have to. They could do things like the arts and sciences side by side with machines to help humanity.
In regards to augments only being plausible for the rich: Plastic, nanobots, and time. That's all it takes.
Then they will. They just don't have to. They could do things like the arts and sciences side by side with machines to help humanity.
But suppose they don't want to be involved in arts and sciences? Who will employ them?
Uh..I don't think you actually understand trans-humanism
Care to explain then? This does makes me question a little something, but doing it here, would probably be too... "Dumb and destructive". Better not do it before a shit typhoon rises up.
... taggart? [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] to those saying how large corporations will keep augmentations from you, well do large corporations keep guns from you? or cell phones? if you seriously think that will be a problem, then capitalism is the underlying system that will make it happen, not the augmentations themselves. christ you people dont even understand what your arguing against. "hurr ban hivemind because capitalism will motivate people to strip me of my rights"
Care to explain then? This does makes me question a little something, but doing it here, would probably be too... "Dumb and destructive". Better not do it before a shit typhoon rises up.
How could we possible become robots? What makes us human is our mind, not our body. Even if we would somehow replace every single thing in our body, we would still be ourselves unless we replace the brain, which in itself is pretty dumb (altering it is something completly different). Also, "just because"? The chance to greatly improve the quality of live is a "just because"?
Seriously, first person to make an optical implant of a comparable quality to my own eyes with nightvision and optical zoom can take all my money. I would buy a pair instantly. And a wireless HUD to all of your devices would be awesome. [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] You could never be caught watching porn!

Would you rather feel a girl's leg or a cold metal one? Which one looks better? Hell, even a leg thats been modeled almost exactly to the real deal. Even our mind could be replaced in due time it seems. I don't think its what makes us human. What I do think that makes us human is nothing physical that can actually be changed. Its our ideas, the way we are. Correct me if I'm wrong, but for the good or the bad, it seems we are just trying to achieve everything artificially instead of going all natural. Probably not wording it right but... For example, in love. Would you prefer to be in love with someone for real, or turn on your "love machine"? (for lack of a better term and the actual stuff that triggers it in your brain) Besides, we still don't know everything about this whole deal. We don't know what kind of problems could arise from that, and with a million problems solved, a new one could arrive and basically fuck you up more then all those problems just because of that little metal part in your brain. For example, Deus Ex HR tackles the problems between "non-augs" and "augs", and how the augs can get jobs easier then non-augs because they are better "qualified" for them. Another problem is augmentation rejection. People require neuropazyne so the body doesn't rejects the augs. For life. Also in the game, the father of augmentations, Hugh Darrow, basically "hacked" every augmented person in an attempt to show the world how augs would mean the end of humanity. Imagine if someone could "hack" your eyes and then you would be blind? Correct anything if its wrong. Just my 2 cents.
All this talk of transhumanism and cyborgs ruling the world, while in their secret underground base, the geneticists are working on making us shoot lasers out of our bodies without the need for metal bits. Then it's going to turn into a situation like in that game where it's cyborgs vs biologically enhanced humans or some shit. I don't even know.
Would you rather feel a girl's leg or a cold metal one? Which one looks better?
ignoring the stuff where you just talk about the plotline of deus ex i've thought this bit out too. who would find metal arms or legs or whatever sexually attractive? sure some people would but i doubt the majority would. but, ya know, the people who are getting augs would think that through too. limb replacements would be the sort of thing that would be rare - they'd tempt people in the military, security businesses, intense heavy labour and professional sportsmen. few others would trade away their flesh and possibly their sex appeal for improved performance
Damn, look at the rotary gears on that tranny. I would totally transfer data with those enhancements, if you know what I mean.
Use nanobots to replace bone/muscle structure-> Improvement that's not visible from the outside. You don't necessarily have to amputate limbs to improve them, you know
