Disney's 'Frozen' crosses $1-billion mark with Japan still to go

wind rises would have won if not for the animation ghetto
princesses and castles and joy and wonder only, serious subject matters like death and disease and sex est verboten
I mean, that and the fact that the oscars are a strict no foreigners zone. Earnest and Celestine might have had a chance if not for that, goddamn it's a good movie.
Wind Rises only came out 3 days ago.

still counts
just like Earnest and celestine is nominated too, and it isn't even out in america yet.

Maybe for wide release. They've screened it more than a few times before though.
I should know, I was at one of them.

To be up for Oscar nom the film needs to have been screened a certain number of times in the US. Usually for animation it's a low key deal since nobody in the academy gives two fucks anyway and only animation turbo nerds show up.

Ernest et Celestine was fucking amazing.

That movie is just pure distilled happiness. I challenge anyone alive to watch that movie and not smile at least once.

TL;DR $ is more important in Hollywood for a Oscar nomination in most cases than being actually good.
I didn't realise this was so bloody popular. Just looked like your average yearly disney movie to me.
It is your average yearly disney movie. It's just really overrated.
Both me and my girlfriend hate it.
I've said all of this before but: It's an overhyped moneygrab by Disney with terrible, unnecessary songs (yes, I know, Disney does musicals, but this one made literally no sense whenever they broke into a song it felt forced and dumb), stupid stereotypes, predictable villains, terrible comedy-relief (whoever came up with Olaf has the sense of humor of a moldy piece of bread), boring story, lame fan-service (towards the people who watched Tangled, generally).
The only good thing it had going was the visuals, but really only because Disney has a tendency to "steal" assets and employees from Pixar. Look at it this way: Whenever a movie is denied by Pixar, Disney makes it in their own studio instead.
IF PIXAR SAYS YOUR MOVIE IS DUMB, YOU DON’T PRODUCE IT.
You linked some decent movies there
Just a correction: DisneyToon studios produced Planes, not Pixar.
Planes wasn't even Pixar though?

Cars was decent, it was just aimed at a much younger target audience than usual.
Cars 2 was pretty bad, yeah.
Planes wasn't even done by Pixar.
What's wrong with a bug's life ?
Monster's University is fine, it's by no means bad.
Haven't seen Brave.
Literally never heard of this movie.
It's the best disney movie I have seen.
Tangled was pretty good aswell.
I'm not even big on disney.

Brave is a bad film? Huh?
The only super shitty pixar movie ive seen was cars 2
I think the best part was how you said bugs life was a shitty movie
The movie is good because its basically Disney making fun of their past and opening up to the new genreation of people.
The movie really caught me by surprise, becuase I thought this was just gonna be another Disney formula movie but it wasn't.
The problem I have with Disney getting an Oscar is that their stuff is formated. The story changes, the setting changes, but it's the same formula every year, it's the same visuals every year, and it's the same craze every year. Their movies are good and likable but they are still blockbusters in essence and the fact they are somehow worth more in the eye of a jury than spontaneous, unique animated films simply based on the fact they make more money is beyond me.

The council of elders has decreed that disliking A Bug's Life, Brave, and Monster's Inc is the official Worst Opinion Ever.
Though Cars was flippin' terrible, you got me there. Planes, however, wasn't even Pixar.

One of the reasons Frozen was so well-received is that it broke away from their usual tropes and made fun of the formatting they usually use. The female leads aren't helpless damsels, the men aren't rugged heroes, the "one true love" schtick is kicked around the dirt, etc, etc. I didn't like Frozen quite as much as some folks on here did (I honestly thought Tangled was a better movie as a whole), but it did deviate a bit from Disney's usual repertoire.
i thoroughly enjoyed monsters university
when we went we were all college aged people and the rest of the audience was kids so we were the only ones laughing half the time
anyone saying this movie focuses on the sisters is delusional, the sisters only have like 4 conversations throughout the movie, otherwise than that its just shots of anna being silly with kristoff, hans doing some macho shit in the kingdoms castle and elsa being a whiny brat in her ice fortress.
If you like the movie thats fine, but dont tell me its a good movie cos it focuses on the ''true love'' aka the love between the sisters(who for that matter barely liked each other but yet the ending is supposed to make me feel sad cos [sp] oh no annam almost died for saving elsa although elsa fucking froze her heart in the first place[/sp].
You know what disney movie focuses on love between sisters? Lilo n' stitch. Although that movie doesnt entirely focus on it, the relationship between the sisters is a lot more emotional and believable than elsa's and anna's

A Bug's Life? A bad movie? What?? I'm not even touching Brave and MU here, how can you say A Bug's Life is bad?
TL;DR $ is more important in Hollywood for a Oscar nomination in most cases than being actually good.
Foreign films don't have a chance at all unfortunately, despite them having themes that are drastically different from our animated films (ie: "Spirited Away" and "The Illusionist"). If anyone is looking for variation, they need to look outside of their culture.
Spirited away did win an Academy award though.
The academy awards should really let movies from all countries compete on equal footing, in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong, I know that the Oscars are meant for American movies in the first place, but considering it's basically the film event of the year, they could probably change the rules up a bit to accommodate that.
Brave was uninteresting and Cars 2 was terribad.
The rest were great films barring MU which I haven't seen.

Then the Americans would lose almost every year then what will they pat themselves in the back with??
