• TOOL Guitarist Adam Jones on New Music: "There's A Lot of 7/4"

Anytime I hear something in a less common time signature I immediately overreact and assume it is done out of wankery
fuck 7/4
TOOL use weird time signatures and other cheap, easy compositional oddities, to make their music more complex. A good composer would use counterpoint and fitting escapades into other keys.
what do you people even hear to recognize a time signature anyway i can pick up on a tempo and that's literally it
what do you people even hear to recognize a time signature anyway i can pick up on a tempo and that's literally it
A time signature is just quantifying the tempo, for the purposes of sheet music appearing more readable. You could write a piece in any time signature, but it wouldn't change the apparent tempo.
what do you people even hear to recognize a time signature anyway i can pick up on a tempo and that's literally it
where the snares fall
what do you people even hear to recognize a time signature anyway i can pick up on a tempo and that's literally it
It has to do with how many beats are in a measure. 7/4 time means there are 7 quarter-notes in a measure. 7/8 time would be 7 eighth-notes in a measure.
Tool is amazing. Generalizing fans of anything only creates dissonance. I think it wouldn't be wrong to say that if you don't like any kind of well-accepted music then you are simply not in the right set of mind, there is nothing wrong with the music.
My problem with like 90% of Tool fans is they try to bring Tool into like fucking everything music related. They're okay yeah, but they aren't the best band ever.
Tool is awesome, it was one of the first real progressive and advanced music that I listened to. Since then I found a ton of various different artists with their own sound an style, still I have never found anything similar to Tool. They're unique and I love their sound. A shame to see that they have such trouble, I never even knew about this. Also why the fuck are people so hostile.
it's a meta thing, it's not like the entire song is about weird time signatures, they only become apparent after analyzing the song's structure, and that just adds more depth to it, which is in turn what makes Tool really cool, the amount of work and layers of complexity in every single thing they do. the excruciating detail they employ is what defines them. otherwise they'd be just another alternative rock band singing about weird shit and doing drugs all day long. the perfect example is Schism, which would be just another alt rock single due to it's nice cool bassline and distorted guitar chorus, but then you realize that it changes time signatures something like every 30 seconds, and to great effect since each change causes the pace of the song to shift, making it unpredictable and therefore interesting enough to actually listen to. like it's okay to not like people who just listen to Tool for their technical prowess but to deem it a gimmick is a very narrow way of looking at their music. they don't do them because they know how, they use their skill to complement their work, to make it more complex, more transcendental. it's not like they're doing 5 minute solos every 2 minutes or something that is actually hard to listen to (like every recent Dream Theater record bar their very last one), they legitimately make good and interesting compositions. [editline]27th July 2014[/editline] which is not what Tool does.
This is probably the most pretentious post I've seen on the internet today.
This is probably the most pretentious post I've seen on the internet today.
Not really. Everything he said was true. Schism does change time signatures left and right, would easily fit in with A Perfect Circle if it didn't, clearly was intentional demonstrating skill and isn't really a gimmick.
This is probably the most pretentious post I've seen on the internet today.
if you can't wrap your head around a little 7/4 here and there, then god knows how you'll be able to handle this:
if you can't wrap your head around a little 7/4 here and there, then god knows how you'll be able to handle this:
Eh, Dream Theater has been for like 15 years the epitome of the "20 minute instrumental section with 5 minute solos" songs that are really about fucking nothing. There are instrumental bands I fucking love, but they deliberately try to avoid horribly long sections that sound like nothing but "hey I'm a really good guitarist and I like to show it". Like, Dream Theater has fantastic albums like Awake and have in general produced fantastic tracks, but then they have shit like this: Which is a fucking 19 minute song about the "protagonist" being scared shitless of some weird dude that sounds like a serial killer but in reality is just weird and was just trying to make a friend, which sounds more like the plot to a Saturday-morning cartoon rather than a song by a Grammy award winning band.
What's the time signature on those 'staches because I can't fucking handle that.
can't wait for the album whenever it eventually comes out hope they can justify the wait
This is probably the most pretentious post I've seen on the internet today.
uh why
The 5/4 time signature made this song.......
What's so crazy about 7/4 anyway? The MI theme tune is in 7/4 iirc
Tool is fucking awesome, I can't think of a single bad song they've made. Maynard has an amazing voice.
IMO some of the songs on Ænima are a bit hit and miss, but overall the quality of their music is absolutely stellar and really thought-provoking. The fact that they've only released 4 albums in the past 24 years and still command such a loyal following speaks volumes about their musicianship. I wasn't a big fan of 10,000 days except Jambi, which was a kickass song. So I'm hoping it's more like aenima.
Man, I clicked on this thread because I thought that the band name tool was funny. Now there's all this time signature shit I don't even know anymore
Somebody should make a song in 69/34 time
Somebody should make a song in 69/34 time
yea there is so much weird stuff out there, my band director once told a story about these guys who made a song called "256/4" and the joke was that the whole song was one measure long, with 264 beats or something like that
