itt: pictures of cyborgs and 'hilarious' references to them in popular culture
incredible if one day we'll actually be able to experience that kinda stuff though
I love news like this. People said I was crazy to predict cyborgs in our lifetime, but these kinds of stories only go to show how quickly the future is actually coming. It's strange how quickly these sorts of advancements seem to have come about, and knowing that the things which I consider the absolute pinnacle of scientific/medical research are actually achievable gets me giddy for the future. I can't even imagine what sorts of breakthroughs we might discover in the next ten, fifteen years, but I can't wait to find out.
Holy fuck I just read that issue of Popular Scientist 5 minutes ago.
:psyduck:
Congratulations! Your civilisation has discovered Synthetic Nerves! *cue Civilisation music*
Sadly not: while the signal to the prosthesis would be powered by the brain, the actuators would need their own power supply to operate, in the same way that muscles are supplied with sugars for fuel by the bloodstream.
Well your minus an arm, so there will be surplus sugars and fats floating around, dip some artificial arteries into the circulatory system take the surplus fats and sugars and perform glycolisis on them.
Behold power your robot arm by eating.
Protip - we could just regrow the god dam arm instead... we can do this now...
Then you have the issue of reconnecting all the muscle fibres, nerve fibres, bones and circulatory system.
With prosthetics you have a stronger more durable limb, and all you have to do is thread firbe optics to some nerves and you're sorted.
I wouldn't like to lose a limb, I feel bad for those who have and it was an accident but this is great if you can get along with your daily tasks.
Can I get one with a built in phone? oh and a ION cannon?
I'd rather have ion cannons for legs than an actual legs.
"You're calling me a cripple?" *PSHOOM*
Christ am I the only one willing to lose an arm for this
i would rather keep my hands as i would most likely crush my small penis with a robotic arm
while trying to masturbate and cook at the same time
inb4 military transhuman divisions.
:science:
As excellent as this is, our technological advances are beginning to scare me.

Hey, it shouldn't. Just shows that the future is getting closer every minute. Prosthetic limbs means soldiers who lost a limb or two can walk again with ease. I am not scared, I am more amazed and eager to see the next big advancement!
oh man it sucks how we can't even witness the earth even a thousand years from now, which is relatively short length but for humans obviously a lot of shit can happen in that time.
but then again maybe immortality, through robotic technology perhaps, but in the next 100 years? This arm thingy costed like 6 million

And when you wank with it, it feels like someone else!
Oh my god, everything is coming to awesome in my life time.

So junk food would actually make my arm stronger?
I posted this a week ago

Its the model of the arm that DARPA is using for these experiments.
I want to work for DARPA now.
