More than 100,000 attend anti-gay marriage protests across France, as counter-protests also held
Where's the evidence to say that everyone there is religious?
Because there are two types of reasons to hate gays: religious and "because they're icky." The latter don't show up to protests because even though they wouldn't want to touch another guy's dick, they don't give a shit what two gay people do in the privacy of their own bedroom or if they can get married and enjoy the same legal rights. The other argument is that "marriage is for baby making," and "marriage is a religious institution," both of which fall into the "I'm not religious but still think gays are icky," crowd.
I'd like to see the people who use the "oh well gays can't have kids" (as someone pointed out in one of the signs) argument try and rule that men who are impotent and women who are barren cannot get married either, or that removal of testicles or ovaries due to cancer should nullify an existing marriage if the parents don't already have kids. Or how about a law that says if you don't have kids x years after you're married, then you've defrauded the system under the false premise that you wanted children, because marriage is only for baby making.
Marriage isn't a religious institution, it is and always has been a contract between two families, long before any religious scriptures were written. In the old days, it was a legal contract between two families to trade land and property (hence the dowry), and as the institution evolved and started including more things like visitation rights, it became more of a government contract than anything else, and the argument being pushed by the pro-gay rights movement is that the law states that you cannot prohibit someone from entering a contract because they are gay, same reason they can't prohibit someone from getting married because they are an interracial couple (not that it hasn't been tried), which is also why the same argument doesn't go for polygamy or bestiality as the anti-gay movement likes to bring up. Government contract between two people, which if the law was upheld as it is written, cannot discriminate against homosexuals.

Has it occurred to you that some of the "Because they're icky" demographic - Most of them, in fact - Use religion as a way to justify protesting the rights of gays? Because they're repulsed by it and can't get their heads around it? To their tiny, withered brains, anything that disgusts them or that they don't 'get' must be morally wrong.
Because there are two types of reasons to hate gays: religious and "because they're icky."
You should hear my friends. I've heard "because one kid was staring at my dick", "because I don't want them to hit on me", "because it's not hot", or "you're defending gay people, so you must be gay you fag"
I'm pretty sure that their religion is the cause of their homophobia, not a symptom.
You'll find that the majority of religious people pick and choose what they 'believe' in from the bible to correlate with their own beliefs/values.
I know someone who hates homosexuals but thinks having sex before marriage is fine.
I didn't know France had so many conservatives.
I always seem to forget that people like this still exist.
I always seem to forget that people like this still exist.
they're slowly dying out thankfully
i certainly wouldn't call their speech free. seems they're all indoctrinated by a thousand-year old institution of hate and bigotry
That doesn't stop their view from being valid in a sense. Notice how with your expression you are utterly denouncing their entire religion as hatefull and bigoted. Just like that, you're commiting the same crime against which you preach.
On top of that, while I personally don't care about a nuclear family, or if homosexuals can or can not adopt and or have children in a full family I can understand that some people might.
At least they tried to seperate themselves from the total bigots with stuff like pro-family not anti-gay.
In a lot of nations there's also essentially only one difference between civil union and marriage. Only a marriage can be pushed on a priest to do. A civil union cannot. And that holds a whole different bag of religious freedoms.
I didn't know France had so many conservatives.
France is a very very mixed bag. They're fairly liberal in a lot of things, but are almost on the same level as Poland or Spain in a lot of others. Usually when they feel something encroaches on their "culture" they get very defensive. A good sympton is how much they protect french inside of France.
This may be a bit random, but as an American who only has international news to rely on for this shit, but this goes to all French Facepunchers:
How is France doing right now? Economically, socially, just, overall? We used to be such best buds France, beating up the Brits, making monuments for each other, bailing each other out of mindless wars.. I miss the good old days :C
Economically we're doing a bit less great than Germany but still one of the strongest in Europe as of now. Socially, Hollande hasn't done shit since he's been elected, hell he recently discussed with ministers and high rank people (my constitutionnal law professor included, Mr. Melin-Soucramanien) what to do most on the question of occupying multiple state mandates at once, the people expect actions from him, not words. It was more of an "anti-Sarkozy" vote than a "pro-Hollande" one. Now sure, he's legalizing gay marriage, which is a great thing, but he has yet to do something important on what he was elected for : putting our country back on its feet.
We're talking a lot about those anti-gay protests, but really they're not that important, as in, we're talking about it in the news and that's about it, nobody really is shaken by this. I wish something like that would happen in Bordeaux tho, just so I could join the counter-protest.
It's kinda hard to get a good and unbiased opinion on how France is doing (mine is definitly biased, I hate Hollande even more than I did hate Sarkozy) as we have a big amount of parties and people opinions' tend to differ regarding which one they feel the closest to. So Max or any other French from Facepunch might not agree with everything I said. This is really different from America when you really mostly have a Liberal and Republican point of view.

I have a feeling that the pro gay marriage (or at least anti dumb people) protests would have quite a bit more people if everyone was just casually dressed.

Actually, you can just join if you're casually dressed.
I'm going at a pro gay marriage counter protest in Bordeaux by the 8th of Dec., it's basicly just inviting crapload of people on Facebook, then mouth to ear. I'll tell you guys how it was and take pictures.

The point I'm trying to make most people would be embarrased to be in a crowd spearheaded by a guy with CLITO DILDO written on his arm wings. Or something even more flamboyant.
Wow, I had no idea France was such a backwards contry.

It's not like everyone's dressed like that though. That group of people was probably a 1/10 of the protesters
but I see your point though
[editline]18th November 2012[/editline]
though the point of a parade is to make people more comfortable with homosexuality, so I think that being more flamboyant and extrovert is a good thing. Because who the fuck cares, honestly, if someone is dressed like that?
[editline]18th November 2012[/editline]
the clito-dildo costume isn't even that bad either
Wow, I had no idea France was such a backwards contry.
Same as every country except like three
every country has it's flaws <3
Wow, I had no idea France was such a backwards contry.
There are 65,436,552 people living in France.
Just 100,000 turned up to the protests.
Wow, I had no idea France was such a backwards contry.
We have a socialist president who said in advance he'd legalize gay marriage. Only a few showed up in the anti-gay protest when you consider the amount of French citizens.
All in all we're doing pretty great me thinks.

Good point, but 100 000 people gathering all over the country tells me it's not just your usual loose bunch of religious nuts.

There's them, and the usual bunch of guys having "arguable opinions". The joys of democracy, the majority of France is pro-gay marriage as polls and the fact it's going to be legalized showed.
I disagree. Religion is their excuse.
How so? I've never me people that didn't like gay people that weren't religious.

I've never actually understood that. They're complaining about how they aren't treated like normal people and how they aren't any different, and then they dress up in things like THAT. Last time I checked, wearing a strap-on on your chest and having wings with the words "CLITO DILDO" on them weren't exactly normal. It would make them look a lot better if they were just wearing street clothes.

Most are casually dressed, medias take pictures of the most noticeable and easily recognizable.
new religion of faggotism, abortion is executable and gay marriage is jail time.
but it's practiced by a majority of my country or something so it's okay that it influences our government

It's a parody of the anti-gay protest, the one with the paper wings that say 'mom' and 'dad' and the interpretive dance:

Sounds counter-productive, doing that would more likely drive people away from it.
If you want people to be comfortable with it, act normal, show them you aren't all the perverted freaks they think you are. Doing that is just playing right into their perception of you and further entrenching that view.
Not saying you aren't allowed to do it, just that if your goal is to gain acceptance from haters, you aren't doing yourself any favours by going that route.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the wings to say "MOTHER MOTHER" or "FATHER FATHER"?

i think they've come to terms with the facts you can't really fight the anti-gay "family defense" associations with logic
