Well this is better than homeless people who commit worse crimes like robbery just to go to jail.
He probably did it on purpose, during this time of the year, homeless get in jail on purpose so they can keep warm and have some food and a shower.
Doesn't seem like it, since there's a good chance he might have not gotten caught.
uhh, jail for six months is pretty bad. it's not a vacation at the Hilton.
He still trespassed on someones property and stole from them. You don't do that and not expect repercussions.
It seems like the court is making an example out of this man.
being in jail is probably better than living in the streets and having to fend for yourself when you're homeless
if anything, the judge is doing him a favor by giving him jailtime

its not living in the streets, either

i'm not saying he deserves it, but he's certainly better off with jail time
"He was jailed for two terms of six months each to run cocurrently."
I don't get why a year is so hard to say.
Anyways, I feel bad for him.. but there's not much to do about it anymore. Hopefully he'll be safe.
at least he'll be sheltered for the rest of winter

maybe because it's not a year?
Poor guy. Yeah he stole a key, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures.

At least he'll be warm in prison
:smith:
Someone should set up a donation thing to go bail him out.
They're making an example of him.
Maybe he wanted to go jail...
By cleaning up after himself
While I hate normal squatters, I almost agree with this. This is almost victimless, given how respectful he was, and the situation. But prison time can only be benefitial to him, a place to sleep and guaranteed meals, and not having to deal with -10 degree weather is pretty awesome.
But it kills his last chances of ever getting a real job again. That's the worst thing I see about it.

Having a criminal record shouldn't affect most peoples hiring, regarding to the crime. If they're a corporate theft, then yeah, sure. But someone who robbed a store to get by when they were 16? Something like that? It should all be kept in context, because criminals who are trying to reform are told by the system they can't, because of their record. It makes them turn back to crime, so what good comes of it? Fucking punishment based systems. Punishment deters few, and reforms fewer still. We want people fixed of these things, we need to help them fix themselves because they'll never fix otherwise, and we just get more crime.
I think that if he didnt do it he would die should have been something the judge should have thought about.
They will be GIVING him more than he had to start out with.
He had freedom before
now he doesn't
Huh,I guess Everyone over here were right. The Polish arnt stealing out jobs.
He had freedom before

It gives the company a bad name if he offends again.

Although I fully agree with this, the grim reality is, that he is fucked over.

Unless it's a crime of corporal character, or something having to do with neglect during the job, it shouldn't concern anybody. What whoever does in his free time shouldn't concern his employer at all, and the employer shouldn't be anyhow responsible for it.

Freedom to sit around a dumpster hoping not to freeze to death?
I apologize if I don't see the side of your argument.
While coming home to a hobo in my house would be rather surprising, I personally would have let him stay.
why didn't he just go to a homeless or emergency shelter
It's sick, to be honest, but there is no way to avoid the fact that he committed a crime and he will be put in jail for it. But he sounds like a nice guy, cleaning after himself. If I was the flat owner I would've gave him a room to stay in and had him work for me around the house. But I guess it's good he goes to jail, food, shelter, sex and water for a whole year.
[sp]hurk[/sp]
so
he walked in and popped a squat for 4 days straight?
On the bright side, it will be summer when he gets out.

I'd let him stay. And give him a shotgun.
Here, let's put it into simple terms according to natural law: did he cause HARM to ANYTHING or ANYONE? No. Did he cause LOSS to ANYTHING or ANYONE? No. He should not be Persecuted.

he broke into (with keys he had stolen earlier) somebody's house
sorry but that's against the law - I mean I agree that it's a morally grey area but it's illegal, no question about it
like I said before, why didn't he just go to an emergency/homeless shelter

actually to say it's against the law is a big stretch considering law only includes natural law which is Cause no harm or loss, which means it's either an act or a statute...
and anyway, don't look use whether something is legal or illegal to help determine whether it's good or not. with morality, law is irrelevant. people are more important.
