• Pop music too loud and all sounds the same: official
You often lose dynamics and clarity because compressors destroy the transients and "attack" of many instruments (the initial phase of a note where the tone is building up). For example, this makes percussion instruments and solo vocals sound less interesting. You're basically boosting everything in the song up to the same level to make the whole louder. But I guess this isn't as much of a problem with most metal songs.
It's not too much of a problem when you're listening to the radio in a car. Especially when classical music is playing you have to keep changing the volume so you can hear the quieter bits and then change it again when a loud part comes around which can be annoying
Radiohead is good:
I prefer the post-Kid A stuff. I don't wanna attack anyone's taste in music, but I can't stand listening to the radio anymore. 99% is the same damn marketable stuff. There's nothing wrong with making money off of your music, but at least put some effort in to making something original, something memorable. I don't think anyone is gonna be listening to "Fireworks" or "Poker Face" in 30 years. It's fine if you wanna listen to that stuff, but I think the target audience will learn to appreciate different music as they grow up, that's just my take on it. I don't see this kinda music making a lasting impression on music history, maybe as a whole, but not individually. But I guess it's all a matter of taste in the end. It's crazy how much music has changed over the years. I know that these songs aren't at all comparable in genre in lyrics, but they are comparable in popularity. Or maybe I'm just rambling without making any sense, I don't know.
I think music in general has taken a dip, but that doesn't mean that there isn't fantastic music being made out there. I must say that I do feel despair when one of the biggest names right now sings like this: I don't care about singers not being fantastic if they make good music overall, but this is really not up to par in any way. It's ameteur level, and not in the very good part either. There's good music being made all the time, but much of what's surfacing is just not part of that. That doesn't mean that this is necessarily a new thing, but I can't really say much about the popular music in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, as I might just have gotten a skewed view of what was popular back then.
You guys know there is a subforum for music right?
Zere vill be no cross discussions, ten years in ze camps. schnell
Saying pop music sounds the same is a massive generalization that oversimplifies many subgeneres.
Saying pop music sounds the same is a massive generalization that oversimplifies many subgeneres.
Nope, It is all louder and samier than ever.
Isn't all of this subjective anyway? If you think about it it's impossible to properly criticize any art form because every single person's tastes are different. You can only really tell by each individual artwork (in this case song) whether you like it or not. This is the reason why I can listen to jazz, classical, techno, rap and metal easily because I decide whether to like a song based on its individual merits (how it sounds to me), and not its genre.
That's silly, of course it's possible to criticize music.
I'd say KMFDM but they're actually Industrial.
There are plenty of rock/metal bands that have politics in their songs. Older Megadeth is a big one, and even Dream Theater has a song on stem cell research. Then there's the entire overall genre of punk, which has ties to rock and metal...
damn good music.
I had ear cancer. This got rid of it, along with my hearing. 10/10 would listen to again.
My music is pretty quiet because I'm a pretty bad producer. I get really, really high peaks so I have to amplify it a bit and put a hard limiter on the very tops of the peaks just to get it to the level of 70s music

I prefer dynamic recordings because of how well they breathe. Ultra-compressed stuff gets tiring on the ear.

At least dynamic stuff is a little more forgiving with excessive volume.

It's literally a trait of a poor signer.
for all we know the shitty dynamics are caused by poor encoding. that looks like a low-bitrate mp3 [editline]1[/editline] though, power metal bands aren't really known for their mastering
I have a fair number of low bitrate (128) MP3 and Ogg files and most of them don't look/sound nearly that bad.
Sometimes when in the car listening to the radio I'd rather have the radio from Fallout I swear I've heard the same backbeat in 4 different fucking songs
I have to listen to Pop and Rap every day at my workplace. It really does all sound the same.
Then some mega death metal also sounds "all the same"
Then some mega death metal also sounds "all the same"
Except you're right, there are a lot of bands in every genre who don't try to deviate from the norm and just copy their favorite bands' style. The problem is that an alarming number of mainstream bands are also cookie cutter like this, partially by design (a pop song must be catchy and appealing to a large group of people rather than a niche).
