Our politics may be, and the underfunded schools that teach these kids to be stupid maybe. But peppered across the US, People are organizing. there's a hurricane brewin' that's beginning to feed upon itself.
The more the GOP pointlessly prioritizes petty social issues to their own narrow vision, the more people will begin to realize how stupid their were for voting any of them into office.
I literally remember my mother saying she voted for the 2010 GOP candidate in my state because "he seemed to believe in god more." Of course, this was judged by the fact that the only thing she knew about the candidates was what she saw on their television commercials.

Then, of course, he entirely misunderstands the point of separation of church and state.
It's not that we believe "rights are granted by the government", it's that we believe the government should represent and support rights that we, as thinking, reasoning human beings determine to have no rational reason for being prohibited by the law.
The government is not the master, it's the tool.

I still consider us to be part of the Midwest, but I'll agree with you that it's pretty much as close as you can get to a Southern state without being one.
