It was for PR, much like how Putin is shown as a badass today.

You Putin isn't really a horse-back riding, hunting, super spying, legend who defends reporters from tigers??
Well the part about spying.
Except I've never been sure how that was a good thing.
"You can trust me, I used to be in one of the most brutal secret police-esque organisations!"
but at least Trotsky wouldn't have been a insane illiterate autocratic ruler. he was anti-police state and pro-democracy.
Eh... Trotsky was probably the least authoritarian of the Bolsheviks, but realistically, he was a Bolshevik. And an authoritarian. Reading Terrorism and Communism gives me chills and echoes of Stalin and Lenin.
His rule in the military wasn't a very nice time for those in it, and he still supported Lenin, an unapologetic autocrat, and had no quarrels with being a head of a dictatorship and stealing power from a legitimate social-democratic revolution, the resulting rebellions he crushed and civil war he lead in favor of the Bolsheviks.
Although other than that, he really did seem like a chill guy. It's quite unfortunate that he had to side with the Bolsheviks- I feel that had he remained a Menshevik, then I could really get behind him- I love what I've read from him, but he seems so contrasting in this writing from his actions.
Well only because Lenin died. He would've rather handed the top position to someone like Trotsky.
Doesn't matter what Lenin would have done of what he would have liked to have done. Stalin had the game won from the start. In the world of politics and government, the most aggressive, powerful, and commanding figures always take control. I wouldn't be surprised if Stalin had started another civil war if Trotsky had been made ruler personally by Lenin.

Lenin had stated though that he hadn't wanted Trotsky either- Stalin was a 'flexible' man, though- he would not have started conflict with Trotsky. During Lenin and Trotsky's exile between the February and October Revolutions, when the social-democratic government was ruling, Stalin almost got his ass kicked back into the stone age when Lenin returned to find Stalin had suddenly had a change of heart on his policies and was now completely pro-war, pro-unity, pro-democracy, and pro-social-democratic government- that is, until Lenin began working again and plans to take power were being drawn, at which point Stalin again had a change of heart and was by Lenin's side.
We again see this after he took power- he was all democratic, gradualist, etc, in speech, winning over hearts and minds, and then executing those same hearts and minds in his totalitarian reign. I still feel sad for poor Bukharin, just before his execution, he had a note sent to Stalin's office, reading, "Koba (Stalin's pet name used by his close friends), why do you need me to die?"
I have no doubt Stalin would have played along had Trotsky gained power until he was in a position of power himself.

It was a bloody time. From the moment the Tsar was deposed it was inevitable another autocrat would rise to the top. The Bolsheviks were essentially the most ruthless of the parties of Russia, which helped in their quest for power. Stalin was pretty much the most ruthless of the Bolsheviks, which helped him in his rise to power.
When Lenin wrote a letter about the danger Stalin posed, Stalin intercepted the letter and made sure that Lenins illness would make him unable to govern. Stalin had a single goal, and that was getting to the top and making Russia get to the top as well.
You have to feel sorry for Stalin though as he seemed to have a tough early life. Abused by an alcoholic parent, caught smallpox, and to top it off his wife died. He told a friend: "with her died my last warm feelings for humanity"

And then he murdered millions and joked about the suicide of his son.
I feel no remorse for him, but it would make a great ad for not beating your kids.

No revolution, currently, just protests are arranged on Dec. 10, in more than 80 cities of Russia. A lot of these protests are already getting banned by local administrations and governments, however people are serious about it. In my city, for one, the protest was banned, but we are going to go no matter what.
Wish us luck, people, in less than two days we're getting beaten up.
Let this ignite nationwide protests. Russia has been a corrupted depressing shithole for long enough. People need to rise up.
the irony
