But I love that ride
Eh, Maelstrom is getting really outdated. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Magic Kingdom has a great illusion of you actually being out in open water when I went on it a couple months ago.
God forbid america has anything cultural for five seconds before micky mouse/donald duck/the three caballero's/insert character here has to appear to explain what we are looking at and hold our hands through the whole experience They modified test track (pleasantly surprised with that actually but still preferred the last one better) completely ruined the mexican boat ride For some reason brought back the very-odd-by-todays-standards captain EZO (why? ..because MJ died?) Bodged up Journey into Imagination (actually think it's ok but others i know waaay preffered the older one without the musical theme I swear to god if they TOUCH Spaceship earth i'm gonna napalm the place and start over myself with a land cleansed of impurities
Nobody prefers the Imagination pavillion that was before, they prefer the original one from 1983. The reason why they brought back Captain EO was because of MJ's death and because even without that it was still better than Honey I Shrunk The Audience. The Three Caballeros on the ride is actually one of the least worse upgrades made to EPCOT because they still talk about Mexico and you still get to see pretty much everything you'd see in the original ride, except there's the characters now- there are even sections of the rides where the Caballeros aren't there. Plus, Panchito is actually from Mexico, unlike the Frozen characters who are from a fictional land. You wanna complain, go to the Living Seas, where the edutainment part was completely replaced and now it's just a rethread of the Nemo movie and all the teaching is contained to a part of the pavillion that gets pretty much ignored because everyone goes right into Turtle Talk with Crush. Test Track wasn't that good. Considering what came before and after it (both in EPCOT and in Disney Parks), it really wasn't. The ride breaking down was a common event and apart from the final loop, there was nothing much to the ride. The new theme is an improvement because it harkens back to the old theme of EPCOT Center, enhances the edutainment and keeps the good parts of Test Track without being a messy, 90's clunk in the middle of Future World. I hate to break it to you but the Spaceship Earth you like is the fourth version of the ride, and I can assure you that they're going to change it, as that version was installed in 2007 and we've had a bunch of advances in communications since then. An update is inevitable.
This kinda pisses me off. My girlfriend and I went to Disney for the first time together and I witness as she meets her online Norwegian friend for the first time in her life (they've been talking for years about art and stuff). They're both really big on Norwegian history and really love the fact that Disney supplies actual history in their worlds areas. It was definitely a magic Disney moment that day. And then this shit happens.
lol are you forgetting that the Maelstrom is about magical trolls and vikings and polar bears? It's more of a caricature of Norway than anything.
I just wanna see how they make a boat ride about a movie based entirely on everything being completely frozen
Would it be safe to call Disney an empty shell of itself? Because that's what it feels like right now with them ruining EPCOT and shoving Frozen shit everywhere.
Absolutely not. Disney has been up the upswing again, with the likes of Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled, Princess and the Frog, and Frozen. In fact, the latter three are exactly what Disney used to do during their golden ages: taking old fantasy fairy-tales, and reimagining them to be Disney-esque. The marketing application of Frozen is just a business no-brainer: one of their most popular films in ages, so they apply it to other things. They do this with many of their movies and characters. Charades already said it, but arguably, it would have been much more appropriate for Magic Kingdom than Epcot, but, regardless. The concepts in and of themselves is nothing new, nor are they any sign of Disney crashing.
so is norway real life frozen? i want to fuck my hot anime babe waifu there if thats the case
I will never have a cutie pie norwegian aryan girlfriend :(
One less reason to go around the world showcase, it's more or less gift shops and resturaunts now, with the exception of Mexico.
uh excuse you, i worked at epcot
lol I remember when we used to vacation at Disney... ...Before we discovered just how much better Universal truly is compared to them. [editline]13th September 2014[/editline] [sp]fight me[/sp] Of course stuff always changes with time so who knows what might happen.
Come to Disneyland We still have the original Haunted Mansion and splash mountain is still pretty cool.
Maelstrom was a shit ride and the world showcase is amazing
this isn't what world showcase should be, it should be about the cultures not fucking movie rides, put that in the kingdom or the studios but not the one park that wasn't supposed to rely on characters. i mean princess meet and greets are fine but don't do this, it's basically saying "fuck you and your lore, norway"

Something popular gets a money-making ride at the owner's park more at 11
Maelstrom was a shit ride and the world showcase is amazing
I think people are seeing Maelstrom with rose-tinted glasses. Maelstrom wasn't even that good, also the Mexican temple right is pretty shit comparatively, the addition of the 3 caballeros didn't make it better or worse in my opinion. I mean, they fit the theme very well, and Walt Disney had a boner for all things South America and Central American.
i've never been to a disneyworld/land
As much as I hate Frozen, I also hated Maelstrom. Maelstrom was a terrible ride and never did much justice for Norway in the first place. But with the said, I still don't approve of a Frozen ride in Norway. They ALREADY replaced the viking artifacts in Norway with a Frozen showcase. Soon enough, Norway will just be "Frozenland." This is a bull shit move, and if they were to place the ride anywhere, it should have been in Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom, and replaced Maelstrom with a better Norway ride. Don't worry, I work for Disney and already personally called up Mr. Disney himself and told him to stop slapping the pippy bacon and make the changes I requested.
the thing that really makes me angry about this is that yeah, maelstrom wasn't the greatest ride, but it was one of the best concepts and ideas for how a world showcase ride should be, using a countries' lore and mythology to make a ride, not by just having a video or mexican small world. this ride being canned is just further proof that the new management doesn't care about what epcot was or what it should be.
Disney usually does a nice job updating their parks and rides, but the "update" to Test Track was really horrible. I get that they wanted to update the theme, but they literally replaced every part of the interior section with neon light strips and electronic sound effects. It's soulless. I really hope they keep the theming light for this new ride, but I doubt it. What a shame.
Wow that sounds shit, Test Track is like one of my all time favorite rides, mostly because it was like going through an actual test track but in a fun ride form. It did like the hill tests, turn tests, cold tests, heat tests, and finally the speed test which was fucking amazing. The best part was how it actually looked like a car testing place, at least in theme. Now it just sounds bland.

The ride is essentially the same but it's redesigned to look like tests being run inside a computer/virtual simulation. It has a very TRON Legacy feel with backdrops that light up as you move through them and things that get 'derezzed' or updated in real time. The soundtrack is really cool now and the theming is more clean, which ultimately fits the idea of EPCOT being a showcase for the future. Plus there's an interesting rerideability factor in that you get to design your own car and at the end you get results for each test, so people interested in knowing what makes a car do this and that and actually witness their designs being put to the test get an added factor.
I'll miss this ride, but I can see why they would want to upgrade it. Maelstrom has been dated for a while, and Frozen is Norwegian enough to be a decent replacement. Yeah, it doesn't fit quite as I would hope, but I can't really fault it when the Norway pavilion's already pretty heavily princessed already. (Akershus, the restaurant there, is basically the only Disney princess character dining option, and it's been that way for a while. I don't mind it too much, because a lot of their character actresses are ridiculously attractive.) Honestly, it'll be interesting to see what they do with it. It was in need of an update, but we'll see if Frozen's the right way to go.

But I agree that the new Test Track better fits the future theme.
If they want a good ride about Scandinavian lore, just go in and mix in a lot of old myths. Or take the Mystery Lodge approach, but instead of some old Indian shaman, it's a viking scop telling old stories. I'd ride the shit out of a ride if there's a part where Beowulf goes fucking full hulkster on Grendel.
The only way this will backfire is if the song they play is as bad as small world.

Wouldn't you guys rather ride Elsa instead? Oh wait, the ride's Frozen solid during winter
Instead of jerking off to memories of the ride people will just be jerking off to the ride
Not the Maelstrom! Now where will I go to sit and watch a short film about Norway after riding a boat ride about god damn Norway.
I've never been to Disneyland, on a scale of one to ten how much of a peasant does this make me?
I remember being shuffled onto Maelstorm at one point (It may have been like, 5 or so years ago) and I swear the speakers on the boat I was on was busted or quiet, because I could barely hear anything over a murmur. That's the only thing I remember about it besides a few vivid images.
