There's minimal if it's a HD clip and it was properly converted in the first place.
That said, 240P youtube clips have the sound quality of a small battery powered transistor radio.

youtube compresses the audio either way. it's pretty noticeable to me

Not denying that, just saying that if it's only a 240P video, then even a halfway deaf person can hear it's heavily compressed and thus sound like shit.
The sound quality of HD youtube video's are however good enough for most people.

while i'm an audiophile i'd rather have slightly-under-par free music than expensive as fuck high quality music

I listen to music from youtube, I dont even bother putting it on hd.
It doesnt amtter that much, it still sounds good, and I like mp3 compression to a certain extent
This is a brilliant idea, putting the power and money back into the artists hands. As long as the music is reasonably priced, this could overtake everything else very quickly.
