Thank you. I may post more stories later, if I can remember any specific ones :v:
Thankfully that one I had picture support since I documented it for a FP post that long ago. That was only posted in the EVE thread, though.
For some people, sure. I personally could spend many hours simply staring at market graphs and making money. It's very entrancing.
Stories like yours are the reason I want to play eve. I've tried getting into it twice already, but with no luck :C I think it's just the type of game that you needs friends to draw you into. A lot of the stuff in your original post like how you can peek into packages, I have no Idea how you would even figure that out on your own.

You really just need to join a good newbie friendly corp to teach you the basics when you first join the game, once you've got the hang of it and are actually understanding wtf is going on you're much more able to go off yourself and still do well
Jesus christ Scout. The human side in me wants to berate you for being such an asshole (and a bunch of other words I refuse to utter) but the opportunist in me can't help but respect you for making so much profit in such a short time. I hate to say such things, but you played that guy, played him for a fool. You stole everything of value from that guy, then proceeded to rip them off a second time. Honestly, that is nothing short of amazing. Stories like these are the reason I love monitoring EVE Online, but I will most likely never play it.
I'd be absolutely crushed if shit like that happened to me. Especially considering how much money shit like that can be worth.
Every story I read about EVE make me less inclined to play it.
I'm a nice guy, which basically equates to an open jar of money.

I think it's perfectly possible to be successful in EVE without being a dick
You just have to be clever and not get robbed

I really agree with this.
In EvE you can be an all around good guy, only fight straight fights and earn straight money, without really suffering a lot of downsides.
The only thing is that you have to be smart about it, just like everyone else playing EvE. This is because EvE Just isn't some MMO where you can grind in peace all day long and make fortunes, because people will try to take advantage of you, you just have to be clever enough to handle the situation properly.
Of course you can stick to only doing business in high security systems, but the income will be much lower, simply because the risk is much lower. When mining/salvaging/doing missions, you have to know how to handle a situation if someone suddenly disturbs your little bubble of peace or you will get fucked over immediately.

Ha, fair fights, why fight fair when you can lose?
only fight straight fights and earn straight money
The best kind of fight to start is the one I can't lose and the best kind of money to spend is someone else's.

In reality, that's just a myth EVE players like to perpetuate to make themselves feel better about playing Spreadsheets Online.
Fact is, the reason people have problems playing is all the god damn number crunching. It suits me just fine but then I'm a programmer.
Also seeing this reminds me of the PC Gamer article from a few years back where the Guiding Hand guys fucked over that alliance. That fucking article got so many people to play EVE...

Lol nice story scout, got one myself (sadly not as grand as yours):
Once made an alt to do some industrial stuff, and joined a random corp that said they had a hisec POS, (starbase). With labs I could use for a small fee. I never told them I was an experienced (by that time 2 year) player, and they never really noticed either.
POS:
Now posses come in all shapes and seizes.
Sadly the pics of the heist are on another PC so ill just give you some general ones I took as filler.
Below you can see a pos(Tower on the left) and they can be worth alot depending on their setup and seize (annywhere from 150 mil to billions). And are used by players, corps and alliances to defend space, provide staging areas, act as a base of operations or as industrial zone. They cost around 30 to 200 mil a week to keep fueled and maintained. Remember that 1 month of gametime at that point is around 300 million isk.

They gave me basic acces to their pos which basically means I can only use it and not change or remove annything. This went on as a little side project for a month or so while I was playing around on my main account in other area's of space.
Then one day, I recieved a mail from the CEO stating that he and the director went on a 3 week trip and had to tear the pos down since they had no way to fuel it while they where gone. I told them that I really needed it to make money to buy gametime, and since they still saw me as a nice and clean new player I convinced them to give me fuel rights and trust me with the upkeep of the pos.
At this point I was supposed to get acces to the posses fuel bay, but instead they gave me acces to friggin everything. I noticied this the same day, but of course didnt tell them and instead called up a friend that I had on my main account who had a big ship.
Ship in question: ORCA mining command ship:

2 days later they left and me and my friend got to work on dissmanteling the pos.
The modules on it (hangars, labs, silo's, guns, whatever) came in at around 500 million worth, and the tower itself was worth around 250 million. Upon dismanteling the tower I noticed that that they had 2 more corp owned posses in other systems that they had not told me about. They where stripped down and offline but the towers where still there. (one worth 250 and the other around 100 mil.
Stealing those got me to a total of 1.1 billion isk, which they lost for trusting the wrong person and screwing up their role management.
I never really heard from them again after this, I imagine took their losses and moved on.
Sure players the trailers big up the sandbox aspect of EVE, but this what it REALLY boils down to.

That said, on the other end of the spectrum...

In Eve is there any location besides your living room where you actually walk around on foot?

Huh, you can leave your ship now? Guess a bunch has changed since I played.

Yeah, you were supposed to be able to meet with other pilots and play poker and grab drinks and shit, but they fucked it so badly, it's what started the Jita Riots, it was a whole expansion that was centered around spaceship barbies.
Thankfully they brought shit back in line with Crucible and seem to be carrying that on with Retribution with the new dessies and shit.

No, and probably not for a while. Between the heft system requirements and the shitstorm that flared up last time they worked on that as a major focus for an expansion, walking in stations has taken a bit of a hiatus.

A long hiatus considering when it was first talked about and shown.
Also, scout I love you so much :3

I love it just as much as I thought I would, I don't know what kind of expectations you guys are going in with.
Shit, I was flying around in a destroyer for 3 months (mining, at that) because I never thought to upgrade to cruisers and I still loved every second.
When you go lowsec you go with a cheap ship or a gang of people.
Not with 200 billion worth of shit.
Can't tell if it serves him right for being in lowsec with that much shizzle or not.
Sucks for him though.

Well it's like he had the real cash equivalent in plain bills in his pockets.
As he rode a bicycle through the Korean DMZ

There's nobody in the DMZ. Its more like he put the cash in his pockets, put on a business suit, and rode a bicycle through Somalia

Sailing off the Somalian coast would be more accurate.
Also everyone had modern AT missiles and he figured he'd be okay since a bicycle isn't a vehicle

Do tell.

Basically they tried to introduce micro transactions into EVE, such as a monocle. The game economy runs entirely on in-game currency and PLEx (game timecode) transaction. The players were not amused. Several thousand gathered in Jita, the most densely populated star system in the game, and shot the shit out of it.

For more detail, said monocle cost about 70 USD.
The other articles of clothing were around $20.
Remember, you can only walk around in your own room, it's not multiplayer.
And a company newsletter touting how microtransactions were the future was leaked.
Pretty much a perfect shitstorm situation.
