Like Anorexia and Bulimia, ie the disorders where people literally starve themselves to death? That's also people's choice? [editline]27th April 2015[/editline] Or people dependant on smoking, or alcoholics, or people who grew addicted to any other drug? Just bad life choices, eh?
Exactly this, something people don't get is that overeating can be an actual mental health issue, like people who purge after a meal because they don't want to get fat, even though they're 90 pounds, or Anorexia, where you just plain don't eat at all. People who chronically overeat need help too, because the problem isn't solved with "wow what a fat fuck they just need to stop eating so much".
And yes, you chose that lifestyle and I'm saying you should change that immediately JUST LIKE OBESITY
I think you need to educate yourself before you post again
And yes, you chose that lifestyle and I'm saying you should change that immediately JUST LIKE OBESITY
okay im gonna make a quick assumption here and say you don't know much about addiction or mental illness.
It can be, but that's literally the exact opposite of what I'm saying The only disease that prevents one from becoming skinnier is diabetes, something you get from making the choice to be fat in the first place
This statement is wrong. Chronic overeating is a medically recognized psychological disorder.
You can be fat all you want, but the second it turns into shaming people who actually get off their asses once in a while, you can fuck off. Encouraging lifestyles that lead to obesity is equally awful
I personally think that fat shaming is a bad thing. There's no reason to act like a dick because someone weighs more than you. However, saying that being obese is unhealthy is completely rational, and is generally an okay thing to say. Weighing a bit more than the average movie star isn't bad, but weighing 400+ pounds is unhealthy, and will most likely cause severe physical problems. If someone calls you out on fat shaming when you say that it is unhealthy, they're being a douche. That ad is stupid though, there is no technical beach body, and the standard of being skinny as hell is stupid.
You can be fat all you want, but the second it turns into shaming people who actually get off their asses once in a while, you can fuck off. If anything they are right to attack this because nutrition supplements are an awful way of losing weight and exactly lead to eating disorders.
If you don't want to, you shouldn't be shamed
Choosing to be unhealthy is something to be ashamed of though.
Wow, this is such a class A example of 90% of SH missing the point. The point is that people are pissed off that adverts are still creating ideal bodies when really not having a body like that model isn't something to be upset about. All the people I know that have shared this aren't chubby feminists that moan about "thin privilege". This isn't about accepting obesity. It's about sharing the fact that not having the body of a model is okay.
If you don't want to, you shouldn't be shamed
At the same time though if you don't try to do anything about it you shouldn't sit there and whinge about not being seen as attractive. Honestly I'm sick of seeing fat people going on and on about "unrealistic beauty standards" just because people don't find their 300lb body attractive.
Choosing to be unhealthy is something to be ashamed of though.
Shaming doesn't work at all to make someone want to lose weight. It doesn't work to make people stop smoking or gain weight, either. Shaming someone for an addiction will only make them feel worse about themselves, which, if the addiction is something like eating or purging, will just make them do it more, because it's how they know to relieve depressive feelings. Being fat is unhealthy, but there are ways to help someone lose weight without calling them a fat fuck who needs to eat a salad.
Here's the thing about fat people. Most of us are fat because we are lazy and irresponsible. Plain and simple. Now not all fat people are like this, some are fat because of health reasons or limitations. But for those who are fat, because they are too lazy to jog a little and complain how society doesn't accept their clearly superior lifestyle, there ain't too much sympathy.
I couldn't agree more. I spent the majority of my teen years being overweight. It got to the point where I just felt disgusting and gross in my own skin. I got so sick of it last year that I decided to start exercising regularly and took the time and effort into planning each meal to create a calorie deficit. Because of my diet and exercise, I not only learned how to eat enough and how to eat healthily, I lost 50 pounds and I feel great. It wasn't anyone's fault but my own that I was overweight. I was lazy and didn't want to exercise, and I ate like a pig. It hurts to look at yourself in the mirror and say "Fuck, I'm out of shape and disgusting." You get fed up enough to where you get off your lazy ass and change it. The truth is, much like you said, anyone who doesn't have a disease, disorder, or physical disability can have any body they want to have. It just takes a lot of hard work and dedication. I'm certainly not for fat shaming, but we can't keep pretending it's okay to be fat. Not even for appearances, but for health reasons alone. Being overweight or obese simply isn't healthy. It contributes to heart disease, physical problems, as well as a plethora of other complications and problems. It's a fact that obese people don't live as long as someone who is a healthy weight. Obese people are also a lot less happy in their life most of the time. (I speak from experience on this one- but this isn't to say that all obese people are unhappy.)
But this isn't about this at all whatsoever because it's about edible supplement and not lifestyle whatsoever? The only people who think 300 pounds is healthy are in denial or some internet troll trying to get a laugh.
These kinds of threads are weird because honestly it's just another excuse to make jokes about fat people. Honestly I think these types of ads should be banned. I think that advertising for magic pills/programs/supplements is pretty fucked up.
Choosing to be unhealthy is something to be ashamed of though.
You don't have to be ashamed of being unhealthy. You just can't shit on people that want to be or people that want sell things for them to be healthy.
Those are 95% guaranteed to be trolls, really. The only people who think 300 pounds is healthy are in denial or some internet troll trying to get a laugh.
more often than not it's the former, actually
Telling someone that they're a fat fuck and they need to salad is like telling someone with a broken leg that they're a cripple and they need to do something about it
see the thing about empathy is that it should be inclusive to all people. i think you need to go and talk to more varied people and read some more books. go on the goodreads website. they normally have really good lists for varying subjects.
well that is one of the subtlest ad hominems i've had. mainly accusing me of being closeminded. i guess it's one way to go about it. i don't think empathy SHOULD be anything in any case. i can be empathetic towards burn victims who have no choice in their lives but to go through with a disfigurement and choose not to be empathetic towards fat people who make the choice to be fat. i don't hate fat people. i don't shame anyone for their body, i would never ever do that. horrible people do that. but i also don't find fat people physically attractive and i do not really feel empathetic towards them as a group. also you have no idea whether or not i read books. it's really annoying that you make assumptions like this. i talk to varied people every day over the internet too, fyi. as a sidenote, i agree that these types of ads should be banned actually. but not because of the "fat shaming" aspect as much as the retarded notion that there is some magic pill that will help you with weight loss.
Telling someone that they're a fat fuck and they need to salad is like telling someone with a broken leg that they're a cripple and they need to do something about it
Your analogy does not work at all
Telling someone that they're a fat fuck and they need to salad is like telling someone with a broken leg that they're a cripple and they need to do something about it
being obese is sometimes a lifestyle choice, having your leg broken isnt really a lifestyle choice. although you can tell someone with a broken leg that they live too dangerously.
Telling someone that they're a fat fuck and they need to salad is like telling someone with a broken leg that they're a cripple and they need to do something about it
it's not, that's a strawman. you can't affect your bone healing as directly and effectively as your weight. holy shit this thread is going fast
being obese is sometimes a lifestyle choice
Most of the time, I'd argue. Save the cases where people have disorders and or other physical limitations.
Your analogy does not work at all
ok telling someone that they're a fat fuck is like telling a retard that they're a retard? do you get my point?
ok telling someone that they're a fat fuck is like telling a retard that they're a retard? do you get my point?
that's the exact same strawman lol. except this time it's offensive to mentally handicapped people
ok telling someone that they're a fat fuck is like telling a retard that they're a retard? do you get my point?
You can't cure retardation. You can cure obesity.
omfg my entire point is that you are pointing out the obvious and it's useless if you call someone fat do you magically expect them to suddenly be at a healthy weight within an hour
lol if you actually think calling someone a fat fuck is going to make them feel motivated to go and lose weight
ok telling someone that they're a fat fuck is like telling a retard that they're a retard? do you get my point?
this insistence that fat people are incapable of losing weight is just as ridiculous as the idea that all fat people are fat solely because they choose to be
