Current wars deserve a general ranking with best from WWII - Petraeus may get a 5th star
I like how the guy's done mostly nothing and is getting a 5-star rank. Militaries have always done this sort of thing for morale. In WWII, Germany, on the verge of losing, began awarding Marshal ranks and Iron Crosses to soldiers who'd done nothing but support Hitler.
This is all for morale. Petraeus in reality probably is the least-skilled of the NATO generals: at least they've done something other than sit on their asses.
I was going to say something, but then I saw who it was and figured I might as well have a staring contest with the sun.
We were fighting a war we didn't need to and we pretty much lost, I'd say his performance was horrid.
Kind of hard fighting a war where the civilian population doesn't even know why you're there in the first place.

Yes, you can't destroy every single terrorist cell in the world. However you can keep places from turning into a safe haven for terrorists, for example the Pakistani/Afghan boarder.
The only single way to win the war in Afghanistan is to gain the trust of the locals, as hard as that is, we need to route as much Taliban influence in the area as possible. Taliban go to towns just recruiting young boys to become suicide bombers for as little as 5 USD. If we can gain trust with locals, we can win the war, if we don't then we lose.

This was explained pretty well in the book "Three Cups of Tea." Radicals would build mosques (well, not really mosques, the religious training centers for mosques) and would provide the only education for miles around, any secular schools being built would be burned down or denied building permits by corrupt officials.
It's hard enough fighting without the minds of the indigenous population, how probably see you as being imperialistic until you finally talk to them, but it's even harder when the only education they've received is by some cleric saying the Great Satan has come to destroy Islam and spread it's corrupting Western influence into your homeland.
Uhhh nobody made him join the military.
The job of the military is unquestioning loyalty, the morals of the war don't matter to the army, they go in there and get a job done, simple as that.
I'm saying he's a fucking moron for willingly doing the dirty work of the politicians and can't think for himself.
You have no clue how a chain of command works, do you?
You have no clue how a chain of command works, do you?
No the best general is an angsty teenager who fights the system. anarchy 4 life.
As far as I know he hasn't really done anything war winning so far.
However, if he turns Afghanistan around this man deserves more than a fifth star, he deserves General of the Armies.

good reason why noone should respect people that join the army
good reason why noone should respect people that join the army
Yeah man fuck all those mindless robots who feel some sort of patriotic devotion to their maternal country and who love the ideals upon which that country is so firmly rooted they're willing to stake their lives for it.
Just fuck those guys man.
good reason why noone should respect people that join the army
Most people believe they join the army for the right reasons, that they can help people have a better life by dealing with agressive forces in other nations.
Either way they can do the job and deal with it, or get thrown out with no job and little to no money for insubordination and disobeying orders.
Besides your average soldier just goes in and shoots the people trying to shoot them, there's no heinous crimes commited, they go in, do the job they're paid for and signed a contract to do.
Oscar Wilde had a saying that fits this well, "We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."
Either way, be fucking thankful that those people you give no respect have countless times saved your ass throughout the history of your nation, and they'd do it again for you even knowing how much of a cunt you are, cause they're all real nice like that.
good reason why noone should respect people that join the army
The alternative is an army of soldiers who spend their time constantly questioning the morals of every order they get. History calls these armies "defeated".
good reason why noone should respect people that join the army
Why? I have thought about joining the military on numerous occasions, it pays for schooling, it gives you a steady job, healthcare, housing, and tons of other perks.
good reason why noone should respect people that join the army
Do it, after I graduate college, depending on what job opportunities I get I may just enlist as an officer in the Army.
You dumb.
yep im dumb because i think unquestioning loyalty and lack of morals in a pointless war isnt deserving of respect.
if you think his description of soldiers is a description worthy of respect then ok.
If your boss tells you to do something you don't like what are you going to do? Say fuck off and get fired?
yep im dumb because i think unquestioning loyalty and lack of morals in a pointless war isnt deserving of respect.
No yeah you hit the nail right on the head.
If you don't see the problem with your argument then you straight silly my friend.
if you think his description of soldiers is a description worthy of respect then ok.
People obeying the orders of their commanders, who they more than likely respect, to destroy what the country percieves as a threat to the safety of it's population?
Yeah totally not worthy of respect, in fact these people are total bastards and nothing good can possibly fucking come from having these people around, in fact! we should excommunicate the entire armed forces because you see them as fucking sheeple.
Fuck while we're at it, let's burn down the government since they're clearly corrupt bastards as well.
Grow the fuck up you stupid mother fucker.

"I don't feel like going to work today, YAWN I GUESS WARS WILL FIGHT THEMSELVES." -Lachz0rs ideal soldier

The army won't take folk who have the army as a back up plan dude, at least that's how it is in the UK.
If your boss tells you to do something you don't like what are you going to do? Say fuck off and get fired?
if i thought the job was an unjust one then you bet. sorry if money doesn't mean more to me than my principles.
Do it, after I graduate college, depending on what job opportunities I get I may just enlist as an officer in the Army.
We can be army bros! Being an officer would be fucking cash.
"I don't feel like going to work today, YAWN I GUESS WARS WILL FIGHT THEMSELVES." -Lachz0rs ideal soldier
my ideal soldier is someone that defends his country, not one that attacks someone elses
if i thought the job was an unjust one then you bet. sorry if money doesn't mean more to me than my principles.
It's so easy to say that when you're not face to face with your boss and a pension sitting on the line.

jeez, for a sociopath you sure do get emotional about the army.
jeez, for a sociopath you sure do get emotional about the army.
Apathy breaks at rare moments.
Either way you're about as intelligent as a 4 year old with downs who just got a drill to the orbital cortex.

I'm pretty sure the US is different. The US Military is known for taking high school drop-outs and people with no back-up plan. They want recruits, and lots of them.
if i thought the job was an unjust one then you bet. sorry if money doesn't mean more to me than my principles.
The penalty for dissenting against your boss is being fired, the penalty for dissenting in the army is court marshal.

You don't get a choice if you are a soldier.

The U.S. army requires that you have a GED, but apart from that yeah they pretty much recruit almost anyone with a pulse.
The U.S. army requires that you have a GED, but apart from that yeah they pretty much recruit almost anyone with a pulse.
No it doesn't, I thought about signing up after I got my GED and they wanted me.
