they added another light bar on top of the new controller because fuck you i guess
I don't see any purpose any purpose buying this if its going to be a higher resolution but at the same fps. Unless if games will add an option to play 4k/30 fps or 1080p/60 fps. Still, fuck Sony for not realising that euros aren't the same as USD.
For the N'th time: The developers individually decide what resolution and framerate the games will run at. The PS4p is just as much of a "true" 4K60 console as the Scorpio will be, in that devs have the option to output in 4K60 if they want to. This does however not mean that they're obligated to do it, and as such there will be devs that focus on better graphical effects over resolution/framerate on both platforms.
The hardware supports it, the software has to adapt.
they said thqt in the article i linked
scorpio is the only console capable of it though

reminder that most 4K Tv's today you buy are gonna be smart tv's, which will have 4k netflix/amazon/etc. support built in to the TV's OS.
theres literally zero purpose to buy this ps4 unless you want more colors. And you'll only get more colors if you pay for a 700$ 4K TV After your 400$ purchase.
You can get a 55 Inch 4K TV w/HDR10 Support and a Xbox One S that includes every halo 1-5 for 800$ at US Best buy right now. Pretty good deal if you want to build up your xbox collection while you wait for scorpio, which msft says will be a actual 4k60 console.

So Sony acknowledges that higher frame rates is a game changer. Only took them how long?
Also wtf is this about HDR not being supported by HDMI? I could have sworn that older games have been flaunting this feature for years now.

HDR on televisions is a change in the actual video signal sent to your TV, hence the newer HDMI requirement.
Can we just switch to displayport already
Can we just switch to displayport already
Sure. When 99% of the TV market also uses it.
DP still isn't even totally pervasive in PC monitors. You'll usually only see it on higher end ones, and even then likely need a somewhat modern mid-range or higher GPU to use DP with. Give it time.

I wonder if Sony have updated the HDMI connector used in the PS4 Slim and newer PS4 models to take advantage of this, seeing as they're backporting the HDR support to all units. It surely can't cost more to have the more modern standard installed.

They have, on DP and VGA.

Can't say I've heard of any games that support it
You've played at least two, Alien: Isolation being one of them.
and ENB has supported HDR and up to 16 bit LUT in either raw or dithered back to 8bit for a little over a year.

Well I'm glad it'll become more mainstream now.
Maybe we'll see consumer HDR PC monitors soon hitting the market.
Despite all the 4K stuff, I'm guessing PSVR will only work with this upgraded version and not regular PS4s.
It would be neat at least if devs used this with something like Ni-Oh's choice between 'movie mode' and 'action mode' where with movie mode the game is 1080p 30fps and action mode where the game is 720p 60fps. Maybe provide people using the PS4 Pro an option between 4k/1080p 30fps vs 1080p/720p 60fps?
Rise of the Tomb Raider will do this
4K/30, 1080P/45-60, 1080P/30 with all the graphic whistles

According to DigitalFoundry TLOU Remastered gets native 4K at 30FPS mode

As I understand it PSVR is designed to work natively on standard PS4 models.

So is there a list of games it will run at 60 fps?
Isn't the Xbox One S an upscaler, too?
I thought the One S was just a redesign that played 4K video and that the "Xbox One Pro" was to come later.

Correct me if I'm wrong but im pretty sure the X1S upscales to 4K too

It does and it is marketed as just an upscaler, while Scorpio next year should be able to handle 4K natively. Will Scorpio also use 1440p and dynamic resolution tricks like PS4 Pro does, we will have to see.

Xbox One S is only designed for 4K Video and Blu-ray playback. It also does HDR gaming.

It upscales certain games to 4K, one of them being Gears 4.

Considering the GPU of the PS3 was ~0.25 Tflops and was still able to run 4K, I don't see why the Scorpio shouldn't be able to. Even phones can do it.

We are talking about running latest AAA games in 4K, not playing videos.

The PS3 could not output at 4K. Not even video. It maxed out at 1080p output, and most games rendered at 720p or below.
Further, there is a big difference between being technical able to render at a given resolution, and being able to render a detailed 3D environment at acceptable framerates.
There is a constant tradeoff of scene detail, resolution, and framerate. Even a dinky little Mali chip can game at 4K, 60FPS, as long as the games you're playing are no more graphically complex than Tetris. The Wii U (horsepower-wise closer to the Xb360/PS3 than the current generation) has games like MK8 running at 60FPS, but at 720p, with relatively simple shading. On the last generation consoles, Call of Duty had limited draw distances and lower polycounts than Battlefield, in order to achieve a stable 60FPS at the same resolution.

People phrase shit in such a way that it genuinely seems like they're under the impression that the consoles actually can't run stuff in 4K60 or whatever.
They'll be able to run the latest triple A games in 4K - as long as the dev sets that as a target.

That is exactly correct, and also not a contradiction to my post.
The Okami PS3 port ran in 3840 x 2160, and was downscaled to 1080p for SSAA.
i like how they didnt mention at all during the stream that if you have a screen below 4k it wont give any framerate improvements. Only the fact that it will upgrade some ps4 games to 4k
Got me wondering if it's literally some tiny limitation (i.e. doesn't support the new HDMI or w/e) that they're forking $100 extra for a $5 upgrade.
Can't wait 'till it's taken apart and people figure out what you get for those $100.
