So japan.
What are you guys talking about, this is obviously the best design

It even comes mounted with the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon.
The mechs in Chromehounds look the most feasible to me. Or the BF2142 mechs.

look at that waist, unff
I'd like to order one RX-78 with air con, six disc CD/MP3 stereo, alcantara seats and three cupholders, please.
Goddammit Japan why must you make such cool things
fucking Japan
no matter how much you might creep everyone out, we can't help but love you guys
Will the mechs also be piloted by sexually frustrated 13 year old boys and girls? Might as well go all the way.
[editline]26th June 2012[/editline]
The real question isn't when will we be able to pilot mechs but rather when will we be able to have our mechs pilot mechs.

Wasnt Gundam the series that inspired Armored Core?
Still, its one hell of a breakthrough if the darned thing actually works atleast to the point it can atleast walk a good 25 or 35 miles.
I seriously think that Nations should focus on building atleast a MT-equivalent Bipedial Mech of some sort.

Armored Core is a little bit of both Mechwarrior and Gundam. MW because of the limited mobility of the mechs, restricted by physics but Gundam for the almost human-like appearance, supernatural speed and weaponry.

Really though, if anything we would have an Evangelion. It's easier to create a gigantic biological weapon humanoid/mech than build a towering, hulking titanium behemoth of a Gundam. Then there's the problem of feeding it...

Now all we need is Newtypes and we're all set

Something tells me that a bipedal tank would (at least with current technology) be difficult to do right. I'd imagine they'd have issues with balance and movement.

Well if they did something to the effect of the Muscle Tracer (MT) Technology from the Armored Core series (Literally tracing the movement of the user to move the legs), The movement issue would be atleast solved slightly, and for balance, we can just put stabilizers on to keep its balance centered.
Still its highly impractical unless you somehow build a mech that can move ludicriously fast (Im looking at you ACFA), since tanks can just hammer the legs to utter death with a few SABOT rounds.
No, we shut down the military they had and took away their right to declare war, but they were allowed to establish a small "Self Defense Force" a few years later.
Which really is a violation of Article 9 of their constitution, regardless of what their Supreme Court says, but I'm not really complaining because it's a ridiculous notion to deny a state the right to have any armed forces at all.
The future still has possibility.
For all we know, all the disadvantages will be erased at some point in the future, making them feasible and worth it.
The only possible way a robot suit of armor could be better than a tank of the same technological advancement would be if it was so much more mobile the tank couldn't get a hit off - and that sounds incredibly unlikely. Even if you had that down, you'd still be a massive walking target for planes and there's no way any walking robot could ever have enough agility to outmaneuver an aerial attack. So that's basically it - if they get really fast one day they could use their agility to mess up tanks but they'd be sitting ducks for planes. It doesn't seem like that'd be worth the cost to design and manufacture such an impractical technological wonder.
Start off small. Give us some Votomz.

What's next?
A real-life sized tentacle monster?
