Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo in Theaters 2014
the one thing about it though is that it's kind of a salvage mission at this point. the last two episodes were where he ran out of budget (which happened in a previous series he/the studio worked on where you ended up with what amounted to a slideshow presentation set to music, gotta dig that back up).
the [sp]instrumentality[/sp] was still intended through the last episodes just to give it some closure, but it was clearly rushed and ill thought out. Going back through stuff after watching 3.0 and with consideration for the [sp]repeated timeline[/sp] thing I mentioned, you see the episodes in a way different light
also if you need dumb 'wow that was obvious' for that, the rebuild stuff made it way more blatant than I'd have liked. The opening scenes of 1.0 show [sp]the remnants of the EoE fight with the mass produced evas, blood spatters, cross-shaped bodies sticking out of the water, giant eva outline on a hillside, etc. Furthermore, the sea is now red after third impact, whereas it was blue all through the original series. My question is where the hell is the geofront now though given it was completely opened up in EoE[/sp]. Some scenes match detail for detail but have these key things sticking out like a sore thumb and still some people never realize it
[sp]even really subtle things like shinji's walkman reaching track 27 in 2.0, while before that and in the show it specifically only looped between 25 and 26. after that, shinji had trouble with the walkman (in the kaji in the locker room scene). its definitely there to say to the viewer "shit is different, yo"[/sp]
Rebuild really is the superior way to view,
if you don't watch both NGE and the rebuild you are watching it wrong. im not an anime elitist or anything, you will just not understand certain things in the rebuild if you didn't watch NGE.
yeah and for the blinding fuck i dont know why reason the last 2 eps and eoe arent happening at the same time even though it would make sense
[sp]Shinji fully accepts instrumentality episode 26 and Shinji rejects and later accepts it in the second part of EoE. I think first part of the EoE movie was canonical.[/sp]
that dumb fan service pilot girl
continuing some of the things I'm talking about, [sp]she could be a conscious addition by shinji to replace asuka. Someone who is attractive/fanservicey, already knows all about him and is friendly so there's no need for first impressions or to fear being criticized for breathing at times. By all means an interjected 'Mary Sue' to see things different.[/sp]
HOWEVER
[sp]pushing the balance had its effect. He even prevented Kaji from piloting 03, though in doing so the only available pilot was asuka.
In this timeline, asuka isn't all that nasty of a human being that people remember her to be because she's forced into jealosy because shinji ignores her more, and also she was never mindblasted by a space angel. Nobody remembers that
but in redeeming herself from the side shinji pushed her away for, the whole eva 03 thing happened. Demigod shinji now learns the hard way that balance is extremely delicate. He feels deep regret for losing asuka, and eventually is super relieved she's safe when they meet again, though obviously she's kind of in sour grapes mode as a result of everything and nothing is fixed except we now have the pink wonder meowing to fire a sniper rifle[/sp]
Aw fuck yeah
I went to the first English dubbed screening at NYCC, it was amazing
I also get to be in the extras on the DVD which is badass
also, a lot of people hate the english dubs (like most animes) but i honestly can't stand looking up and down the screen to look at the visuals and the subtitles. i also dont have a problem with the acting.
the only issues i had was the added sound effects in the EoE dub like cartoony squish noises when guys get shot in the head, and according to the commentary they put it in "because it's funny"... in a really serious scene. i mean come on.
does anyone remember the preview for 4.0 at the end of 3.0?
I remember 3.0's at the end of 2.0.
Yeah, you can see how much of that actually got into 3.0. 4.0 is very likely going to contain none of the scenes from the trailer, but it doesn't matter because they'll just replace it with something even more batshit crazy!
Oh man, I live like 15-20 mins away from the greensboro theater. No matter what's been said about how good/bad 3.0 is, its still "Evangelion in my local movie theater!"
also, a lot of people hate the english dubs (like most animes) but i honestly can't stand looking up and down the screen to look at the visuals and the subtitles. i also dont have a problem with the acting.

I hate the english dubs because Spike Spencer (shinji's Eng VA) is a piece of trash and also screams like a muppet
Asuka's VA is a great person to talk to though

Oh man the Spike Spencer Q&A after the screening was terribly cringeworthy
He basically admitted to not knowing about anything that was going on in EVA at all
[editline]f[/editline]
I'm pretty sure he also admitted that it was his first time actually watching it as well

last I saw him, it was just after he delivered the opening ceremony at a convention, 10 or 11 in the morning. He was already so drunk that when I asked him if I could get a photo for press, he first tried to take a picture of me with his own camera, then he handed it to my friend and held my shoulder like I was getting my picture with him... for his camera... THEN I finally got him to stand and smile
Tiffany isn't too fond of him and tends to tell the tornado story as much as I do
I know a lot of fans complain that all the voices in Rebuild are changed but I gotta be honest rewatching Evangelion can be pretty hard since those voices are dated as heck
I welcome the changes with open arms
Hell, I woulda been okay with a different Shinji even
Asuka you can't touch though
I can't stand the dub at all

nigga sounds like kermit the frog
I think the reason I dislike Evangelion Rebuild is because when I watched the original series for the first time I was a depressed 16 year old who was convinced he was going to die alone and good god did the series hit me like a sack of bricks
when I watched rebuild I was unfortunately more emotionally stable at the time :/
[editline]3rd December 2013[/editline]
seriously though Evangelion hit me hard
it's probably why I defend it so I can understand any and all criticisims but in general when a piece of fiction or media can make an emotional connection that's a pretty good thing
and when said media has fuckin' radical angel robots that's even better
I cried at the end of evangelion I don't even care
my condolences to parents who blindly take their kids to the movie thinking it's a random cartoon
also the movie's turn of events was wacky and leaves so much to explain that I hope 4.0 can recover. I tell everyone they have to wait for 4 to come out before watching 3.
the rebuild series is only giving momentum to my old theory that actually makes the 'throwaway' last episodes of the series kind of awesome, is that everything at that point is [sp]shinji's experience as the tree of life/"god", retconning the events and literally rebuilding the timeline to try and alter the previous outcome.
There's even a fan-made comic (doujin but also available in SFW form), 'Retake' (in order of 1, 2, 3, 0, 4, and more I think), which I would consider a canon arc of the series. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the inspiration for the concepts occurring in rebuild, it's exactly the same concept but Shinji is fully aware of the reversal and makes intentional decisions instead of letting history kind of domino in different directions on its own. Good read[/sp]
as for movie spoilers, [sp]gay piano[/sp] is the weirdest thing and I can only assume it was an implied analogy. The [sp]post-timeskip[/sp] stuff is confusing as hell and doesn't make a lick of sense but to be fair that's about as much as shinji can make of it
yeah imo the rebuilds will be redeemed if they turn out [sp]to be a sequel rather than a remake, i.e. a rebuilt world from instrumentality in EoE. if that's the case, all the out-of-character crap they pulled with rei and asuka and company will be forgivable and even interesting. i might even be able to forgive the totally superfluous addition of mari.[/sp]
i don't really get why people like RETAKE though. the idea of shinji rebuilding the world following instrumentality is great, but the actual content is just terrible. the author seems to have read the entire series as a love story between shinji and asuka which is missing the point hardcore. not to mention the fucking awful handling of rei and kaworu. oh and shinji and asuka get married and have a kid at the age of 14 lololol. it's an interesting concept used to communicate cliche fanfiction.
Yeah if you're into horrible quality anime, NGE is great!
Rebuild really is the superior way to view, I'm not saying don't watch NGE but don't discount Rebuild, the only failure i've seen from it is that dumb fan service pilot girl
[editline]3rd December 2013[/editline]
It's like Gurren Lagann
watch the original series cause you know that's the original shit
but if you want the best content, the movies are the way to go. Way less filler bullshit and way more of the important shit
no, god no. not at all. admittedly rebuild trims some of the fat, but it also loses so much character development it's just painful. if you've watched the series before you just fill in the blanks yourself without even noticing, but if you haven't, you miss out on misato's backstory and her daddy issues, ritsuko's backstory and her mommy issues, asuka's entire character, rei's gradual development, etc etc.
not to mention End of Evangelion is just probably the best animated movie ever made and by not watching the series you miss out on that.
yo what, no chicago showings wtf

Dubbed Gendo from the original series sounds like he burns down orphanages in-between each line he delivers whereas the rebuild one suits his character much, much more, so if there is one good thing to mention regarding the rebuild dub, it is that the voices suit the characters a lot more this time. Also Misato's voice from the first episodes have left a permanent scar in my ears due to her delivery of her lines in the first two episodes, but in the Rebuilds she has pulled off the voicing perfectly.
I don't really care if it's bad since I really love anything NGE related. I would really love to see this on the big screen regardless if it's good or not.
Does someone have a city list for Canada? I can't find it anywhere.
Does someone have a city list for Canada? I can't find it anywhere.
There was a toronto showing like, last month, but yeah, this would be cool
I don't really care if it's bad since I really love anything NGE related. I would really love to see this on the big screen regardless if it's good or not.
Even if it's not a good movie I can not wait to see what it changes and what happens with the characters, that is good enough for me as long as it makes 4.0 worth it.
yeah imo the rebuilds will be redeemed if they turn out [sp]to be a sequel rather than a remake[/sp]
read the last paragraph of my second post here
yo what, no chicago showings wtf
yeah someone noted in the article's comments that there's 3 in Hawaii but not one anywhere near Illinois
why am I reminded of indoctrination theory with how people handle 3.0
Even if you're all right it completely lacks all of the artistic brilliance that made EoE so amazing and the involving well told plot of the series. All you've done is lend some possible sense of logic to a boring plodding confusing backwards ugly mess.
Also, beastu modu
every time i remember the rebuilds exist it makes me wish that they were a series rather than films
i feel like part of the reason 3.0 was mediocre was because it introduced a bunch of new elements and plot points but then didn't elaborate on them at all, cus i think some of it had potential to be decent. apart from the curse of eva, that's the dumbest thing ever
why am I reminded of indoctrination theory with how people handle 3.0
because the writer is a better writer than all of bioware's ME3 team?
my only worry
well the other worry is being canadian I don't see any showings
but that going to a theatre with a bunch of evangelion fans
would be a lot of screaming when Kaworou shows up
it'd be unpleseant
Luckily it's the kind of thing you go alone to

It probably doesn't refer to this at all but it almost seems like a criticism of those anime with thousand year old characters who look 12 and are sexualized or something.
actually the montage of emails and letters was a mixture of "eva has changed my life thank you so much" and death threats. one of the shots is just literally "Rapist Shinji" or something along those lines, which was just some graffiti anno once saw that struck him as something really funny. Anno didn't use footage of cosplayers, that was a part of the live action sequence that didn't make it into the final cut of the movie. the live action sequence was a world without shinji, which ends with "no, this isn't right".
Cool, I didn't know that
the point was, shinji is struggling with shit a lot of people deal with; is life worth all of the pain, hate and anger? the show/movie both say yes, because there are also tons of pleasantries. this was the point of the email montage.
the empty movie theater comes after the sequence of everyone turning into LCL. its just to show a world (your world) without people. its really not much deeper than that.
It may be partly that, but I will firmly stand by my belief that it was (also) the film going "okay we realize a few of you might just be a little fed up with this by now"
I think the reason I dislike Evangelion Rebuild is because when I watched the original series for the first time I was a depressed 16 year old who was convinced he was going to die alone and good god did the series hit me like a sack of bricks

It's the reverse with me. I mean, I've always been emotionally unstable, especially by the time I watched the original show, but I was much worse off when I watched 2.0.
yeah imo the rebuilds will be redeemed if they turn out [sp]to be a sequel rather than a remake[/sp]
if anyone can't tell that by this point then they're denser than a black hole
the piano duet was the best part
the biggest tragedy of our time is that the video "Shinji plays a duet" was taken off of the internet
So bummed I missed out on 2.0 in theatres here :(
The thing that annoyed me the most about 3.0 was that so much of the movie could have been avoided if someone took 10 minutes to explain to Shinji what happened while he was asleep. :C
if anyone can't tell that by this point then they're denser than a black holet
well yeah, i'm definitely inclined to the sequel theory. but there's explanations for most of the sequel-supporting details that one could point out. for example the red sea is explained in 2.0 as a result of the second impact and the blood streak on the moon could have something to do with eva-06 being built up there. kaworu's weird lines could just be kaworu being kaworu, honestly he generally defies logic.
but other details, like shinji listening to track 27 on his tape player thing, still have me convinced it's a sequel. i just don't like to make definite statements until we have more concrete proof.
